Unable to gain Alchemy progression

Ok, I am attempting to raise my crafting skill in alchemy. Currently I am a level 60 CW with a level 17 in Tailoring and others high. I know how the system works. Attempted to do Alchemy tonight and I can not gain any skill progression in it at all. I click Gather Simple Components and the timer goes up. It meets with succes yet I am not getting any skill points at all.

Any ideas?

You only get experience points for doing the Alchemical Research tasks. You need to gather components for what is needed for Experimentation tasks then you do that task and you have a chance to get a Basic Alchemical Knowledge scroll. You need those scrolls for the Alchemical Research tasks.

I just thought I'd add: note the emphasis I made above. CHANCE is the operative word here. If you require three scrolls of Knowledge, it could take five or six or seven "Experimentation" tasks completed. Just be aware of that. Once you get used to this mechanic of Alchemy, everything feels natural and it works as expected. But it takes some getting used to as compared to other professions.

Note that the 'chance' of success drops with each level in a manner similar to the refinement chance, but not as steep. At level 19 you may only have a 5% chance of success.

Absolute blankety-blanking nonsense. Having now maxed out alchemy on 11 characters, roughly 1 in 3 experiments will succeed across the board. Sometimes it'll take 10 tries to get knowledge once and sometimes you'll roll a bunch of successes in a row.

The whole alchemy profession is clumsy, nonsense, illogical, and needs to be re-worked. Why was this designed so completely different from the other professions?

Shockingly enough, this morning I went 3 for 3 to advance from 19 to 20 on a character. Claimed the results of rank 18 research when it finished - got bugged on the gateway and had to log into the game before my rank advanced - and then started doing rank 19 experimenting. First attempt yielded a scroll, then the second, then the third...

I disagree. It's by far the easiest skill to level and if you prepare (or just buy the pots you need) the fastest. It's the easiest skill to get a 100% speed bonus on as well, as you can do it with the research task to go to rank 2.
