It is always exciting coming up to a new MMO release, and this is no exception! Only 5 days away from the first BETA, I would imagine Cryptic to be in "CRUNCH" mode, to take the client from Alpha to Closed BETA, to ensure that on the day, there are no crashes of servers, no lag, no ques, and that everyone will be able to download and update the client in a timely and smooth fashion before they flick the switch on the servers and let people in.
Very exciting times!
You can imagine, these DEVS have not the time to comment on forums, as they are working 7 days a week, and bug squashing, optimizing, adding last minute content and smoothing out the rough edges, so they are sleeping under their desks, easting pizza and drinking Dr. Pepper (I guess, I am Australian, but isn't that what Americans drink?).
I appreciate and respect this, to ensure that we have an exciting, addictive experience from second 1 to ensure our long lasting dedication to the game.
Bravo Cryptic - Do it right - you have a winner on your hands!!

Got a friend who works for a MMO in the QA department and he works 14+ hour days 7 days a week for the last few weeks leading up to an expansion release. He is in my table top group and we just cancel gaming day for the 3 weeks before a release.

The game is already in beta. It is not in alpha. Should check other threads, it's been in beta for a while now.
Actually, No- the beta hasn't started yet! It'll start soon though!
And yes- it's been crazy- LOTS of long hours and people staying late into the night (and sometimes overnight!) working on the finishing touches.
This will be said, so I'll just get it out there:
After the weekends, are there any plans already as to who will get access to the real beta and when?
I am just curious - I'll get to play for 3 weekends, if I have to wait until open beta after that I won't mind - will have many, many screenies to watch and enjoy during the wait xD
*distant barking*
Yeah, Wuffy, you'll get to eat orks in a couple of days! *patting wolf* save your energy
Presuming there is no unforeseen issues, they will probably launch 2-4 weeks after the last closed beta weekend. Given companies preference to Friday night launches, Founders will probably gain access Monday and Guardians would gain access Wednesday with a Friday afternoon launch.
Mind you this is just from personal experience.

The testing schedule is still subject to change based on issues that do or do not arise during the Closed Beta Weekends.

Case and point, Mel should have left just about four hours ago! Poor Mel :-(
So who has their own countdowns running? I know some of you must has started something like a Neverwinter Advent Calendar

...What aren't players (and mods) allowed to be prepping too?
Im prepping, I have my 101 excuses to tell the boss I'm not coming in to work on standby. Packed overnight bags for the wife and kids (hidden under the bed) for a "surprise visit" to the in-laws (I'll be just dropping them off at the door, if I'm not late I may even slow down for them to get out rather than a high speed turn with the van door open).

You have 5 days to build a catapult, has a few benefits you will :
Save on gas, this counters any complaints of rough landings, ask them to think of the trees.
You do not run the risk of being dragged in for coffee, which turns out to be a cover up for, could you paint the shed please?
You will have your own catapult in the future, never again shall visitors stay to long, which again gives more neverwinter time
Your own catapult, says it all.

What I think I need to do first is organize the energy equation I need to use.
KE(spring) = PE(gravity of the object) + PE(gravity of the arm) + KE(rotational)
so,
(1/2)*k*s = m*g*y + M*g*Y + (1/2)Iw^2
k=spring constant,
s=the stretch of the spring,
m=mass of the object,
M=mass of the arm,
y=the distance the object is from the ground,
Y=the distance the center of mass of the arm is from the ground (in this case it would be halfway),
I= the moment of inertia of both the object added to the moment of inertia of the arm(mR^2 + (M*L^2)/3) where L= the length of the arm and R=the radius of the circle it's moving in, both ar 2, and
w= the angular velocity of the arm at the end of its throw.
Once I calculate the value of w use kinematics to solve the rest, keeping in mind that the wife and children are flying in a trajectory 20 degrees from the horizontal.
