In most MMOs, especially new ones or ones where new classes/races have just been introduced, there is some market for crafting results for the mid-range levels.
Not so in Neverwinter.
I see two main reasons for this:
- People get plenty of drops that are generally about as good (give or take) as anything a mid-range crafter could produce.
- People are going to spend so few game hours at a given level that they will outgrow anything they find or might buy anyhow.

You are correct there is basically no need for anything mid range (except pants and shirts and it's not really worth buying those).
It would make sense if your crafting could even possibly keep up with the leveling but it is almost impossible unless you stop playing the game entirely and JUST do crafting.
I gather you are under the impression that crafting becomes useful at level 20. Perhaps if you drop 2,000,000 Astral Diamonds into crafting tools you can make meager profits based on chance.
There is no point to crafting-- mid range or max level.

Actually if you have the AD to burn being a crafter is probably really good right now - Dragon's Egg prices have fallen enormously but Gemmed Shirts/Pants prices haven't....

But leadership is great and I usually only send this little buggers off on their adventures. Heaps of boxes and AD - not really crafting but hey fills the space.

I think they learned with Alchemy and tried to keep low level tasks a bit more essencial to the rest of the skill...
But at the same time they also greatly impeded the high level content as something which should be a hefty reward for training alchemy, Distilled Greater Potions of Healing, require too much of an investment to be a good reward. It costs two Aqua Regia which is four Aqua Vitae so basically 4K Astral Diamonds per potion last I checked.
Furthermore it takes an obsenely long time to make just one potion that it was truly a bit of a disappointment upon reaching level 20.
In short alchemy is better at giving the low level tasks purpose but it killed the high level tasks and thus, along with other factors, negated the usefulness of the skill.

Agree crafting mid & max level is not worth it.
There was rumor of binding of crafted items which would be truly horrible.
Strange anomaly: high level non-gemmed shirts/pants are worthless approx @ 10 AD
but level 15 Sturdy shirts/pants @ 400 AD
still lots of new players joining

Meh. I just craft for my own purposes so most of this stuff dosn't effect me, but yeah crafting seems more of a moot point in NW. More for helping level your character along a tad bit faster.
Wait, What? Why is it pointless. I love crafting +5 platemail that takes 12hrs unless you have green, blue or purple assets that cost real money or more real time to get...What a joke...I was just logging in to craft and pray because I'm done with the content and then I decided to check what I can craft when I get to 20 and no thanks...

*Counts money from today's sales of dye packs and shirts*
What?
I own a grand total of 4 green tools (all multipurpose) and a lot of green and blue dudes mostly bought while prices were tanking during the Lillend craze. The green dudes are primarily to fuse into more blue dudes as time and levels allow... they were really cheap. I was planning on using all this for faster crafting levelling and then selling them all, but when you can sell the products as fast as you can make them... it makes sense to keep the stuff that allows you to make things faster.
I can't obtain the rank 3 results with my equipment, but I get the rank 2 results about as often as you'd expect with a 32% chance for piling on worn tools, or 48% if using 2 greens and 2 worn. And the rank 1 results sell too.
People get hung up on the idea that they need the best stuff and don't stop to think about what might be good enough.

That's because to be competitive in any market you need to be/have the best, therefor only the best are

Right.
So how am I making all these sales again?
I'm not losing money. My profits are probably 80-90x the materials cost.
And my asset investment was minimal. Mithral-schmithral tools.
