I will now have to go see this Reddit that I am Captain of, I actually read that on the PC forums, and after not getting the chests last night a couple times, we tried this and it worked. But I don't disagree with the rest of what you have written.

To fix this bug don't kill the final boss completely, bring him down under 5%, and let the hands drop him off the edge and kill him, if it doesn't kill him chip a little bit more off his health and the next round should get him, it seems to be the only way to safely make sure you get the chests and portal to drop.
