Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm having trouble with my character missing. I was away for a few weeks and when I went to log in last night after downloading the patch, my character was gone. I've read some discussion about servers being 'down' but I couldn't see any proof of that. I also read about switching servers, which doesn't see to be possible. Can anyone help me figure it out?

Well I can tell you your first two thoughts of the cause have nothing to do with the missing character. Neither would cause any loss of characters.
Now by a few weeks you don't mean before April 25, do you? In which case characters were wiped between Closed and Open Beta.
If that's not the case: what was the name of the character?
Characters don't get deleted due to inactivity. My best guess is your account got compromised and the hijacker deleted your character. There's no system which would remove characters from accounts except with the possibility of the character name being deemed offensive or rule violating which Bria Nightshade is not.
P.S. I do not know how rule violating names are handled. They more than likely do not delete characters due to character names but it was one such possibility I tried before referring butterypie to support.
Nope, I mean mid-July. I went out of town and haven't been able to log in since July 17th.
Her name is Bria Nightshade.
. . . . . Just because I've heard this almost exact same thing before: Make sure you're logging into the correct account. There was a report of this a while back and it turned out they were logging into their alt-account by mistake, an account they rarely used.
. . . . . If this is not the case, file a Support Ticket (not a bug report) as soon as possible and give as much detail about the characters lost and a general time-frame. If you account was hacked, they will have records of what happened and may be able to work with you on a resolve. Support link is up top every page in this site.
. . . . . Then please follow Ambsinisterr's advice and my advice in the second paragraph. Unfortunately, we cannot offer forum support for Account & Billing issues such a this, for it needs to go through the proper Support Channels. Wishing the best for a speedy resolve for you. You may want to include a direct link to this thread in your Support Ticket and then relay your Incident Number here.
I filed a support ticket, but haven't heard anything and am getting the idea that I won't for a while.
. . . . . Unless that have Support working the weekend for some odd reason, you'll have to wait until they get into the office on Monday and then get to your ticket in the line of Tickets. You can edit your ticket and reply to it through the Support Site and include more/missing information as a reply to the Ticket.

Sadly the people on the forums do not have the power to help you passed basic trouble shooting. You will have to wait for a response from support which can take a deeper look into the details of your account.
In the mean time you can always start up another character even if you end up using it as an alternate character later on.
Are you using your old Cryptic account to log in? Not long ago PWE forced us to merge our cryptic accs. with our PWE accs. If you log on a PWE game by using your old cryptic acc. data the characters created will be gone, since it is the wrong account.
There should be tutorial threads about how to merge accounts.
P.S. I do not know how rule violating names are handled. They more than likely do not delete characters due to character names but it was one such possibility I tried before referring butterypie to support.
Cryptic's policy on name violations is pretty standard. Characters do not get deleted. Simply renamed to Badname(RandomNumber)@whatever. In extreme cases, even the @handle can be renamed to @Badname(RandomNumber)

Here is a clean link to include in your report:

I hope this helps at least a little bit.
Good luck.
