Can anyone explain to me how the hell the profession resources sorting works? Because I am stumped. I see no logic in the sorting. It is not by quantity, not by value, not by type (i. e. common, uncommon, rare, epic), and certainly not by profession.
Just take a look at this screenshot of my inventory, just after hitting the Sort button.
Personally, I'd love to have my resources sorted by:
1. (Profession) (obviously certain resources will be used across multiple professions, so fall down to next)
2. Rarity
3. Quantity
Better yet, add a filter by profession button, and then make the Sort button just sort by quantity/rarity instead if randomizing everything.

It would be much better if we could have different options for sorting out inventories then just alphabetical. I would also like to see the ability to sort the currency inventory.

We should be able to sort by name, rarity, associated profession, stack size, and by "which professions that character actually has".

I agree that it's not logical according to actual use. Sadly, because most resources are used across multiple professions, auto-sorting inventory by profession doesn't seem feasible (or not simply).

I have to disagree. Grouping and sorting are common and easily implemented methods in programming. Grouping items by profession (1-to-many relationship), then sorting, is really quite trivial. But I digress.
Got my question answered, now I'll just hope the devs will notice this and take under consideration.
i rarely go into my profession materials/mats tab. about the only time i do is when i'm moving un-used mats from one character to another. and each mat's tooltip says what profession its for. for example, my CW doesn't need leatherworking mats, but i have tons of them from skill nodes and creature drops. when i first did this, i moused over each one while i was at the mail courier and sent what i wasn't using. after a while you know what mats go to what professions you've leveled up. same thing goes if you're trying to sell them on the AH.

I might be the only one who does this then. I run 9 tasks at all times on 5 characters, different professions on each and sometimes different professions on the same character. I mail lots of materials back and forth, and I like to keep tabs on what I might be running out of soon (plan ahead, what's that?!). I know which materials (by name) belong to which profession(s), but that doesn't make the interface any more intuitive. I can't just take a brief look at the resources and in the blink of an eye determine that I'm running low on green and silvery vitriol, solvent, barausk wood, simple/tough/exotic pelts and iron plates. But I guess that's just my problem with recognizing the icons and spotting them right away in an alphabetically sorted list. I mean, after 7 months of playing, obviously I must be a little dim for not immediately recognizing each icon right away.
I now realize though my expectations for even a basic profession filter list (multi-select) are unrealistic. I mean, how long did the devs struggle to fix the inventory sorting bug? It sure as hell was a while.

I review my professions materials all the time, but since I did recognize how they're ordered, I didn't have quite the same issue.
I agree that the iron/steel resources especially are difficult to tell apart at a glance.
And I don't really like using the auto-sort now because everything I pick up that each character doesn't use is below the stuff they actually do... provided I don't create any gaps by using things up.

While we're on the subject - please allow profession resources and assets to be placed into the guild bank. Thank you.
