I'm a little confused as to which areas are open world pvp in the icewind dale content. i don't really like pvp and i want to try and avoid it.

When you open the world map in Dwarf valley or Icewind pass the open pvp area is red ,on the minimap too it is shows as a red border plus before you enter the pvp area you get a warning ,it is difficult to get flagged for open pvp by accident.

they are marked as a big red zone, you can't really miss it.

If you look on the map, certain areas will be surrounded by a red border. You should also get a warning about "Crossing the magic border will flag you for PvP". If you don't want to do PvP, just stay out of those areas - none of the open missions make you go in them...

Note that both adventuring zones include pvp areas but you never need to go into them for any reason if you are only interested in doing pve.

In Icewind Pass, it's almost impossible because the area is demarked by not only the magical border but also a stone wall and the pvp occurs down in a sunken pit.

In Dwarven Valley, I've gotten flagged by accident a few times while skirting the barrier to explore, because the boundary is hard for me to see from some angles until my mount is poked halfway through it... I'll think I was still parallel when in fact I was perpendicular and heading straight into it, moving fast enough that the final warning and the flagging happen concurrently... oops. The area where this has happened to me is really close to a safe zone to deflag though. I emphasize that this is something I've only done while riding as close to the edge as possible and there's no reason to really worry about it in the course of normal gameplay.
