Great post. I've been avoiding Foundry missions for over a week now because I had 2 in a row that were just insane with stacked mob encounters. I'd defeat one encounter and it would be so difficult and have so many mobs that I'd wind up drinking 5 heal pots. And then as soon as I killed the last one, another wave would come up out of the floor right where those were... And this would happen 3 times. Every encounter had 2 more 'hidden' beneath it. God it was frustrating.

I've just started questing now. I'm 60 with a GS of 11.6k as of 2 days ago so I'm going to give them another whirl, some I really wanted to finish but I couldn't afford to buy 50 heal pots per foundry. (Leveling as a GF was brutal at times.)

Not all Foundry quest are like that believe me. People will do what testing they can in the editor or have their friends run through it and it will be easy. So they stack the encounters. Problem is they tested it with the level 10 or 20 editor character or their friends is somewhere in that range, or they used a TR (which makes most encounters trivial really). The creator didn't take into account that most mobs get significantly harder in the 40+ range due to more abilities becoming unlocked for them (just like us). It makes it difficult to create a challenging quest for both low levels and endgame folks.

Quick question. I'm putting in a solo monster to be used as a "boss" encounter, but it's under the 'easy' difficulty. How do I change it so it's actually a boss? Or is that impossible right now?

There is no such thing as a true boss in the Cryptic sense right now. As long as your monster is a solo monster, it should be tough enough on its own. However, its categorization as an easy encounter should be taken seriously. Few players will find your boss challenging unless you mix it up somehow. This can be difficult to accomplish.

Checking back in on my question that got buried:

Is there any way to make encounters non-hostile?

I'd like to have them out there not attacking the player until a certain trigger comes up. I know you can do the NPC switcheroo, but that is very labor-intensive and limited to 50 individuals. Thanks!

Blue, what you could do is use 'Guard' encounters and then when the time comes make them disappear and have whatever monsters you want pop up.

Yes, use "Guard" encounters and just give them whatever costume you want.

P.S. if you ask off topic questions, you tend to get ignored...

So... I am not 60 yet... here is what I have been getting from my guild.

Foundry encounters are getting easier and easier once people hit 60 and start getting gear. Someone told me my two stack of very hard mobs at 60 was a joke easy. He asked if would consider putting in 3 to 5 stacks together to give him a chance to die at 60.

Anyone else experience the 60s giving out the same info?

I believe the encounter also need to scale with the level of gear with players. Players with a low equipmentgear score should have easier mobs than the player with a very high equipment gear score. For instance, a hard encounter for a level 1 character is easier than a level 10 character and, in some situation the level 30 character it can be brutally harder. Should it also be for gear score?

I am level 52 and have a gear score of 4341. I should have mobs scale to my gear scale - so if another level 52 with a gear score of 3000 would have an easier time? Does that make sense?

Out of curiosity, is the auto-balancing with levels also determined by the number in the group? ie. if I put a hard encounter in and one person plays it then it will scale to their level and be hard, but if five players of the same level join it then is that encounter still the same difficulty as if it was only one player?

Encounters do not currently scale based on party size.

I was asked to add my post to this post to keep encounter info all in one place, which makes sense, so here is the homework I did based on the current info in the foundry: (this will help people single out exactly what encounter they want instead of hunting and pecking... especially since what we end up doing is finding the attack types we want to use from whatever encounter, then re-skin it to match the rest of the enemies in our quest, which may not even be the same creature type!)

Well, I wouldn't go that far. If you want to have a quest that is well balanced for a solo player, then you probably don't want to stack encounters. But that means a group will rip through it without hesitation, so if you want to create a quest that will challenge groups then you must stack encounters. You can also stack encounters to give a specific feel, like being swarmed under. Place down 2-3 easy encounters that have a bunch of minions and you'll have a nice little swarm.

    My sentiments exactly.

My newest dungeon (and only 1 I've published) is designed with this caveat in mind. Hulks to knockdown, Plaguechanged Maws to do AOE, Berserkers for Damage. With all these turned into undead type with customized looks to give solid immersion.

This is exactly the info I was looking for!

Now if they could just give us Full Sized Dragons to use as NPC and let us have the model to re skin with - or better yet just give us DRAGONS!

Why hasn't this been stickied yet?

    HEY ALL

I want o make a quest with animals as the encounter enemy. I know it can be done, as I've played foundry encounters with killer chickens.

    How do you do it

    Regards

Use any encounter. On the Details tab, click on each individual mob in the encounter and click "Costume" under the Properties tab. Select one of the four chicken costumes from the Animals category. You might need to watch out for the base encounter's animations, which might not work seamlessly with the chicken costume.

This is a great tool. I wish it were linked in the Foundry FAQs or at least stickied here.

Within the Foundry itself, I wish the text filter to search encounters included going through the encounter descriptions so that I can find specific creatures. For example, searching for "giant" yields nothing. That's big on my wish list.
