I always liked games where I could spend time hunting for rare monsters or taking part in a huge world boss fight. I remember playing some really old MMOs where the GM would spawn ridiculously tanky and powerful bosses and the whole server would gather and help kill them. It felt like the whole server would come alive and no matter if you were level 5 or 5 levels below the monster (always made to be higher than the cap) you could help and receive rewards just for participating. Does this game have anything like that?

I used to play a game called Grand Fantasia that had world boss spawns 4 or 5 nights a week as well as GM hosted events every week inside one of the cities where multiple world bosses would be spawned , no doubt it was a zerg fest but it was also so much fun as well as the fact it got the community together , players would start to gather up to a hour or more before the spawn and chat and have a laugh and duel and stuff.
Then again that game was a lot less graphically intense than NW and the servers were a lot more stable so hosting such events didn't cause huge amounts of lag plus I'm not even sure world boss type monsters even exist in the Forgotten Realms universe .

I remember the good old days of DAoC, when that huge big MF Dragon would spawn and everyone would gather to take it down.......so long ago but so much fun..............

Random spawning special elites and Word Bosses spawning at certain times in certain places would be pretty cool.
I hate dancing with Lady Luck. She always steps on my toes.
I wish we had a system like this. World/Field bosses, drops cool stuff, hard to take down, will require coordination. I personally would like to see a boss that's impossibly strong. The boss fights we have in Neverwinter are add fests. I personally would just like to be able to fight really strong monsters and hunt them down. There's a sense of achievement in being able to take down an impossibly strong monster. Sadly only PVP has the monsters.

I'm pretty sure the Tarrasque exists in FR, and it's practically made for this kind of thing...

Wouldn't really work because of how fragmented the game is. There's only like 20 people in any combat zone at once, if that, with a bunch of instances of that zone running at the same time. Nothing really special about a boss killable by 4-5 people, that you can keep switching instances to fight again and again. This isn't a MMORPG any more than Diablo is.

In Champions Online, where there are these "world bosses", and when they had certain unique or powerful rewards associated with them, what you got was a select group of people who learned their spawn locations and timers, and would simply camp said location(s) so as to keep the rewards to their exclusive group.
If a system could be implemented that could prevent this kind of behavior, and make sure that everybody got a fair shot at any rewards associated with these world bosses, then I'd be all for it...

They could handle things the way they do the Mega-D/Viper-X/Bloodhound Fights. They pop every hour or so, are readily visible on the Map, and anyone who feels like it can participate or not.
Or try the TSW method. These things are simply too powerful for a small group to beat. You HAVE to put together a large group to take them down, in some cases over 100 people.

Champions actually had a system to prevent it, but it got removed. Maybe because it never worked properly.
When a cosmic enemy was defeated it would put a debuff on the people who fought it. If you fought the cosmic again while you had the debuff on (which lasted for 3 days) you would get instakilled by PBAoEs.
Cosmics also had the problem that the team that did the most damage got the rewards and everyone else got nothing.

How about making special lairs in which the bosses spawn? You could enter the lair from any of the instances of the map and they could host a great number of players. These lairs could be open spaces, or any kind of cave, or castle, or whatever else the devs can come up with. They could come up with a whole bunch of reasons why the entrances to the lairs is closed outside of the event time. They could do one event a night, or one every two days, and the bosses need to be hella strong so the OP players don't just kill them in a minute. Like with CTA events the bosses could do/take damages based on the level of the character that's attacking. The drops should be separate for each player with a small chance of giving something substantial and the rest should be small things like gold, professional materials, potions, maybe 100AD-1000AD and refining stuff.
To prevent things like bioshrike was talking about there could be a server wide message that let's everyone know in advance what's gonna spawn and where, with a big sign on the map to let everyone know where the event it's taking place.

Sounds like something that Champions Online is working on right now. 10 man instances that are boss fights tougher than what a normal party should be able to handle. They also rotate between them so only 1 is active at a time. They are using the queue system there though and are also introducing a new private queue system.

I don't play Champions Online, but some ideas come from different MMOs I've played in the past.
I would like to see some special Elites that spawn in random places across the different maps. I think they could be a bit stronger than single-player Bosses. The drops have to be useful, but nothing too fancy - maybe a few enchantments, blue gear and potions with a chance to get gear specific to the map they are in, like the single-player bosses.
I think that adding these random spawning Elite mobs would make the game more dynamic while we're leveling, and would also give us a bit more to do at level 60.
I hate dancing with Lady Luck. She always steps on my toes.
To have a world boss you really need to have a world for it to exist in. This game is so heavily instanced its not really a viable option to have world bosses.
Roo. Cleric. Mad as a bag of badgers, will heal for beer.
This can be a good idea..... god, this game seriously need a major content update.
Edit: And no, adding 1 dungeon every 4 months is not an content update.

This is not quite a "World boss' like you are talking about. However, there are some though but soloable "Bosses" in various areas that give a decent chunk of XP as a one time mission reward when killed. Icespire has a couple and Pirate Skyhold has one, just that I remember off hand.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.

Cant tell if troll comment. Diablo has 4 people MAX. A group in NW can hold 5 an instanced zone 50+

I loved that game. It was great fun, having 20+ and more people killing an ultra hard boss. Any level can take part, although if you are low level, you die a lot! The community spirit was strong and reinforced by such "events". Most players don't participate for the drops, just for the fun of it. You can take part solo, or as a party, or as a guild...
Don't know if NW can handle it in PE. Most likely not since normal game play right now causes lag for some already. But wish Cryptic adopts this idea of world boss and somehow come out with something that works.

I think the only real system that would work like that is a dev or community manager logging in whenever he felt like it and spawning the beast at a spot of his choosing- then posting a taunt to the population at large. Keep it human, keep it random. I fought all those big bosses in CO, without trying too hard.. and by then some or most of the drops were removed, I think- but that was a year ago.. I imagine it was much harder to get in on it when they were newish. I only went looking for them because I had a couple dozen max level chars and nothing else to do...
-Edit-- dang, I started typing this after reading BioShrike's post.. I guess I got distracted. lol
Rhyon Cawdorian GWF | Opa Loka TR | Cormac Argentus III DC | Annika Thornblade GF | Aerys Skydark HR | Bartin Findlor TR | Aellia Baalthrall CW | Lucan Hawkmoon CW | Opa Brahk GWF | Korzbyrk DC | Den Kruk GWF | Jherek Skarsin CW |
Roland Mac Sheonin GF | Tarron Direheart SW |
Players would certainly love to be 50 vs a world boss. The nearest was an invasion of PE by evil creatures, and it generated tons of lag. That's probably why they don't do that. And if, on the opposite, they limit the number of players against the boss, it becomes a CTA, sort of.
To have a world boss you really need to have a world for it to exist in. This game is so heavily instanced its not really a viable option to have world bosses.
So? You have what, 15-20 players per instance? More than enough, I dare say!!
Spawn a BIG BAD monster in Dread Ring/Sharandar. In each instance, yes. One that hits like a truck, and has tons of HP on top of heavy CC. Give him also huge knockbacks. Yeah, there you have, one scary dude you will need no less than 10 guys to beat. And, when he falls down, let him drop something valuable, like a mark or a ward. Maybe even one of the basic artifacts (around 5% of the time)
Oh, and the boss does not despawn, so if the players do not fight him, they are going to get eaten alive, one by one .
Probably around 2005-2006 I had this experience playing Shaiya and Last Chaos. In Last Chaos, a level 50ish Grand Devil Kamira would spawn in a low-20s area and basically one shot you if you got in his area and would despawn if not killed. However, the GM would control him during events to make him only debuff and that way all levels could participate. The cap at the time was in the 40s and the level 50ish monster was raid-tier so its not like a geared small party could even dent it by themselves. The area they held the events was in a desert map in one of the corners out in the middle of nowhere in order to minimize lag and also have minimum impact on people who didn't want to come to the event.
In Shaiya, the GMs did the same except for it was really high level dragon monsters. They spawned 2 and made it a race between the two main factions on who could kill their dragon first. They changed the dragon to only AoE once in a great while, at which point it would massively wipe everyone and we would all have to run back and race to kill it. In order for players not to get a hold of god-tier otherwise unreleased items (due to not even the most powerful guild being able to even put up a laughable effort before wiping) the GMs would wait until the monsters got down to 10-percent and then kill them in order to get the loot.
It was really fun and got all the players together for a single cause. It was also nice to meet GMs.
If Cryptic already has an existing world boss system, then I'm pretty sure it's not completely impossible for them to do this. Or maybe they already have plans for this. Either way I would simply like to be able to fight these sort of bosses. Very strong bosses, not add fests.
It would also be great if we could enter Epic Dungeons alone, or with an incomplete party.
So? You have what, 15-20 players per instance? More than enough, I dare say!!
Hardly an epic 'world' experience. You'd just get guilds camping the areas and leaving everyone else to hang.
In a decently designed open world MMO its possible but I very much doubt in this small scale game. Don't get me wrong, I like Neverwinter a lot. I just do not see it as an anyway epic experience and certainly not capable of large scale open world gameplay, i.e. no world boss type gameplay possible that requires a lot of people to come out to play.
Roo. Cleric. Mad as a bag of badgers, will heal for beer.
There's one in gauntlgrym, the blasphemer, but it's weak, has little HPs, and it's just good old telegraphed AoEs. You don't need more than 5 players to kill it but there may be 20 as well. It doesn't drop anything though.
