It didn't make them more useful in my opinion. It basically created a need to use them, which I feel took away from the game.

4th ed to me seems like a more in-depth warhammer. I personally enjoyed 2nd the most due to the freedom of action. If you could imagine it in a way that made sense and your DM liked it, hey, go for it. You aren't restricted by a need of miniatures on a grid. That said, 4th ed was still a good system. I also enjoy this game…
