My understanding it is "suppose" to increase your chances of getting better rewards/loot from encounters, however it doesn't seem to do this by any noticeable amount as others have mentioned.
From what I know getting Great Success is based being able to do a certain amount of damage, take a certain amount of damage or do a certain amount of healing during the fight, although I think other factors like reviving people also come into it. Therefore what you should try and go for will depend on your class/role, for example if you are a tank type you will want to take as much damage as possible without dying ideally; which btw is why I laugh at things like GFs dancing around dragons trying to dodge it's attacks.
The thing is if there are a lot of people there then unless they start scaling encounter boss HP to the number of people fighting it then the fights end up being too short so you won't get enough time fighting to meet the requirements and then it favours the overgeared types
Yep if it still follows the same rules as module 3 great success is supposed to glive you a slightly better chance at the good loot than if you get encounter complete.

Believe it or not, but this actually can happen. Just yesterday happened to me and a fellow guildie.

Really? Belts and necks are pretty much raining from the sky from these Heroics, and people are still complaining?
Great Success means that you're rolling on the highest possible loot table for HE rewards, with a higher chance to get an "epic" rewards. Otherwise you have a lower chance of an epic reward from a regular success. There's also a minor success that's not noted, for pretty much just showing up near an event.
Next time you do the dragons, check out the coins you get. 15 is the best result, 10 is moderate, and 5 is low. These coincide with your level of success.
The formula for what that actually means is shrouded in mystery, but you score "points" for dealing damage, taking damage and healing. If you cross certain thresholds, you move up to the next reward tier.
I don't believe it's competitive, but a flat amount. I was doing dragons last night in a group of guildies, and if we killed a dragon by ourselves, all five of us ended up with a Great Success result, versus 30-40 man zergs where no one ends up getting a Great Success.

This...is exactly why it's annoying when you are doing the Dragon HEs, manage to find yourself a moderately quiet instance and then some annoying person goes and advertises the instance and timer and you end up with a flood of people there in seconds, therefore drastically reducing most people's chance to get Great Success :<

Perhaps a slightly selfish viewpoint. Everyone has a equal right to be there.
That is opinion, not fact, or frustration talking. You do get a better chance with Great Success, but the chance is still low. The items you are seeking are considered "very rare," so you should expect to have to get Great Success at least 100 times before getting the item.
On a side note, the very rare gear drop rate has increased quite a bit from IWD (which was ridiculously low at the time).
Totally agree. I would not put much emphasis on Great Success. I admit, it's hard to do and I found myself getting concerned about it, so I started dragonzerg from the opposite direction on a low-population instance just to see if I could accomplish it. Thankfully, the instance wasn't flooded immediately and only a few people started on a dragon, so I did achieve Great Success but that's the first time in a long time that's happened. Even managed to get a second belt from it, but my first was from Heroic Success.
Bottom line: it doesn't matter as much as people think it does and farming the dragonzerg in the standard way painfully reduces the chances of getting Great Success.
Doesn't really matter anyways , just buy a belt while they are reasonably cheap if you really want the 3 piece set then get the cloak when the Tiamat HE opens up , you would have to be crazy to buy one for 2 million or whatever the imperial and black ice cloaks are going for atm , as long as you are running with fairly competent players you should have no problems getting enough Linu's favors pretty quickly to get a cloak and your offhand.
The whole top damage/stuff thing is poorly executed and should not be used as a metric for loot distribution.
If I'm a damage-oriented class/spec, I naturally come on top. If i'm a debuff-oriented class/spec, I'll just improve other people's chance at loot, and get none ever.
The loot should be evenly distributed among whoever had a non-trivial contribution. The whole race to max damage means that only the people who get the best equipment will be able to roll for the best equipment (that they already have, i.e. someone with a full artifact item set will have better chances at getting artifact item to sell, and people who can't get it will have even less chances at getting it)...
Really? Belts and necks are pretty much raining from the sky from these Heroics, and people are still complaining?
Feel free to start giving away all these "belts" and "necks" that have been dropping from the sky. I've done well over 200, the vast majority a great success and I have yet to see 1 such item drop. I'm not complaining, I'm just not bothering to do them anymore. I already have 2 stacks of coffers, don't need any more of them or blue junk.

They're so common and cheap that I don't even bother selling them.

That's going to depend a lot on personal view and in-game financial status. The only belts that I'd call cheap are Seldarine at about 80k as of several hours ago. I got my first ever belt drop last night, a Lathander's. I toyed with selling it as the ~250k would have been useful but decided it keep it as I didn't like my chances of getting another drop.
I still want two CON belts for GF and SW and a DEX for HR. Pricing are coming down slowly.

That's a very very exaggerated statement. The droprates are indeed higher than before but still a bit low (especially due to the RNG nature)

I sold an Int belt for 1 Mil, since I only have one character for whom it could be useful. I'll probably give one of my Dex belts to my GWF, or he might wear my Str belt (which was going for 650K when I got it). I still have a HR and a DC to equip, and as Charisma and Seldarine belt I haven't yet mentioned.
I have until 12/26 to decide. Anything I don't use, I'll put in my guild bank.
As a GF player is really hard for me to get a great succes. Mi damage can`t never be higher than other pure dps classes and since the dragons get zerged and nuked in 30 second i cant tank them enogh time to get the score needed...

It is not that hard.
1. Enable KV.
2. Try to take damage, not to avoid it - e.g don't run from red zones, just hold your shield there, and use potions all the time.
For me it looks like damage taken gives you 3x score that damage you deal.
'Great Success' means nothing. Whenever I find myself in a sparsely populated WOD zone, I will switch to a nearly full zone as soon as I can.
You better your chances of getting a belt not by getting great success but by clearing as many HE as you can in that 15 mins. A full zone nets you 5 chances under 5 mins where you quickly switch zone and clear another 2-5, sometimes you get to switch a third zone and get an extra 1.
An extra few % of RNG of a pitiful chance at winning the lottery cannot beat the probability of multiple lottery tickets.

That is actually good thinking. Never thought about it that way.

Exactly my thinking and what I do. I almost always get at least 10-15 dragons per run. Hitting up 3 zones. You move to the higher populated to get the dragons down fast intially. You at the same time monitor which other zones have lower populations meaning they most likely will finish dragons slower. Or you wait till someone zones the empty channels. Last option is guessing if no one is zoneing.
I have gotten 2 arti belts (wisdom and con). After never seeing one in any other content including lockboxes. About 20 t1 epics which = RAD. Gotten my weekly done with ease and have 30+ dragon hoard coffers for this week already. You will also have runs of 15 with nothing but blue junk, RNG just at work.
I will also say this. I try not to be a HAMSTER when moving to other channels working on dragons. I try to go to the dragon next in the normal rotation. Instead of jumping on red and messing it up for the people who started at white. I understand why people do, in their quest for great success, but I find it kind of dickish.

I got Great Successes for just riding near a HE location in WoD.

It can. The threshold for Great Success is pretty low on smaller HE's. But I wouldn't count on just AFKing next to a dragon and hoping for loot.

The CHA belt is a pretty awesome choice for the SW. Mine has one and I love it! Just a thought . . .

WTF is KV? Esoteric short forms are fail
KV = Knight's Valor
Instead, grab a partner and just start smashing through HE. Loot, XP, and fun all come in much better quantities.
