Anyone remember EQ? I do. Especially that one bit where you had to constantly have food and water in your inventory. The consequences if you didn't? You ended up starving to death. And when you're very close to dying Pain and Suffering would suddenly appear and attack you even if you weren't in combat...
And let's keep this a nice fun thread free of complaints about what you think NW needs....
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
Neocron
being shot down while looking at your bank or mail cause you could PVP in any not safe zone and sometimes IN safezones. also every time they tried to fix anything something else strange would break.
" we are fixing grass graphics in the wasteland"----somehow this makes my hair float 3 feet above my head.
we are fixing lag issues.... and somehow changed all my characters to Male Spys that look like neo...
at least the bugs in this game...make sence.
big additions to neocron was
1. a less intuitive UI
2. taxis that would transport you 20 feet at 1/5th normal walks speed and had a 60% chance of Killing you.
3. huge open world zones noone ever went to cause there was no reason to.(and they were typically bugged)
4. more ways to try to prevent people from making cars from newbie dungeon loot.(they never succeeded)
5. raising subscription rates
6. making the big place people gathered to sell stuff a open pvp zone.
7. making the most effective way to max constitutaion to stand in your apartment and have your friend shoot you in the face.
Dying you'd lose a random item(pray it was not rare) and all your implants(mods) would pop out and youd have to pay to get them put back in
I loved neocron... I wonder why everyone left?
Seed. (live 15 a month)
took 45 minutes to walk out of a door 10 feet straight ahead due to crash bugs.
IF you could get out of the starting area you were ok.
once you got to the crafting area you couldn't craft cause tools costed about a million credits If there were any available at all.
and people bought up ALL available resources that renewed at 3 am every morning.
then used them to make useless items that sold well to npcs.
you couldn't do any questing without the tools either,
no idea why it closed after a month
Genesis MUD.(still around and free to play)
the only real money purchase was zmud or similar telenet program that allowed for mapping and scripting allowing people to just level automatically.. though if caught botting the devs would kill you.
Dowsides
no graphics,
Often a lack of people around cause they are all playing WOW and NWO
have to be nominated by PLAYERS to get a class (see the downside above)
death penalty was a chunk of XP.
you lose ALL equipment if you log out.(except for bags, herbs, and quest items)
if you log out at a non start local you lose bags herbs and quest items also.
Upsides
Most players are at least moderately literate.
Relatively balanced pvp. open world.
challenging quests (so old none of the quest cheats are accurate)
Decent rp (when you find people)
Crafting/gathering produces useful valuable goods (that drop if you logout)

I am glad I don't have to go to some sort of rental spot to pay to then watch my character ride/fly to some predetermined other station/stop.
I am glad that I don't have to devote months or even years in order to get to end-game, (though it does need to be expanded upon once you do get to max level).
I am glad that I can solo with any class.
I am glad that not all powers have a cooldown.
I am glad that there is some way in-game to earn cash shop currency.

EQ deaths were even worse. In addition to loosing experience (including levels) you respawned without any gear and had to do a corpse run. And not in ghost-form as in WoW. You had to get to your old body and loot yourself to get the gear back. Mobs in the area would still happily attack you making getting things back potentially VERY frustrating. And if you weren't sure where you died you might not even find your body since things like waypoints and built in mapping weren't around.
And keeping in the EQ spirit:
"Train to Zone!"
Camping spawns.
Having to carry food (already mentioned in the thread but boy could that be annoying.)

What about the rumour that carrying a plains pebble slowed down the consumption of food and water??
Anyway, my vote would have been not relying on the Trinity (tm) - but seeing the abuse that people still get for healing / tanking in this game, and also the weird group make-ups that purposely dismiss certain classes, I'm not so sure this is really the way forwards.

Add to all this waiting for boats. Either waiting at the docks for the boat, or waiting on the boat for the trip to finish. Such a waste of time.
And lets not forget the painful. "I bound myself in a bad location, and now im stuck in an endless xp destroying death loop"
Repair bills, corpse runs, exp loss on death... Basically, anything that punishes death on top of losing progress within the dungeon or fight. I can understand why there ought to be a penalty for dying, but deaths in online games are not always the player's fault. Game crashes, come back, dead. Internet decides to hiccup, after a few lag filled seconds you find yourself in lava with no way out. Gotta use the bathroom really bad, come back and some dude's camping your corpse. That's the main reason why I refuse to do Hardcore mode in Diablo 3, because I really don't feel like having a character I've played for months get permanently killed because Blizz can't bother to get good servers.
I'm rather on the fence about the whole Trinity thing. On one hand this is more of an action RPG, where you go in and whoop monsters, relying on your ability to dodge and time defensive abilities as well as potions to survive rather than a designated meat shield and heal bot. On the other hand, for group content you really need people who are more durable to take unavoidable hits for you or heal you up from getting beat on by five enemies. The game seems like a mix of Diablo and Everquest, kinda like a gateway game between the two and because of that feels strange to someone who enjoys both kinds of games. I often find myself wishing that tanks were tankier and heals were healier, while at the same time glad that dungeons are more than "beat up whatever the tank is hitting".

Customer Service...
On reflection customer service went out with the introduction of MMOs!
~food and water all the time
~ten million buffs prior to doing anything meaningful
~the lack of trinity run around like a chicken with your head off group play (GW2)
~being forced to group for any loot that's worth anything (Gw2)
~xp loss when i died (EQ)
~permanent death so I had to start over
~waiting a whole year for new content (thank you for the foundry all I'm saying) particularly bad for WoW when nothing new happens forever but they still expect you to keep paying (WoW)
~waiting three weeks for support just for them to close your ticket (LOTRO)
~flying mounts that completely remove any obstacle when traveling and trivialize the size of the world.
~no class trainers
~no Pet Trainers
~no DPS meters
~rotation lite
~old fashioned LFG system where you actually have to post in chat to get a group
~no repair bills
~travel is not a money sink (GW2)
~you actually included mounts! (you have no idea how bad a game travel time is without it until you play one without a mount or vehicle trust me)
~trinity lite (keeping the trinity to some degree but still keeping the players responsible for their survival so people aren't standing around blaming the healers and tanks all day because they were stupid and stood in the fire.

I am so glad someone mentioned Everquest! I tried playing it recently - I know the game is 14 years old and I wanted to see the hype - and people are still stuck in the nostalgic past there. I was floored when I was told that I had to keep requesting in some dated chat channel to get a group for a dungeon. I know some people don't like it, but I love dungeon and PvE queues and I'm glad they are in this game. It's so throwback and unneeded to "spam" a chat for LFG. Go PvE queues!

Ah... this brings back memories of Star Wars Galaxies before they tried to "fix" it. Where you had to be buffed by a medic before even attempting to put armor on...

Heirlooms.
They killed low level PvP in WoW and really had no place in the game, the xp bonus was usefull but the stats been many times better than any gear at that level was just stupid and killed the game for new players (and blizzard wonder why new player rention isn't high). They also ruined low level dungeons, tanks have no chance to learn when they have a DPS heirloom tanking everything.
Also Gear repair from most old school games, was a royal pain having to spend a fortune if you where unlucky to be in a bad group (I suppose potions are this games version).
Another thing I'm glad about... in many RPGs (ESPECIALLY from Japan), the strongest piece of armor was female only....
It was a bikini... O_O

I Liked this game until reaching the 30's - 40's levels, then it just becomes unplayable as a single player. My trickster character and companion are taking 2000 - 3000 hit points from minions. In combat my companion last about 20 seconds and me about 40. What is the point of leveling up if you end up weaker by far than when you started?
Spoils the game. I get to level 22 now ant delete the character and start again, although I imagine this will soon become tedious and I will take myself off to another game. One that makes sense.
Runescape
grinding

WOW
intro to game, Shaman setting up totems in front of first mission giver and slaughtering the dozen or so new players until they stopped respawning
being unable to get missions because of people killing the NPC's
being unable to buy/sell stuff- same reason
being attacked by random people usually at least 10 levels higher.
hearing losers over zone chat "My level 21 twink is pawning level 10's. It's great" I pointed out that it was the same as a level 11 killing level 1's they had no chance to attack or defend. and that he was a pathetic loser. Sudden silence
LFG gear and spec tree check beforehand - cookie cutters
elitist jerks(actually there is a thriving population of them here)- "Why don't you know how to do this dungeon? You should know all the boss fights before going in. what gear do you have."
The tank left after listening to this idiot and the replacement tanks comment was "This is my first run, can you tell me about it"
"OH great , I'll tank. You'll be useless."
What I miss from the other games- being able to explore.

Also glad they dont have class trainers.
Also glad they dont have the tons of action bars.
Glad there is a way to earn the cash shop currency
Glad that there are various methods to build your character in any way you can and play accordingly. (being an intelligent warrior for example).
Glad there is various activities to do ingame and being rewarded for playing normally, no matter what you choose to play and how you play them.
Glad there are methods to make your own things and area (foundary )
Glad there is good monster/enemy diversity instead of reskinned same stuff.
