Invisible walls around the NPC is exactly what I used. Just have the trigger to make them disappear be the death of that group of enemies, and all is well!

I ran through on my 45 guard. I only ended up using one potion with my cleric companion in tow. So it ~could~ easily be cranked up a bit, but I wouldn't add to any of the fights with multiple assassins in them.
