If you want to play using a gamepad, there's nothing stopping you from doing so right now. I use a gamepad, and yes, that's for the PC version.

One thing you'll need is software to translate gamepad button presses into keyboard key presses. But that's pretty standard if you want to use a gamepad to play PC games. There are some games that nominally claim to support gamepads, but I've never yet seen one with gamepad support that worked right out of the box, the way keyboards and mice almost invariably do.

The other problem is moving the camera, as gamepads tend not to have mice on them, and Cryptic didn't see fit to assign a button such that holding it rotates the camera (or equivalently, rotates you) as they did with Champions Online. But they did provide a workaround of sorts via console commands:

    http://neverwinter.gamepedia.com/Console_command

    If you type:

    /adjustcamyaw x

where x is some number, it rotates you to the right by x degrees. Negative values of x rotate you left. For vertical rotations, you need /adjustcampitch You can assign console commands to buttons, so I have combinations of buttons to press to rotate left 60 degrees, left 10, right 10, right 60, up 10, or down 10. Press a button repeatedly to rotate further.

It takes a while to get used to tapping buttons to rotate, but it works all right once you get the hang of it. As is typical with gamepads, they make dodging easier and aiming harder here. Fortunately, this is a game where dodging matters quite a bit, and aiming is pretty forgiving, as if you're kind of close to pointing at something, it will adjust the camera for you to point right at it.

The other problem is that Cryptic's in-game methods for setting your controls are buggy, so you'll probably have to edit the file. You can use:

    /bind_save_file (filename)

to save your current commands to a file with the specified name, then go edit the file in Notepad or whatever plain text editor you prefer. The precise location of the file depends on where you installed the game. I think that the default is:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment\Neverwinter_en\Neverwinter\Live

or probably something a little different if not in English. You may have to do some stuff to work around Windows not liking you to edit files in the Program Files folder directly. I had to copy the file elsewhere, make the desired edits, and then copy it back. Once that's done, you can use

    /bind_load_file (filename)

to load the file back with your new settings. It will probably take some experimentation to get the syntax right, so it took me about 40 minutes to get everything right when I started the game. But once it's set, you can use /bind_load_file to load the same settings on other characters and keep it forever.

Yeah, it's a pain to set up. But it does work. And at least it's a lot simpler than using a gamepad in TERA, which requires you to find and download third party software to tell the game that there is an Xbox 360 controller plugged in, as that game artificially disables key gamepad settings if it doesn't find an Xbox 360 controller. No, I'm not making that up.

Thank you for the in depth reply. Sorry for the delay in replying. I personally prefer keyboard & mouse to play. But was looking into gamepad as an option for my nephew.

I use a PS2 controller with Xpadder myself. I find that it's bad for area targeting (Eg spell mastery Icy Terrain) but it's pretty decent for everything else. There's not enough buttons for everything, so sometimes I have to switch to using the keyboard, particularly for dialogue options .

OMG, dude. You really made life so hard for yourself. All you need is Pinnacle Game Profiler or Xpadder. PGP is like $5 for a lifetime. It allows you map combinations of keys, maps axis to camera control, and a bunch of options. I use a PS3 controller and the camera rotates fine without doing all that stuff you did. The only drawback is the mouse control isn't as smooth as a real mouse, but that's the obvious I would think. So for inventory and professions I use my mouse. Other than that, the controller works great.
