texture loading...or lack thereof

this has been going on for a while, before mod4

just thought i'd finally see if anyone else is experiencing this, or if something can be done about it

seems random, whenever i zone in somewhere, almost nothing has textures, just a bunch of white polygons, or different colored non-textured polygons

on top of this, not sure if it's related, but seems like it might be, whenever i try to drag abilities to my hot bar, i can't see what i'm dragging

the same goes for dragging items/enchants into and out of vaults, can't see what you're dragging

any ideas?

on windows 8.1

I experience this as well at times. I know others do too as there was an older thread on the issue that I remember.

I really hate when it happens when you are dragging an object and cannot see it. Have to watch for the 'discard' warning to avoid accidentally discarding something

This started happening to me a few weeks before Mod4. I didn't changed anything - same nvidia driver, same everything.

I also noticed that Neverwinter has a slight memory leak that could affect your PC if you have 6gb of RAM of less (don't know if it's related to the texture-loading issue, but thought I'd mention it).
    Where'd my blinky-blinky path go?

I have noticed that the texture loading issue happens in busy/loaded instances, PE, busy dragon fights etc.. I don't know if that's related.

I'm using a reasonable (6x.34GHz) i7, geforce 780, fastish (~400 MB/sec sequential read) SSD and controller combo, reasonable amounts of RAM etc.. Every other game performs so well as to be borderline obscene. However, in some cases, textures in the world take a long time to load, or heck, even icons of bag contents. It makes the game look rather poor and broken, and has cost Cryptic a couple of would-be whales who wanted to have a go on my system to see how the game was.

The textures should already be on your computer (note that when starting up there is a message of "Materials Loaded") and this is the logical and standard set-up for an MMO game client: textures files are on your local computer; large game download/patch updates for new zones.

Based on description I genuinely believe the issue you (OP) are experiencing is local; on your computer. There is likely some kind of file corruption going on there. If this were happening to me, here is how I'd trouble-shoot attempt to repair:

First: run chkdsk maintenance on my hard disk (newer versions of Windows: right-click Drive C: (or other drive is game if installed elsewhere). Choose Properties, Tools tab: Error Checking ("Check" button) - it will require a restart and the chkdsk utility will run before the desktop reappears.

If any errors are found and corrected, run it again and keep running it until no errors are found. Next, run the disk tools again and choose Optimize and defragment drive. If you have a really big disk, do it while you sleep or something.

If this still doesn't help, try the same with an aftermarket third-party utility like Norton if you have it.
Worst-case scenario: Uninstall, delete entire "Neverwinter" folder, EMPTY TRASH, reinstall (but that is a HUGE download: something like 15GB with all updates and patches and stuff.)

I hate to say it, but MS Windows has *always* slowly eaten itself alive and these kind of things happen. PROTIP: Run the chkdsk tool every month or so to keep ahead of this phenomenon.

this is installed on an SSD...tools you mentioned are meant for HDD

but anyways, i'd agree this would be a local problem, if it weren't for the existence of the occasional rubberbanding, solely in this MMO

i'd like to see if devs/mods have some kind of input

granted, it's not game-breaking, except when you join a dungeon/pvp match and can't see anything

This started happening for me as soon as mod3 came out. Most times it is when I first return to PE. Looks like there was a blizzard while I was away. It clears up as soon as I move.

I'm using an AMD Radion HD 6800 series something or other.

Ah yes, good point (SSD still rare enough I forgot to consider it). :)

I think I've experienced the problem only once, and it was fleeting, for lack of a better description, back when Mod 3 came out IIRC. It corrected itself, so I didn't think much more of it. I apologize my effort to help wasn't. :)

Honestly, chkdsk is probably not the OPs problem.
I have a 240gb SSD that I've installed Neverwinter to for a year now. I recently wiped it, reinstalled windows 7.1 and Neverwinter, and had absolutely no change with the texture-loading issue. Honestly, it's not a big deal, as they eventually get loaded.
Any yes, I too have noticed that it's more prevalent in PE and other high-activity areas.

Someone having this kind of problems?

    Options 1
    Options 2
    Options 3
    Game

I can play the game fine, but after DoD update when i play on my notebook i get this issues. All the screen its like, cant fit on the respective places. The menu bar its ok, but if u see the AP diamond or the skills, dont fit right in the screen.

I tried with all the graphic options, i dont know... you'll see that i play with extremely low graphic options, cause this notebook cant handle much more, but it worked fine before...

    I have absolutely same problem,
my system specs are - i7-4770K, Nvidia GTX 660 Ti, SSD
Looks like everyone that complains use SSD, maybe it is causing problem - e.g. area is loaded before all textures are loaded.
If I have time, I will move game to a HDD to see if there is any difference.

Au contraire. In PvP dom, it's a massive deal. If you can't see anything during the initial crazy fight for the mid point, you're likely to be dead weight, and a disadvantage to your team.

You would think so, wouldn't you? However, even the icons for the inventory and UI textures themselves don't load for some time, in a heavily loaded instance. It's embarrassing.

I was able to duplicate this but only by lagging my computer it's self out badly by launching ton of stuff in the background. I hope this helps.

not sure what his would have to do with anything, textures are already downloaded

unless the game is donwloading new textures every single time you load into the same place...which wouldn't surprise me

    Just found/remembered solution.
    Open Nvidia Control Panel.
    Select "Manage 3D settings"
    Select "Global Settings" tab
Look For "Power Management Mode" and change it from "Adaptive" to "Prefer maximum performance"

It is also possible to create custom game profile for "gameclient.exe", but it stops working after game update and cannot be deleted/fixed (or I don't know how to do it) so global settings will do the trick.

i always have that power managment setting on max preformance. I get the no loading textures all the time. Its probably nvidia drivers doing someting wonky.

    Intel i7 4770k cpu-4.2GHz.
    MSI Z87 GD-65 Motherboard.
    G.SKILL 16GB DDR3-2666MHz.
    Samsung 840EVO 500GB SSD
GIGABYTE GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition 1085MHz/1150MHz boost clock.

Same issue. GTX770 / SSD. I've tried the 'max 3d performance fix' without success. No legit reason things like icon textures should take so long to load on the high-end systems posted in this thread. I see mostly Nvidia users complaining, so think its driver related.

This really sucks at dragon fights where ground highlights turn into big angular blobs of primary colors.

Oh, sorry, yeah, for PVP it is a big deal. LOL

I've managed to test using older driver versions I have saved, but I noticed no difference regarding the texture-loading issue.

I'm starting to think that the game engine has some sort of prioritization formula that is not optimized - the engine will try to load players (and their associated armor textures) and building/structure textures simultaneously. I think that in every other MMO I've played, non-player textures always get loaded first. Just a theory, although honestly, our high-end gaming machines should be able to handle things better than this, despite which textures get priority.

To clarify, the version Charononus uses is found in the Device Manager, not the GForce Experience program. Also, 9.18.13.3233 looks like it's a few months old. My new version reads 9.18.13.3311

That is true. I could update to 340.52, but I choose not to because what I'm using is working well for every game I play atm and I go by if it's not broken don't fix it, when it comes to graphics drivers.

True. Even though everything your read about troubleshooting game issues immediately tells you to update your drivers. Mixed-signals much?

I'm unable to find the driver version you're using either in my downloads or online. :(

332.33 is the version from geforce experience.

After some further look up about my version, it was a special package version put together for ASUS RoG laptops it looks like, so you may not be able to get my version on another computer.
