PVP is daunting for new PVPers. You finally decide you want to try PVP (it's nagging at you that you could be earning some more Astra Diamonds if only you did PVP and, besides, you've always wanted to try it anyway), so you join the domination queue, get into the arena, and have no idea what to do. Quickly, either you have a good team and you just run around following them and fighting players as you go (with no real idea of what you are supposed to be doing), or everyone else on your team quits and you're left in there alone with no idea what happened. While I wasn't too frustrated because I had fun, I can easily see how one or two matches like this will put someone off of PVP forever, especially if it happens that someone choose you out for doing something wrong in there after the match.
At least this is how it was for me. So, I went to the forums looking for a PVP guide, and all I could find was people complaining about how overpowered every other class was with no real PVP guide in sight (well, there is that one written in old English, but...well you know, we need something more practical). After reading hundreds of posts wading through all that complaining, I gleaned two things to do in PVP:
- Run to the center point and start the fight there
- Stand on that point when you're fighting (does that little tear shaped thing fill up faster if there are more people on this point?)
And what to do and not do so people don't get angry
- Don't have a slow horse
- Don't come in with green gear
But that's all I know so far. As I'm reading, I have no idea what people are talking about so, I'd like to ask those people who play PVP to please simply write down in a few words what you should do in PVP when you join.
And please explain the terminology
cap
point

As posters add new information, I will edit this original post that when people come here, they can see in bullet point form what to do when they join a PVP match.
I think a simple little post will help a lot of people, both new players and experienced PVP players, avoid some of the frustration of new players in PVP domination.

CAP: Cap the bases. When you stand in any of the bases and there is noone of the opposed team, you begin to dominate the base. If you get full domination of the base (the indicator switchs to your team color), your team will get points. The first team to reach 1000 of this points, wins the match.
Home: Home base is the more near base from you starting point. Usually the teams try to secure it with one person meanwhile the rest fight in the middle base. Middle is where the battle is more fierce. When your base begins to be dominated the teams try to re-capture because, while you dominate more bases, your team get more points to finish the match.
Indvidual points: Certain events or actions will get you individiual points. This points can give you more glory at the end of the match.
You need to get almost 500 of this points to get any glory.
Even if your team lose, you can get glory if you reach this line. Of course, if your team win, you can get more glory.
Advices:
Dont come with your PVE build to PVP, it works diferent and in many cases will be inefective.
Mark people and generate threat with a GF is very good in PVE but not that good vs other players.
For this reason, switch powers before the battle starts.
I hope this can help you.
2. The classes are deeply imbalanced and you will end up fighting teams that attempt to stack the strongest classes. They are fair people who enjoy a challenge. You should totally bother to engage with these fun people.
3. if you press k and join solo your team's communication is likely to consist of calling each other names if things go poorly. If your opposition communicates in even rudimentary grunts on teamspeak they are at an enormous advantage and if you kill someone someone else will be coming for you very soon so watch out for that.
4. At the very start of the match go to mid and fight. If you die and you see 3 friendlies standing on the home base and you know that there were 5 unfriendlies at mid you are done. Conversely if you all go to mid and some enemy comes in alone its probably going to be ok. You will be playing neverwinter pvp so it won't be good but dem's da breaks.
5. Your 5 gold mount probably isn't going to cut it. The entire thing is getting to points in a hurry and moving 50% slower than a guy on a purple mount means they are always going to be there before you. You only have to pay what 25 dollars to begin to be on even footing.
6. Your damage output isn't as important as your defence so seek out items that will boost those stats. Then be irritated by how cumbersome moving enchants back and forth between items is.
@nameexpired: I think the meaning is change your skills to ones that are better suited to pvp. You can read about PVP for your own class on the forums.
Just constantly run between your point and the enemy back point. Lets face it if you have never been in PVP before you don't have a chance of killing anyone unless they happen to have never been in PVP before either, so the best you can do is contest points and keep the enemy team split up so they can't all focus 5 v 4 teamates who hopefully aren't also brand new to PVP. If you run to the middle with your team and the other team is competent it isn't going to matter unless you are a DC you're going to be dead weight in that fight and your only value will be one more person standing on the point to make it flip faster, that's if the other team doesn't realize you are new and just focus you and kill you in half a second. Just be mobile and focus on challenging points and running away from people and staying alive as long as possible to keep them occupied until you get the gear and skills required to stay alive in the face of focused CC and DPS from more than one target.
2. Try to learn the battlefield. Open your map. This allows you to see where your team is at, as well as the different paths around. There's more than one way to get to each cap, and backcapping (sneaking around to a point you don't hold to try to capture it without the other team noticing) is a good strategy, especially for someone inexperience in fighting in PvP. There are more points in capping than in killing anyway. Learning the map will also teach you where the potion points are where you can hope to grab a quick heal.
3. Don't cap while mounted. Remember that you can be dismounted from taking damage, and this will knock you prone, leaving you as vulnerable as can be. Only use your mount for speed getting around. If someone starts attacking you while you are on your horse, consider dismounting yourself regardless of what you continue to do, to avoid the prone.

So for instance, if you are a CW, for PVE you want an INT/WIS or INT/CHA character, go either Thaum or Rene, with AOE spells and AOE-based feats. But for PVP, you want an INT/CON character, either Thaum or Oppressor, with only single-target spells and single target-based feats.
as a side note, let's please keep the pvp drama out of this thread. if you have something constructive to contribute, please do contribute it. anything that is considered unproductive will be removed without notice.
standing on a node where you`re fighting isn`t always a good idea also.
especialy if you`ve already capped it, you should play next to it hehe.
also hunters don`t want to get hit while casting aimed shot, so in that case it`s also not good to be close if there`s already fighting on the node.
ow and to realy respond to previous message, they should push the other teams side instead of going home.
and the first dying caps home i guess, something like that. in a non premade.
if i play like that i would let the weakest cap.
it`s hard to tell, there s a couple of different stories which can be made when playing for rating or reward.
One of the best strats is to split the middle battle. If you find a team that run all 5 members together to cap bases, split your team and take the other bases. You will get the advantage soon and they will be force to split or lose.
Next time don't stop mid.
Go directly to their homebase, take them by surprise and clear them.
If you wanna make it worse, run below their spawn after. Their chances to recover and win after such a start are close to 0.
Also... they will not even get 300 points if you're fast enough.
Some Generalized Tips and Explanations for PVP
*I've placed an asterisk next to words you may not be familiar with, and will have a definition at the end of this.
1.) Get into a guild, even a bad one
Exp: When someone is unguilded in pvp it typically, (there are always exceptions to the rule) means that they are new to pvp in this game. And as a result are undergeared, and inexperienced. Undergeared, inexperienced targets tend to die incredibly fast. Players who are dead cannot contribute to the fight. Thus they get focused first. Also it gives you people to queue up with.
2.) Get yourself a 110% speed mount
Exp: The domination pvp type is entirely about point *control. The faster you can move the more beneficial you are to your team. This is because it allows you to provide support, *contest *nodes, and escape *ganks more quickly and effectively.
3.) Forget what people say about fighting mid first.
Exp: While mid control is important, it's not as important as imbalancing the fight; and splitting the enemy force. Think about this for a second, if the opposing team is able to win the mid fight against all 5 of you the chances of them being able to win a second fight against all of you (unless it was a really close one) are pretty good. And part of this is because they've offset your respawn timers. That 5v5 game just became a continual 4v5 with one or more of you constantly dead. To counter this, don't move with your entire team. Split up! You want the enemy to have to spread themselves thin so you can hopefully win the smaller fights or at least keep them occupied long enough for your team to win theirs. However with that being said, you almost never want to go to home base first (or the base closest to your spawn).
4.) Don't send 4 people to kill 1 person
Exp: The only time you want to have more than 1 person from your team fighting 1 enemy player is if you have the other two nodes contested, controlled, or if you can kill the enemy in under 10 seconds. Otherwise you're losing points. And points are what win you the game.
5.) Fight on the Node unless you have node control
Exp: So this one is kind of complicated. When you have control of a node you gain points, however if an enemy contests the node you stop gaining points. And if the enemy is in control of the node they gain points, and if you're contesting the node they stop gaining points.
So while you have control of the node, you want to try and get the enemy to fight you off node so you can continue gaining points for the duration of the fight. However when the enemy controls the node you want to try and fight on the node so it stays in a contested state and doesn't give them points.
6.) Equal number of players from opposing teams stalemates capture progress
Exp: This ties into #5, when you have an equal number of opposing players on a node the capture progress bar does not move, or progress. So if you want to capture a node you need to outnumber the number of opponents on the node. I.E. 3v2 will have the progress bar filling up for whatever color the 3 players are.
7.) A single player can make a node contested
Exp: Even if there are 5 opponents on a node as long as you have a single player from your team on that node. The node is contested, and points are not being gained.
*Contested - The state in which a node is not fully under a teams control. No points are gained in this state.
*Node - The grey circular area in pvp maps with a number above them. Also called a capture point, or simply "point".
*Control - When the progress bar of a node is completely filled with one teams color. That node becomes under their control. This is denoted by the area inside the progress bar being filled in by a teams color.
*Gank - Attempting to kill someone.
+1 to this. If you are new to PVP, or if you are in PVP but you are a PVE player in PVE gear and hate it and you are just farming for glory/AD/artifact, this is something you can do and still be helpful to your team. Just go to enemy home base and stand there. Someone will come and kill you, but that's okay, just rush back and repeat.
But you do want to go to your own home base first, to get the 300 points. Between that and the above strategy, you should be able to eke out the minimum 500 points for glory.
Be tanky and defend well , hide/pester/evade/make people chace you off nodes., or have a lot of cc and cc high priority targets with a dps buddy or all out dps, easier for ranged and use terrain to advantage, which isn't as good a choice any more.
So you can at least contribute a little to some aspect without just being pretty bad at everything and just being an easy kill or total non Threat.
I think the idea is sound, but really only one player should peel back to cap home, the tanks should surge forward to meet the enemy team as it rushes forward while ranged dps stands on two and provides fire support for the tanks. Better yet we like to forget about 1 altogether, let the dc and/or cw cap 2 and have the gwfs blitz the enemy node while hey are trying to cap it. If the enemy team surges towards two from the start (like us) we at least meet them before they get there an are backed b ranged dps from 2.
Jugger Conq GF
....
I see more and more players doing this and to be honest it drives me crazy. The node reverts back to the enemy within seconds of it turning blue and there is no dps support/tankage/healz/fodder on 2 when you really really need it. I say "where the f is my team" so many times during pugs that I might as well have named my character that,
Jugger Conq GF
....
SENT IV GWF - PVP
Contrariwise, I wish *more* people would do it. I see a lot of newbies (at least, I hope they're newbies) grouping up to defend 2 (or worse, home), while the other two nodes are constantly being taken by lone members of the opposing team. Then when they've taken down the ones they're fighting - which does take a bit, all else being equal, even if the eventual outcome's a forgone conclusion - they roll to the next point and... reinse, repeat. Sure, they might win their battles... but while they're doing it, they're losing the war.
The point is not to take and hold the node. The point is to prevent the enemy from accumulating points from that node for a brief time. And this is for players who would be of no use to the team doing anything else.
here, here. divide and conquer. *drops mug, spills ale*
You know, I thought that at first, too. But I wanted those diamonds so I tried it a few times. Yeah, I die a lot, but I still think it is fun. So far, no one has yelled at me and after reading some forums about pvp for my class, hunter, i figured out a few moves and even killed some people. Yes, I have had those super dudes who realize I'm a **** and they just go right after me and kill me in a sec, but I also had some fun fights, and close ones too. There is going to be a ladder system coming up (is that today?) which is supposed to help get people closer in ability (better players with better players, medium with medium, etc.), so if that's true. i can imagine pvp being really fun.
Also, having read this thread you are way more informed than I was when I went in. I bet people screamed at me into their monitors, but luckily i couldn't hear them (and I couldn't see what they wrote either as the first few times I went in there, I didn't even have the chat open).
Anyway, this discussion is helping me a lot and to the other thread maker guy, your post is excellent, please expound on it later when the new system is in place
