If aggro is managed properly the Archer Ranger is a real blaster right now. I did quite some runs at Lostmauth and so far only warlocks have been doing more damage, but I'm not sure whther that was due to the Burning Guidance bug as the difference was huge (3 times more than my HR).
I had the same experience with warlocks on epic LoL. I'm not sure about burning guidance but a SW wearing broken diablolist set had nearly tripled my archer's damage. It's broken just like the buffed storm spell now. I remember seeing a ACT chart of a SW on feedback thread showing more then %50 of his damage from diabolist set's hellfire procs. Simply Over Powerly broken.
On topic, my Archer will probably retire from PVP matches since every single tool that was useful in PVP is either nerfed, fixed?!? or reworked to uselessness or at best ineffectiveness.
Hovewer, my damage output in PVE (especially in new content) is way out of charts compared to live. More importantly, I never used split shot or split the sky in these runs. Pathfinder single target damage is very high against bosses or boss alike heavy/slow elites. I found careful Attack, Thorn ward, rain of arrows, aimed shot and constricting arrow loadout more than effective. Managing aggro is not a serious problem with this setup. Also, ambush is fun to use and a simple but useful tool to loose aggro if needed.
Ive always watched this balance for my HR: survivavility one side, damage the other
my build is currently at hybrid pathfinder with a considerable tip towards damage, works wonders on PVE ans is made to increase dps and lifesteal the more combat is sustained (chants, boons etc)
do pretty decent on pvp too, GWF are the hardest for me because of the knockdowns, but can manage with the current fox shift, and thanks to disrupt/constricting am able to seize the initiative from most CW and have them teleporting around instead of trying to control (there are exceptions of course)
So now im seeing people talking about how constricting no longer works and how archery is too much glass cannon
So what's gonna happen? I like my damage tip to the balance, like to shoot stuff in and finish them off in close combat. lol I like that after you control and break them with arrows you can pull out the blades and rush towards them, its a huge psychological factor in pvp, but is it no longer viable?
My current build is full corrupted black Ice, xvim set, deflect/power/crit rank 7-8 chants with a lil bit of lifesteal, greater lifesteal overload, and mostly boons that increase power (madness, elvish fury, vanguard's resolve)
I am looking forward to this going live. I don't really care for PVP, GWF's ruined that for me with its ridiculously long period of being stupidly OP.
After reading up a lot of the changes, i do agree that archery sounds like it will do the most DPS in PVE. However i do feel its aimed more at single target damage, which could be insane. I do think the other feat trees are being underestimated though. The feat that stacks 5% damage for each foe near the ranger sounds like it has potential, especially combined with the new flurry and piercing blade and while using AOE attacks. One thing about combat is that what you sacrifice in DPS by not using the archery tree, you will make up for in survivability with deflect (especially with the new lone wolf changes) and extra lifesteal. By my reckoning its possible to get an extra 20% deflect from feats/lone wolf alone.
I run a melee/serpent build right now on my HR, and while i don't top the charts above good GWF or CW's in the current live, im never too far off. I think these changes both to the trapper and combat tree will only boost that. The way i fight now swapping stances a lot, sounds like it could work really well on the trapper tree. Lots of cooldown reduction and damage boosting, and of course, twice as many encounter uses. When you combine a stance swapping build with Marauder encounters, its really fluid.
Time will tell i guess.
One thing i would say, is that while Royal Guard gear has a nice set bonus, i found it has just too much survivability stats on it. Grand Warden is far better in my opinion for doing PVE DPS.
" Experience is a hard mistress, she gives the tests first, and the lessons after... "
Well while i like the needed dps buffs for pve i hate that they removed prime critical and correccting aim........ I had very good archery build with those based on fast encounter spamming, i loved the style of play as it was very fun, frantic and in ur face
While the trapper looks like would be the path for that i seriously doubt i can even come close to the ammount of encounter spamming i could pull off without prime critical + stormstep. Trapper lookss like it can pull off some seious dps too when played correctly though, but missing archery capstone feat is gona really hurt single target dps im thinking....
So a bit in a crossroad and dont know where to head with my hr...... ***** sniper with bigger dps or more fun in your face trapper.

yeah i never liked royal guards stats too much arpen and defense, though its like the only set bonus that looks usefull at all, gw setbonus is pretty crappy (doesnt really add much dps) my prefered path is 2 pc grandwarden and 2 pc vallindra tower set it gives the best balanced stats imho. but maybe.... going trapper full vt set could be pretty awsome... id have to readjust some arp though as it would be over the top.

Seriously mate, i wouldnt worry about your archery. 2 feats - One reduces all ranged encounter cooldowns by 50% when maxed.....50%....thats crazy. And predator that increases all your damage against one target by 30%.....also crazy. As well as lots of other great perks for general damage, crit and crit sev increases. Archery will be better than ever. Trapper will be beast for skilled mobile players, and combat is the one i am most curious about trying. I prefer melee.

They changed the cooldown reduction to 30% and predator to 40% (20% on players).

This is actually the same setup I´ve been using and it works very well. Most of it is single target or almost (if you place correctly Thorn and Rain). I was thinking about using ambush instead of constricting actually.
And Aimed Shot with Prey is ludicrous at times (I managed a 135k Aimed Shot without Vorpal on an heavily debuffed mob in the Tuern Skirmish).

Royal Guard is the best one by if you arrange your build to proc the 4/4 boon often, if you don´t it falls behind. If you use Rain of Arrows and Thorn with a Plague Fire enchantment the proc rate is pretty high and using more Rains is what makes the difference.
Anyway the fact that now you can have only one Thorn Ward up at any single time has reduced the benefits for a pure Archer.
For a Trapper it is still the best set by far, but unfortunately the Trapper is not what it could have been....
By the way defense is becoming more and more important (try Lostmauth and you´ll see).

HR seems to be just a Rogue with a bow now. It's my understanding that Hunters are controllers as much as anything else, but all the control pwrs are gone. I think the DPS is a little ridiculous now too. I'm getting triple kills like mad. Completely unnecessary. Now I have two Rogues.
Concrete Answer: You have no control powers. You're all DMG.
Yes I am. I am an Archer.
This is my bow. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my bow is useless. Without my bow, I am useless. I must shoot my arrows true. I must do more damage than the boss mob who is trying to kill me. I must kill him before he kills me. I will.
I'm loving the new trapper feat line, (like to play hybrid) using hindering + constricting + rain of arrows (gawd i hated thorn ward). now i can do some really awesome roots and dot to strong grasping roots turns constricting into a hard hitting aoe encounter. (does around 6-7k damage non crit), and hindering strike hits even harder (turns into most damaging melee encounter). Only problem is feating to extend root duration spreads out the damage dot. If you have it unfeated it will tick twice for 3-4k each quickly (can crit and scales with buffs/debuffs)
So is pathfinder superior to Storm warden for PVE dps now?
I stayed a pathfinder for the deflect bonuses. Feated full archer spec for dps in pvp. With all the CWs around being tanky is pointless atm.
Having fun one shotting people across nodes before I get hoisted up in the air and frozen to death. But this season is just pvp for lols on the HR. My CW is having fun nuking domination. 22 kills to 2 deaths this morning. On my uber squishy 20k hp pve toon.

Crazy.
No, your CW can't be having that kind of fun...CWs are broken, haven't you been reading?
I haven't been playing my HR in a while but re-feated yesterday as Archery as I plan to try out all three paths. With P terror I got several 19.3k crits with aimed shot. You probably can't use/finish that encounter much in PVP but I don't remember it hitting that hard before.

Actually, I've always had a few 20k aimed shot crits even without a weapon enchant. Atleast DPS didnt' go down.
So is pathfinder superior to Storm warden for PVE dps now?
I cant see any advantages for pathfinder in PVE? more survive rate?
Storm warden definitely provide much more dps, this game is all about CC and dps.
I try both PF and SW after model 4 in PVP. Sry I dont play PVE.
IN PVP, with nerf, internal CD 2 sec and 50% from 75% of profound, and change to wild medicine, and more important:
Increase DPS by other classes, CW, increase by developer, GWF, they force to choose dps or tanky, I believe for PVP most of them go to swordmaster now, and GF as well.
Now the situation is NO ONE THANKY any more. every one die in 3, 4 secs.
PF with combat give u 1 or 2 sec survive rate exchange for boring combat style, low dps, cant kill any one, cause u have to use ward or melee to provide dps, once u stand range, u vulnerable.
So, I give up PF combat, the hunter team work is a debuff, when every one can be killed in 3 sec, no meaning for debuff any more.
SW with full archer, give up survive, glass cannon works for me now.
Forget about capture point, forget fox ****, forget winning, all about killing.
switch all power to Sinper full dps, no ward, range is too short.
the distance is your defence. Kill CW before they kill you.
Pretty much what the guy above said. Kill 'em and cap if you can. I swapped to 2/2 grim pred. and prof. archers for an extra 450 arpen. The set bonuses are not worth it anymore. Trs, gwfs, gfs, if you stay at distance are still easy prey, cws 1 on 1, however, just kiss it goodbye.

yeah i respecced to trapper to give it a try, its pretty cool. The feat which adds dmg to the graping roots is amazing coz it actually scaels with ur dmg and crits. Easy to land 15-18k just from dot if it crits with a constricting or hindering strike. pretty good aoe aplication, and fun to be so active switching stances. It does fall behind archery dps wise though, specially singletarget.
It is a shame the change they made to aspect of the serpent before it counted per hit on the stacks (so u could spend all stacks and restack next stance with 2 aoes) now its per cast so its annoying to have to cast 4 times before switching stance... specially considering the 10% dmg per encounter feat, which would benefit so much more if u just had to do 2 casts per stance switch. _IF they sorted that out and let the capstone feat stack maybe just 2 times it would be so much more competitive dps wise.
also shame DL set doesnt benefit from the feats inthis path (was hoping it could be bis)
I had such a beautiful dps hybrid HR with focus on melee tree and about 5 points in archer and nature.... my stamina regeneration perfectly supported my AP gain. I had a very delicate balance on survive and dps, and I bolstered my recovery just enough to have a comfortable rotation of skills. I have been testing out different feat distributions on the preview shard and I am no where near dps I once was in MY PLAYSTYLE. I know PWE reinvented the HR to include this trapper tree, that should compliment how I played with a hybrid build... but this tree blows compared to what I once had meticulously labored over for months to find that delicate balance to support a hybrid melee dps. I have now played this game for over 7 months with only one character-- a HR -- now I feel cut down so hard.
its like with the trapper PWE created tried to dictate how exactly a HR hybrid should be. Not to mention they got rid of the nature tree, where I know there were a few who enjoyed playing this type of support role. My hybrid playstyle is my own; and now one that will not allow me to experience the success I once had and worked so hard for.

I think you summed it up. Before you could create your own hybrid or be something more specific. Each tree needed some tweaks. Instead its forced play now with little creativity.

Trapper is stuck with binding/contricting arrow. Oak skin is amazing, but steel breeze is absolutely awful. Then why you wouldn't want to use rain of arrows. Aspect of the serpent seems useless despite the buff. You won't ever be hitting for any damage in melee and you'd only slash a couple times just to buff rain of arrows or w/e. Just sounds like a waste of time and class feature slot.
try: constricting/hindering/rain it works pretty well for trapper.
steelbreeze is better than u think, yeah dmg sux but getting back 3-4 shiftes that fast is better survivability than oak imho.
hindering strike is awsome when feated, really awsome.... i can do over 30k dmg with it now. 10k hit and then like 8 2.7k ticks.
royal guard + pvp rings. combat + pathfinder + greater plague fire. max con possible.
dont pvp until cw get fixed.
dont pvp until blue glyphs get fixed.
Or alternatively, spec archer, go full dps build glass cannon, and enjoy yourself. Seriously, I'm enjoying pvp more now, it's like pvp used to be before mod3, fast and dirty.
Why so serious..?
The whole survival/dot thing bored the hell out of me.
No idea what my toon is now.

What would really allow HRs a decent hybrid build is to simply let us choose which melee skill is the flip side of which archery skill. Steel breeze is useless, so why not let us use constricting strike instead? Fox shift only avoids one strike, so why not boar hide instead or marauder's escape? And while the trapper tree might be good in pvp, I stopped bothering with pvp once I'd accumulated half a million rough AD. The trapper build is useless in pve, and I don't know how it would stack up to the melee build in pvp but I'm betting the melee build does more damage. As for letting us finally play the healing/support role without having to use the otherwise useless nature build, it's about time. The change to constricting shot is a mixed bag, since the burst effect is nice but now it's less than half as effective at control. I do like the archery tree a lot for pve - I've hit some 65k crits with aimed shot so I finally can contribute against, say, Valindra, and now Split the Sky is finally useful, so all that AoE damage is more than just cosmetic for the final stats.
Am I the only one who got stuck in a bug? After Mod 4 they "respecd" my character, except now I can't input any paragon feats into my tree. When I click on "commit changes", nothing gets committed/saved. I've submitted multiple tickets but so far nobody is contacting me and I can't find anyone else on this forum who has stumbled upon this weird "bug"
Would it be too much to ask for a GM to message my account and help me out?

royal guard + pvp rings. combat + pathfinder + greater plague fire. max con possible.
dont pvp until cw get fixed.
dont pvp until blue glyphs get fixed.
Or alternatively, spec archer, go full dps build glass cannon, and enjoy yourself. Seriously, I'm enjoying pvp more now, it's like pvp used to be before mod3, fast and dirty.
Why so serious..?
The whole survival/dot thing bored the hell out of me.
Would it be too much to ask for a GM to message my account and help me out?
