To the Lore D&D Master: Is the companion Illusionist Red Wizard a Sorcerer of sorts?

Like my title suggest I have seen this companion fight and he uses no weapon for attacking or casting, it looks really cool! ...So...

Does this mean his a Sorcerer? (Since Magic courses through their bodies so it would make sense they don't need a weapon for focus just gear, Focus jewels, Tattoos)

Or...

Are Thay Red Wizards so talented in their magic schools they don't need weapons of focus or was it their tattoos?

What do you think? :o

PS: Either way would love for casters (Wizards, Clerics, Warlocks, etc...) to have an option to hide completely their weapon and cast like this, maybe when your using *clothing*? Or NEW weapons created by Magical Tattoos for every Class it could be just cosmetic, or for the clothing option too? Or are We getting a glimpse of how a Sorcerer fights?....Ooooo I get goose bumps just thinking about it! :3

Not all implements of magical nature have to be a physical object. Some can be tattoos or body markings for instance or even items sewn within the clothing. Other implements can just be the words or actions you use to cast the spell. A foci is not always something you carry in your hand, basically.

I'd imagine that his tattoos were his Focus for casting magic.

Red Wizards are extremely prejudiced against non-wizard arcane spellcasters. This remains true through 3e, 4e, and 5e. Sorcerers are seen as lazy, undisciplined mutants worthy only of dissection to figure out how they are able to cast spells without training, while warlocks are seen as cheaters who sold their souls for magic. To use a college analogy, the wizard studied hard to get that A, the sorcerer got the A without studying, and the warlock got the A by sleeping with the dean.

Also, in D&D 4e, you don't need to have an implement to be able to cast spells. The implement simply makes the spell more powerful based on its enchantment (a +5 orb would make your spells more powerful than a +1 orb, for example).

Also, some trivia. Here's a list of the implements used by the arcane classes in D&D 4e:

Controller - Wizard: Staff, orb, wand, tome.
Striker - Warlock: Wand, rod, pact blade.
    Striker - Sorcerer: Staff, dagger.
Leader - Bards: Wand, song blade.
Leader - Artificer: Rod, staff, wand.
Defender - Swordmage: Any melee weapon.

The Renegade Illusionist is a Specialty Wizard of the School of Illusion (more specifically, a renegade Red Wizard from Thay), not a Sorcerer, as the description depicts. As pointed out, Red Wizards can use their tattoos for a variety of magical things, including being an implement. As well, as stated also, implements are not a requirement in 4e. They are however a requirement for Players in Neverwinter Online, just not NPCs.

I know that, in Neverwinter Nights 2, Red Wizard of Thay is a prestige class.

I strongly prefer 2nd or 3rd over 4th for PnP. I love this game though and think the 4th ruleset works great for an MMO.
