Dear Developers,

I am requesting that you add access to this great out of game feature which still requires log in, that is the XMPP/JABBER access that you allow in Star Trek Online. ANY STAR TREK ONLINE player that has a gold status or lifetime subscription can access this feature from any Cryptic game including Neverwinter and Champions Online, however current players of those games can't use it. This feature allows me to view all guild chats from all games and custom channels while not in game that I am subscribed to. Please help make this feature available to all players and of all 3 Cryptic Games.

P.S. I do expect Cryptic to put the necessary security protections such as certain levels, etc to put in place to protect against spammers.

Excerpt Below:

"Hey gang!

As part of our ongoing testing of our new XMPP feature, we are now enabling Star Trek Online's Tribble users to make use of the feature! NOTE: You must be a Gold Member to be able to use this feature.

I've been using this for quite sometime now, and have been having a blast with it! Right now, this feature is only in beta, as such, it's possible that there could be frequent outages, or unplanned maintenance could be performed at any given time, so please bear with us, and pardon our dust, this feature is still in its BETA phase.

Below, you'll find the instructions for how to connect to our in-game chat server using Pidgin, which is the IM client we use here at Cryptic, however, this should also work using Trillian, or any other client which supports XMPP chat.

We will be keeping an eye on this thread to gather your feedback, and will be working with you to help ensure that the experience improves and is nice and stable for when we enable this functionality for all our users.

If you're not currently signed up for Tribble, and wish to check this feature out, you can sign up for Tribble here.

If you have any feedback, or questions about this feature, please leave it in this thread so that we can find it easily!

Thanks,

Stormshade

2. Click on Accounts > Manage Accounts.
3. Click the Add button.
4. On the Add Account dialog fill out the following:
1. Protocol: XMPP

3. Domain: CrypticSpace.com
4. Resource: <Anything> (Equivalent to character name in game)
5. Password: <Your Account Password>
5. Check Remember Password (if desired).
6. Click Add.

Known Issues

* Friends may not show as online until they change zones in game or relogin.
* In game Location in social panel displays as "Instant Messaging #0"
* Users can be on both XMPP and in game - Messages are sent to both.
* Cannot currently join more than 6 custom chat channels at a time.

FAQ

Q: Why can't I see my friends?
A: In Pidgin your offline friends do not show up by default. To make them show, choose Buddies -> Show -> Offline Buddies

Q: Why does my account name show up in chat instead of my handle name?
A: Some clients, such as Trillian, show your account name in your chat window, but other users will see your handle name."

This would make it a lot easier for a lot of us. And would likely help our guilds keep in touch easier as well.

This makes it sound like a subscription based service. No thank you if it is. I do like the idea of being able to chat with guildies and monitor the legit channel while I am outside of the game, however if I have to pay for it beyond a one time fee I will not do it.

This is not a subscription based service, it was however started when Star Trek Online was subscription based which is why I want them to make it available to all players now that we have a free to play model on all 3 games.

I'm not against such feature, but what's wrong with the voice chat we have?
It requires you to be in the game? The OP is talking about a feature that would enable you to access guild chat and channels while not actually in the game, for example at work.

Pidgin/Jabber Is not a voice chat it is an instant messenger. Out of game chat allows you to access your in game friendlist and guild chat lines when you are not in the game. You can also use Trillian, IM+, Xabber or any instant messenger that supports jabber XMPP connections. even on smart phones. (most the programs on I-phone can't access the guild chat, but I can ace my friend lists and send private messages).

It is kind of fun to freak out guild mates as you don't show up on the guild roster. Also sometimes when NW goes down for maintenance the chat stays up (unless all three game are down)

there Is instructions on how to set this up in the Neverwinter Gamepedia Wiki under "Chat" with Pictures and troubleshooting tips.

So far if you have gold/or lifetime in STO or Champs online you can access this feature on all 3 games.
But even HOTN Neverwinter players cannot access this feature (unless they have gold in another game).
If this has changed i'm sure various people who only play NW would love to know.
I now have lifetime on Champ so I cannot tell if things change.

one tip for people that have Email addresses as your login
since Pidgin wont accept the @ Sign you have to use the escape character (\40) to log in.
lets pretend your email is Bob123@Email.com
to login to pidgin you'd need to use Bob123\40Email.com a your user name.

This would be absolutely wonderful. Many times I can't have the game open, but still want to be able to chat with guildmates. I don't play STO or CO, only Neverwinter. I'm sure there are many people who log into the game only to chat, and if they were able to do so via XMPP/Jabber clients, they wouldn't need to be in the game world, which would mean they'd put a lower strain on the main game servers.

I sure hope they consider what I am asking for, would be nice.

I keep bringing this up from time to time. Currently it is only available to subscribers or lifetime members of STO and/or CO. For those who play Neverwinter exclusively, there needs to be a Zen unlock purchase to enable this. I really miss having this but am not going to re-sub to CO or STO just to be able to use this for Neverwinter.

I don't think it needs a Zen unlock, but add it as an unlock for reaching a level 60 character.

They could add it to the Hero of the North package to help make it actually worth the money it costs these days.

No don't! You do not want to put a paywall to a feature which would tighten an ingame community.
