Let me start off by saying I hate buffing my party members. I am a selfish person. :P
When I first rolled a GF, I was under the impression that they could do damage (Envy and Rokuthy's guides). However, the community hated that, so I re-specced to be a buff bot. That gameplay is just too boring (and pointless).
I want an option to do both dps and buff, thank you
though said dps is not impressive I still carry my weight.

Between those two, assuming after the traditional damage mitigation.... DPS because that would make for a less frustrating experience when having to solo
Sounds like tank should be your third option - and following how they have been respeccing classes lately - i wouldnt be surprised to see that as your 3 options. A DPS path, a Buff path and a Tank path. Or even better, a DragonAge sword/shield paragon style and a Tank paragon style. I dunno. I hate my GF so .. I can only hope they make the class more fun to play.

It doesn't seem to be an option, yet at the least i would simply like my GF to work properly - i.e. fix the 55+ bugs.
So, according to this poll, most people who picked to play THE tank class just want to DPS.. But that's not all, this is incomplete, what they really want to is to DPS while enjoying high defenses and high HP. In a normal game Id say forget it, but here I cant really say that. Here the classes are all messed up ( looking at you HR tank ).
Conclusion - same as before, gotta find a new game, this one's heading for the scrapheap

Block when I tell it to block and stop letting random **** through guard. About tired of that White Dragon freezing me through guard every other time I block it.

I went ahead and added "Tank" and "Other opinion" as options.

That is sort of the direction I thought the origonal poll was taking. 'What would make the GF more useful as a tank. Yeah I can tank with my HR too. I learned aggro management on my GF but once HR had the DPS and survivabilty to hold aggro and take that role it was viable to do so. So what can GF add to make it more usefull as a tank than something else? ITF is already a prety awesome buff. Dt and KC are also pretty good buffs. I think that what would be more useful for a tank at this state in the game would be contributing more to killing the mobs. I don't think it should be competitive with a pure DPS class because it can do things they can't. I'm pretty sure that with some more DPS and the same bufff things would even out though.

+marks, tide of iron and a lot of dmg reduction if party needs.
There's no need for tanks or healers in the current game, so it 100% should be dps with a little buffing thrown in. If the game ever does a 180 and requires tanks then tanking would be appropriate but it just doesn't at the moment so they need more dps.
Want balanced DPS and TANK, how? easy - Shift/Tab powers, like HR.
Tank stance - sword and shield. Tanky and buff abilities.
Dps stance - double swords. Dps and debuff abilities.
This, and only this i want from GF.

That actually sounds really neat. But that would require a lot of work on cryptics part but still a great idea if it could be implemented.

Dps class should give dmg.
Healer should heal.
Buffer should buff.
Tank should tank.
Now everything is mixed up.
Honestly I don't care. I wish to be needed in party. Make tank usefull, no matter of role in party.
I play a GF as my main, I honestly love it! Excellent damage mitigation, great buffs & super fun to play. I would say SOME damage output increase could be useful to keep up with the other classes. I don't think going as far as what a GWF can put out is necessary, but a bit more is required. I know my role is to hold aggro, stay alive and buff all of which I do well BUT when it comes time to solo, the mobs go down hella slow. Otherwise, love the class and will always be a melee player at heart. I AM concerned with the corner the new Paladin class is pushing GF into though. I am very interested to see how they keep GF relevant and useful. I do not want my toon replaced in the party by another class.
Well its basically a swordsman carrying a shield right? So front row of battle. So medium to high DPS and also ability to take damage for the party and out of the party's way by having increased threat. That's what a fighter would do in the D&D I'm used to. Don't know if that's different to "Guardian" Fighter(I'm assembling materials to read and educate myself).
As for if people choose a class or race or whatever and expect to be something else...well it is D&D right? People can't know Cryptic's model in MMO creation and probably don't come with an obtained knowledge of what is what. Maybe they don't even spend too much time gaming and only want to relax a little in their spare time. And additionally, many could be actual roleplayers prior to the games creation; and in roleplaying, one could potentially create under the proper circumstances and setting, a drow that fights for good causes, a paladin that turns to be a tyrant and evil worshiper, a fighter that really wants to and becomes a mage or anything else their imagination can create. That's why D&D is popular in the first place.
Maybe Cryptic should add detailed descriptions when you select classes or something, like "Gameplay Warning: if you choose this class, when in group play like dungeons and/or skirmish fights, or should you choose to PVP, people will expect you to do this and this, so choose wisely according to your desired play-style". That might end the possible misunderstandings. Or I don't know.
oh yes and just to Add, While the level cap dont raise to 70 damage is FAR more rewarding than "tanking".
I have a 19k GS Conqueror Swordmaster and i am yet to see ANY protector beat me in pvp.
If you are sacrificing your whole solo experience the least you should wait is to beat the ones focused in DPS right? Not in neverwinter, no Protector could EVER beat me in pvp. Sure, they can be boring and defend for a long time, the tacticians can make me prone for a while, but i will rise and i will kill then in seconds lol.
I have been doing some dungeon runs with a 22k gs protector and its funny that i usually do FIVE times more damage than him. while he doenst take even double the damage i take.
I hope that with the level cap raise the damage will be severely nerfed overall and we can gain something else to do in neverwinter other than do damage.
I agree.
The buff Protectors fare even worse and are usually sitting ducks if they lose their support. Often times they only have Bull Charge or Griffon's to protect themselves, so I just swarm them. As you said, it can be a long fight, but I am never in danger of losing.

Luckily, with enemies hitting harder and harder, GF as tanks are becoming more necessary.

This game is not wow. Why do people think every mmo has the same class structure....

This is exactly it. Personally I feel like GF's are still trying to be rammed into a trinity role in a non-trinity game.
