Hi all,
someone has already hits the level 20... can pls tell me how much time I need to get the result?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
It depends on a few things.
1. Are you spending AD for zen or spending real cash to help you level it up? If you are then you can level it very quickly. If you are consistent with this method you can get to twenty in just a few days but it also depends on how many hours a day you play.
2. Are you NOT going to spend AD or real cash to help you level it up? This method will take far longer because you will have to craft everything with no short cuts and many of the knowledge tasks are completely based on luck. So the time it takes to create the ingredients for the experiment and your luck on completion will determine how long it ultimately takes to get to 20 which could be a full month if not longer depending once again on how many hours a day you play.

I forgot how much ad I spent to get to level 20 but I can personally tell you it's a complete waste of time and a waste of ad. You're welcome.;)

Hi goddessunique,
I like to raise alchemy, because I'm a DC and I need a TONS of potions to finish dungeons all the time. In addition, if I can craft some special potions, to use or sell for AD, this will be an interesting thing... (I hope there are special or healing pots at 20?)...

Special ptions don't sell in AH and for the normal one it is a lot better farm some foundry, right now Alchemy is a waste of time and money

These fine people speak the truth. Currently level 20 alchemy gives you an awesome title "Master Alchemist", and that's it. You may spend a week crafting pots and burn through them in two dungeon delves.

But farm foudry is legitimate?
I know some foundry has been banned due to farming thing: gold pits i.e.

I am going to admit it as well. Alchemy is a total and complete waste of AD and time. If you want to get potions, you are FAR better off farming them in foundry quests. To make the greater potions require so many ingredients and time just to make 1 stupid potion that in the time you made 1 you could have farmed probably a half dozen. Not only that but it shouldn't cost you anything to actually farm them where as if you are crafting it will cost you to make the minor ingredients.
Neverwinter has failed completely when it comes to crafting. There are ONLY 2 items that are even worth crafting and those are the gemmed pants and shirt for your class. Everything else is garbage and a waste of time to produce.

I think these foundries were banned for not allowing poor little spiders to fight players back, therefore abusing game mechanics. There are foundries with a lot of mobs where you can farm stuff, but not as easily.
I kinda miss spiders. They were fun.

It is not a complete waste - it takes far less time to level to 20 than any other profession, so it is very useful for unloking the last profession slot (get 3 professions to lvl 20) - once you reach that point, forget it .... just run 7-8 leadership tasks and 1-2 armor crafting tasks.
Hoping for improvements...

Didn't someone post a while ago that making one of the high end potions from scratch would take you about 24 hours and 10k AD worth of materials?
alchemy takes approximately 2 weeks to get to 20. To do THAT you have to do the first several levels in a day or 2 as the level up tasks take longer and longer and eventually are running 8 or more hours each. So when playing you research constantly (short tasks) until you can do the level up task.
My advice is to buy all the potions you need to do research, cook aqua vitae and regia in the background. I also advise having at least 4 rank 3 workers to feed your research tasks.
At the worst, you should be able to get 1 level of alchemy per day.
The upgraded healing potions alone are worth it IMHO. 2 aqua regia which is a fair amount of "worth" in the AH to make one, sure. But its also "free". In an hour (assuming blue workers?) you can make 4 aqua vitae per crafting slot (I can do 7 at once, total: 28) followed by the regia (14). Another hour makes the potions. So in an hour and a half I can make 14 improved healing potions. Now and then I make the AP potions. That is all I really do with it anymore, the profitable stuff (dyes, briefly, and gem xmutes, briefly) are dead.
The good potions have been selling for about 2k each --- you make more selling regia/vitae in bulk.
Making high end potions are a problem because they require unholy amounts of materials. A single healing potion for example (the same as the vendor sells or drops constantly in game) takes 1/2 an hour and a bunch of stuff. While I am willing to upgrade my looted potions, I am not going to be making THOSE for sure.

this. +1
i don't do much with it but it certainly was faster to level than leadership.
yea I did not say it but as one of your 3 to 20 unlock a slot choices, its a winner and for that reason I recommend it for everyone. Hard to beat a < 20 day level 20 prof, use it or not. Compare to leadership... mine is level 18 and I have been doing it with overnight tasks since 2 weeks before the game went out of beta....

This. Alchemy is by far the fastest and cheapest to level up. The only point to level it up is, however, to unlock an additional slot.
I did the math for the cost to make one grater heal. With all the supplies you need from the profession vender i.e. things you can’t gather, it added up to 7 silver per greater heal. Just buying the heal cost 7.5, so for all the work/time, you only save 50 copper.
(will post the math when I get home if anyone wants to check it.)

Alchemy doesn't have to cost you any ADs to level up at all.
The main thing is that on a first character levelling it, to do it on the cheap, you'll have to spend quite a lot of time on hiring and training your dudes, and also plan fairly far ahead accumulating materials. You will need to spend quite a lot of coppers on solvent, and a certain amount on brimstone and quicksilver. These are the unavoidable expenses. Also, it's worth it to invest in a bunch of cheap worn crucibles.
Make blue and green vitriols. Always do this in batches to conserve solvent, even though it takes longer. Also, look ahead to what you're going to need for your experiments. As you gain access to rare potion batch-brewing tasks, do those instead of making single potions. Again, it takes longer, but this is where all the crucibles come in. Stack those onto the task in the bonus slots, and you end up with a reasonable chance of getting extra potions. Do this for all the minor and lesser potions, except healing because you ought to be able to get lots of those for free from killing easy mobs. (For my first guy, I did break down a few times and buy some potions on the AH when I ran out before enough experiments were successful. I also sold some when I had extras and probably ended up profiting off the whole venture.)
Soon, everything you do will also require Aqua Vitae. Only make Aqua Vitae in singles until you unlock the task to mass-produce them. At that point, you'll also need to be mass-producing yellow and silver vitriols. You can also make dye at that point, which might not be a huge money-maker, but it's fun and essentially free. Again, stack crucibles and sometimes you'll get extra dye packs.
For the experiments using the mid-size potions and higher, I never needed to make or buy a single one, because I had lots from drops and potion packs from redeeming promo keys. The early levels pass by so quickly and anything-but-healing potion drops are so rare at that point that there's no time to accumulate a reserve. This wasn't an issue with the later ones, so levelling actually become easier the higher I ranked up. The slowest part was that on the highest level experiments, I would regularly have to stop to make more Aqua Regia whenever I ran out, no matter how much of a reserve I'd thought I'd laid in.
So, with one character with Alchemy at 20, I have started training it on everyone else, and that's easier by far because now I can share resources, getting materials to make the early potion batches from whomever is idle, and actually brewing the potions using the first guy who has all the tools. I just have to take the time to mail all the stuff to whichever character needs it next, and keep restocking the potions as they get used up.
I found that the success rate of experiments averaged out to roughly 1 in 3, by the way.

Thank you beckylunatic for laying out the basics. Is there some sort of a leveling guide for Alchemy out there somewhere?

The only way to increase Alchemy is collect Basic Alchemical Knowledge from Experimentation task
Do always the material strictly needed for the exp task, and you are on the right way
It is worse than that I think.
1 major healing uses 6 brimstone (6 silver??)
and 2 AR (4 AV). A batch of 4 av takes 2 solvent (40 copper) and 14 solvent for the vitrol extractions. Call it 3 silver.
so to make a healing potion by making 1 batch of 4 vitae turned into 2 regia.... costs over 9 silver for one. It may be less if you make the vitae one at a time?
I think one upgraded potion is worth close to 20 silver in materials. And that does not count the gathered mats that are "free" which also have a value. I would not be too surprised if the total value is over 1 gold per potion given the value of the wood and skins and all.
