I'd actually consider buying the Storm Rider Companion

The Zen Transfer freebies bonus is not enough incentive for me to buy and transfer Zen to neverwinter. However, it turns out with the combination of lockbox keys being on sale and purchasing the Hunter Ranger Booster Pack I qualified for the freebies (I'd totally forgotten about it).

Anyway, the lion mask is pretty cool and fun, but the Storm Rider Companion (next to the Galeb Duhr) is the best companion I've ever had in game. I'd actually consider purchasing this one. Not so much because she does a lot of damage or that her stats are all that great, but because she has a backward AI: survivability.

Active bonus is =55 Power and +55 Recovery - not so bad here. But more importantly because she's a Ranger with a bow, rather than being a stupid face-roller with mods, etc. - she stands back (often behind me) and shoots arrows from a distance. She aggros maybe only 50% of the time other companions do.

Just saying it's probably the "smartest" companion I've had to date (and best-looking one, too). Too bad it's so limited (Zen Transfer bonus freebie). Now if only the Devs could tweak other companion AI to work more smartly, I think they'd have a little more value than they do now, considering the extreme pricing for them (Z-Store versions being character-only, that is).

Anyway - @Cryptic Devs: THIS is a great companion. Thanks! Probably my favorite over my HotN Panther (Purple) and my Feywild Knight Sylph (Puple) and even the HR Hunting Hawke (Blue). Only my Galeb Duhr is better (but only have one of those and only ever will). All the rest are account-wide.

Moar like this plz.

Too bad that it's damage will be laughable by the time you hit 60 and do dailies.

The dailies are the part where having a companion could be nice for classes like the DC, instead they are just useless there.

i have this companion leveling up with all 4 of my level 60 characters and i do dailies with her. she's a tough cookie even with nothing slotted. :)

I have heard a couple people sing her praises. I haven't gotten a chance to level her yet though since there were other companions in line before her.

It's probably because people who say a companion sucks at 60 pretty much wants them to fight alone and kill things as they afk maybe? Or do majority of the work.

Sounds like a great companion... Unless one was stup and did not check the date on the campaign =P

Well i might try and catch the next one if/when it comes =)

Good to know the pro and cons of it as it is a fairly substantial deposit that needs to be made.

Have you tried the other companions lately? I know many of the ranged companions got a reworked AI. The ranged attack companions and healers I have used since the recent module update all RUN AWAY now from melee attackers! Finally they are acting like ranged pets instead of running up and hugging any mobs I engaged. I didn't notice this at first on my wizard or cleric while doing dailies in Dread Ring, but it became very obvious on my rogue when I kept chasing the mobs that were running after my disciple (going stealth for some of my attacks makes them beeline to my healing pet). At first I was a little annoyed (missing with some of my slower animated attacks as they moved out of range chasing my pet); but truthfully I am glad that the ranged companions finally wizened up and try to keep their distance (in fact in attempting to escape aggressive melee enemies they occasionally run into neighboring groups of mobs - bad pet!)

I'm satisfied with my SR, and I've set her up nicely. My HR leveled with no companion for a week until the SR was available just to get a sense of the SR capabilities so not to compare the SR against what I know the other companions can do.

One thing the SR does regularly is get into a position where "Combat Advantage" takes effect, drawing enough agro to keep the monster faced towards her allowing me to slip behind and pound away.

I think this is the one companion I'll spend all that AD on and upgrade to L 30.

Good Gawd-almighty I absofreakinglutely hate to admit: I agree with you on possibly upgrading this oneMellodywhr has said - she's one tough cookie. And as I've said: actually good-looking (in a very handsome way) - decent costume colors, decent animations, decent voice emotes (Sylph is among the most irritating of all of 'em). As for the comments about ranged companion AI having been updated: I admit I haven't noticed - awesome if they have, badly needed for a ridiculously long time.

As for the comment about laughable power at level 60: Pffft. A companion (the way I see it) is a lot more than just the "power" they provide. It's the whole package and all that they do in general. My Galeb Duhr is absolutely my favorite on my level 60 DC - it keeps agro off me with the elites and big boss so I can whack the adds and minion mobs before focusing on the biggie (it actually killed the Sanitarium boss all by itself in Helm's Hold before I realized it!). The Storm Rider does similar in a really good way - and the best part: it was free AND it's account-wide.

And the comment about Storm Rider grabbing agro and positioning so I get Combat Advantage: three-thumbs-up. I've been noticing that. Really, among all the companions I have, this little green is by far my favorite (at this point) and the bonus is that it was a freebie I wasn't even expecting. hence the title of this thread: this is one I'd actually consider buying - if it were for sale.

Again I say to Cryptic: hey, thanks. It *almost* placates me on the whole "was unbindable, now isn't unbindable" switcharoo on Z-Store companions.

    Almost, but not quite. LOL

    +1
She is definetly one of the better companions ... My only complaint (and it's a small one I assure you) is she sometimes can take a little while to get started, probably because she is programmed to try an get CA ... She does decent damage, and can even go toe to toe with Elites up to about lvl 30 due to AI, her damage and the auto-heal, which is not bad for a companion!

I even went so far as to socket her with an Indom. Rune just to give her a bit more of a 'kick'.

I've also noticed my nursemaid (CD) now runs away from Melee attacks (most of the time) instead of trying of facetank them, and she will now (most of the time) MOVE if she's being attacked.

I haven't used mine but a lot of people I know have sung praises over her.

However I noticed companions behaving differently in general. Even my cleric companions have been trying to keep their distance recently and honestly it has often made things worse rather than better since it hasn't been uncommon for them to back up into a whole different group of mobs.

But overall I have noticed a huge difference and increased effectiveness of most every one of my companions, especially the new HR Hawk. Well done Cryptic.

I am very happy with the performance of the Storm Rider. She does very well when it comes to getting out of harm's way, and I've geared her very well, and can see her counting for something. If only I could get her to shut up, because she is the most annoying person I have ever met. XD

Agreed, I like new AI of ranged battle companions. They dodge red zone which is just wow!
Wish they could deal more damage though -_-

And the Renegade mage is awesome at lvl 30 too :P

Yep I noticed that yesterday using a wayward wizard in a foundry. I intended to use it just as a decoy that would keep the foe away from me for 5 seconds (and then die) but to my surprise after moving to the foe and casting a few spells the Wayward wizard started to walk backwards to remain out of range of the foe.

I've noticed this too. My cleric still takes all the aggro, but now instead of facetanking and dying, she retreats and ends up aggroing another pack as well. Just as well I only use a cleric on my lowbie HR.

The fact that the CD companion doesn't just stand and take the beating anymore is great, but now they cause all kinds of annoying problems. Why in the nine hells when I daze an enemy does he automatically go and attack my companion? They're like "well if that's how you're gonna be, I am not gonna play with you anymore". I am behind him slashing and stabbing and he still feels like the Cleric that's running away, and occasionally using a healing power, is a bigger threat. These mobs have their priorities all wrong :p

This is the exact problem I'm having with the storm rider. at least half the time when she is backing away to shoot, or trying to run away from something already attacking her, she ends up pulling yet another mob. That "smarter" AI isn't smart enough to go "oh! I should try to stand far away from things that are not already aggroed".

Glad she's working well for some people, but for me she's basically a stat booster on characters that don't have a lot of other pets.

I've noticed this too since mod 2. Everything wants to end my cleric companion regardless and she runs away from me so I am chasing the monsters chasing her...

Well I think they did a really good thing, but just need to adjust it a little. I have seen my companion actually leave the room we were in, and mobs follow. It was annoying, but it was also very amusing to me. =D

Same for the action of aggro-ing other mobs- I don't know how they can adjust that, but I'm sure they will figure it out. Despite the adjustments that are needed, I still think that over all, the companion changes were one of the wins of this module.

I quite like my Storm Rider too, but it's the Cleric Initiate (the Tiefling Cleric) that I'm most impressed with right now. I only use her for boss fights and she has died exactly once in 48 levels. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw her walking backwards out of a red circle and avoid a big AoE.

I was under the impression that Zen Store pets were now account-wide and re-claimable from the Rewards Vendor.

It was from the last charge promotion.

The promotion has ended so if you didn't take advantage of the promotion, you can't get the companion.

Had a similar thing happen to me, although in my case is was one of the earlier missions, when we were in a house with 3 stories, my CD actually ran up the stairs to go and face 'dem evil spawns of hell!!! ... I was standing there, listening to the sounds of battle thinking WTF???

But on the whole I like what they have done with companion AI ... Just need the Aggromagnetic Cleric to me less, well Aggromagnetic. ... Oh and For ... goodness ... sake! Cryptic ... Please make the Panther get off it's rump quicker, instead of just standing there! I ran it with my TR and seriously, almost all fights are over before it finishes it's little bum wiggle <arrrghhh>
