What's that thing flying around heads?

I've seen many players with a tiny little thing flying around their heads. Can anyone tell me what that is?

Ioun Stone of Allure or Ioun Stone of Might companion.

it is an ioun stone augment companion. when summoned, you gain all the stats from that companion. there are three types in the game. the ioun stone of allure, of might and there is a rare stone available as a reward for foundry authoring achievements.

it's a low cost stat boost for PVE. so yeah, it's recommended.

The only good pets for high level pve are the augment pets which besides those already mentioned include a cat companion.

What about the Will-O-wisp? I bought one a couple of weeks ago. Did I do right to buy it?

Well this is applying to high level pve, not solo things. That said the wisp has +25% Control Resist
+15% Control Bonus which makes it nice in theory for a control wizard maxmising control. As a pet that is actually summoned I don't like a single one of the pets. They will pull aggro when bypassing mobs, they will not survive standing in red and don't have the ai to get out of it, and their dps will be too low to be noticed.

I have a will-o-the-wisp on my CW as well. In addition to the nice passive bonus it provides, its main attack recharges quickly, and its secondary attack can stun or daze targets - which can occur even more frequently once it gets to 30.

Correct me if I am wrong, if my CW has zero control bonus stat, the will-o-wisp's bonus will not give my CW anything right? (i.e. 15% of zero is still zero).

And the only way to get control bonus stat atm is via the Valindra's Artifact right?

that is not correct. it may, however, be correct in pvp since companion bonuses are only present in pve.

Well, my CW has zero control bonus stat, when I equip the will-o-wisp (either as active companion or summoned), my control bonus stat is still zero...not in pvp btw..

you're talking about two separate stats. the new stat listings on your character sheet only pertain to artifacts. you won't see the companion bonuses there.

Oh... that's confusing... I can see the active bonuses of my other companions on that stat list (i.e. +def, +power.. etc) but not control bonus? So where can I see the bonus to make sure it is applied?

I could be wrong, but I believe the "control bonus" that the will-o-the-wisp provides pertains to the duration of your control powers, when used against critters in PvE. Similarly, the control resist it grants shortens the duration of control powers used against you, also only when in PvE.

How can you combine it with the sylph or other companion for that matter? Afaik the bonus only applies as long as a companion is active.

You can have up to five (at 60th) "active" companions.

Active doesn't mean summoned, it just means in an active slot and not in the idle inventory tab.

Oooh, I thought you only could get the bonus when summoned. I got 5 companions. Does it mean I get all their bonus even if they are not summoned? Because on the left upper corner I only see the bonus of the summoned companion.

As long as they are in the Active Companion slots and not on the Idle Companion slots you should get all bonuses that are listed as "active" bonuses. Tooltip on the little hand icon in the upper left corner should show you all active bonuses.

. . .I love my Will-O'-Wisp! It compliments my lightening-themed mage very well! The wisp is not an augment companion, like the cat and ioun stones. I also love my rank 30 ioun stone of allure. I have a rank 25 allure on all but one of my level 60's.

On a side note, my will-o'-wisp's "portrait"(don't know what you actually call it) does not show up next to my character's "portrait". The circular "frame" is there but it is empty inside, no pic of companion. Does anyone has that issue?

. . .Yeah, that is a known bug. I am assuming the Wisp's avatar is just off-set improperly due to it being a flying companion, so it's not showing inside the portrait window.
