Since the international language IS English I disagree with you.
As i said elsewhere, english just happens to be one of the most spoken languages in the world. That doesn't mean everyone should speak english only or should be seen as something less than a human for speaking another language. (i posted it in a thread where someone was being racist, you can skip this part here) That's why i'm saying that "international" doesn't mean "english" but "multilingual"
No one can be forced to speak english in game of course but heck I know you agree with me for the name and guild character thing because thats the part were it realllllllly gets annoying

That's a little long. The character limit for names is quite short... 10+ characters, actually. It's unconfirmed how long it is now - just "longer" than last time.

I plan on making up some nice RP names anyways, no rubbishy "IpkU63548" for me =P
I don't like long character limits anyways, 10 would be a fine limit imo. When it gets longer than that you end up with horrible names like "Gethalatariux" and stuff which is just terrible to type or even say.

That was aimed at the "10+ characters actually" part, and yes of course it's not confirmed, I'm just speculating.

Anyhow I do read posts. And if you mean about your name I find it fine tbh. =3

I'm just being oversensitive about all this "international=english, ban other languages" part that pops up now and then in various forums, as it affects me. English is my 3rd language and sometimes i just want to relax and speak in my mother language - or any other i know.

And there are many people who don't bother reading other's posts ;)

People, stop being whiny. You can click a name in chat to autocomplete it, or locate names in one of the obscure panels.
(I don't remember where, been ages... I know one was accessible by right clicking the player, another showed people in range similar to how bots in rohan/l2 can)

I absolutely hate people that speak foreign, and non-english names are mildly annoying..
.. but getting a decent name in mmos can be frustrating and I for one think using stars/symbols/other languages etc are fine. Heck, you might actually learn some russian/japanese or whatever.

Some players put symbols in their name because the name they wanted was already taken ;^; What I'd like to see is being able to choose any name you want even if it is already taken and player accounts would identified by ID# instead of player name.

Ok, simply put.

Pros of allowing all the possible characters:
- Maximizes name originality
- Allows alternatives if your preferred name is taken

Cons of allowing all the possible characters:
- Reduces ability to PM (if you really want a PM block, just filter out all PMs.)
- Reduces enforceability of the rules (because it's harder to report the player)
- Creates an eyesore if you do not have support for East Asian languages enabled (so many boxes...)
- Changes all the fonts to something harder to read (on my machine) if you bite the bullet and install the added support (which for an international-supported english server is an eyebrow raiser...PWI will be as laggy for them as MY-PW is for us...)

So in short, my verdict is to balance the two somewhat. Anything you can see on a standard American (the host country) keybaord should be allowed for character names, and the 'special' Alt-accessible characters for guild names. So: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and the most common punctuation marks with the possible exception of exclamation marks, periods, question marks, and commas which are intended for grammar more than naming.

Questions, comments, and concerns, please reply and we can have an intelligent conversation about it...this summary and my personal opinion are just that. A quick summary of my take on what has been posted so far.

That's a shame. Linux style character names was one of the few things that set MY-EN apart from most mmos, and allowed people to get the name they want much more easily.

I never once saw or heard about this feature being used maliciously, it just wasn't done since everyone knew about the naming system from the outset.

If this isn't carved in stone, please think about it more. It's SO HARD to get the name you want in most games, and that's the most fundamental element of a character.

Its not hard to get the names you want, unless the names you want exist....

I played MMO's for the past 2 years, and I made up my own character names *over 20 unique cool names* And no one copied or used them :P

Well umm... duh? That's the whole point, with only one possible CaSe for each name they get taken a whole lot faster. The worst part is so many good names get taken for characters that aren't even played. People try it for 5 minutes and quit, their name stays taken indefinitely as most won't bother to hit delete before they go. Some people go out of their way to "reserve" dozens of names they "might want later." I know people that do this -.-

Not everyone wants something weird and unique in the sense you mean.

CaSe sensitive names are just far superior.

We should maintain a common standard.
most widely accecpted standard is

> [A - Z] = $
> [a - z] = *
> [0 - 9] = #

where the name is formed by COLOR="Cyan"]$ + * or #[/COLOR
eg.
Severan = accecpted
severan = not accecpted (1st letter should be caps and alphabet)
SeveRan = not accecpted (only 1st letter can be caps)
S3v3ran = accecpted
Severan123 = accecpted etc.

reason for this is to avoid duplicate names

imagine i have a Wizard named Akira someone comes up with a /\kira i'd be jealous and this can also result in impersonation of people.
but Akira and Akira278 dont bother me, because everyone would know who the original Akira is

and please no _ and blankspace in names pls...

Oh please no.
One of the reasons many people left PW-MY was because they allowed these symbols in their names.

Hard to pm them, hard to report them, hard to tell others who the name was.
Why do we have to complicate everything T_T

Ugh 8 pages...
Why do you care what other ppl do? Do you roll around at night in bed sleepless because somone wore their t-shirt the wrong way round today? or because someone had a watch on their right hand?
Everyone is different and I think the stars in the char names are cute.

I recall we had a guy in our guild once who just had a single symbol has his char name, and he was just a regular fun guy that didint do it to abuse the system or anything like that.

#1 hard to report them - untrue
Rightclick on the char/nick in chat log and choose "duplicate name" from the popup

#2 hard to pm
Why do you want to PM somone you don't know?
Duplicate name from the chatlog if its worldchat related.

International = multilingual, not english. ;)

I'd say let names have only a-z, A-Z (and maybe spaces) but allow unicode chat so everyone can speak the language s/he wants.

International = anyone is allowed to login, no matter what their native tongue.
Therefore I'd have no problem with unicode CHAT, but we are talking about character naming conventions here. Simply put, my opinion on this subject is unchanged...reserve Alt-codes for guild names and potentially for chat. Character names should be kept simple...and while reporting is as easy (sometimes) as opening a menu and clicking 'report', sometimes you do not have that option. Someone exploiting glitches to KoS you, for instance, and having a name that has characters you cannot type makes it hard to get a GM to look in on the PKer to see if they are just (really) good at PKing or if they are exploiting glitches and bugs that are potentially illegal to use....point made?

Yes this is an international community, but as such we must all use the same language, otherwise it will become a mess.

Indeed! And using languages that are not known by the majority of the playerbase just excludes people from conversations, creating (yet another) division in the playerbase. If you want to page in Swahili or in Turkish, that's fine, but for world chat, normal chat, party chat, and (depending on the guild) guild chat, English should be the de facto standard.

If the global international language is english then what language is supposed to be spoken in the international version of a game? I don't really mind people speaking in their own language though, nothing wrong with that

Its just that I don't like seeing different fonts in game like accented italian e' and the french c with a 5 at the bottom.

True you can copy and paste their name in game but it just makes it more complicated and messy.
At least just for the names would be good disabling it.

Confusion will also occur if there will be people with similar names for e.g.

Rokyu and Rokyu* . People will just assume it was Rokyu without a star so you can fake being another person and getting them banned. Happened to Lelouchi in perfect world until the gms realized it wasn't him, and because he wouldn't have got banned anyway because he's malaysian
