this is the most logical reason, except for the mysterious items with the "use/equip" text. a stack of top level treasure would be worth quite a bit and could be sold on the auction house for an appropriate price.

It's a pain. I went for tailoring and leadership. Tailoring can give you very minor stat increases but getting there will take ages and is likely to use up at least some money.
