I'm sure there are more than just me that pay a few dollars to play this game. Lots play for free but those of us that contribute would like the money to go for something useful like 99.999% up time for the server we play on. I'm not trying to be overly critical but because I like this game, and like many probably play too much, I would like the server to be there more often. With an understanding the complications and money required to make this possible, I'd like to suggest to Crytic in a very pleasant way that they should, like Netflix, Hulu an others, invest more time and money in the servers and developers that run the servers. Pay them more. Get more of them. Keep your customers happier and you will make more money.
There, I"ve spoke my mind. I'd like to hear what others think about this idea. Most of all, I'd like an explanation posted about why it takes 4 hours and why sometimes it takes even longer. I'm sure others are curious too.
WoW makes ungodly amounts of money from their players but they still have maintenance hours and even extended maintenance. It still happens regardless if you pay to play or not.
There have been some "emergency downtimes" (aka, the server crashed) in the life of Neverwinter. Other than that, the downtime is always posted in advance. Always. Thursday morning (US timezones), every week. Always has been this way (for all cryptic games, not just NW), always will be (most likely). "uptime" guarantees always exclude scheduled maintenance in every contracts I've ever seen (not that there is one for Neverwinter, of course), and I'd be willing to be they are north of 99% uptime.
They have no reason to explain why it's taking more than 4 hours. First off, though, PWE is doing something itself, so there is likely a component of that driving the longer downtime today. In any event, just don't ever expect to play on thursday at this time (whenever it is for you). Just expect to be doing something else -- it's ALWAYS this time EVERY Thursday. Do that, and you'll feel much calmer about all this.
So my thoughts: I have no problem with Cryptic's server uptime heretofor, and I've been playing their games for many years now.

99.999% is completely unrealistic ... you would only see something like that if the whole system was designed from the ground up with server availability as the primary goal. In other words, forget it.
For something like a game, 97% is good enough...99% would be great, but anything beayond that is just a waste of resources.
Ha!
Three nine's would only allow for .0875 HOURS of downtime in an ENTIRE YEAR.
Not gonna happen; totally unrealistic.

Closing as there is no way a Game Server would be able to be up all the time. Even those services mentioned are not up 99.999% of the time and I know, for I have been a member of them since they first came out.
