Help! Launcher Issues...Pulling hair out...

First, my main comp went down due to a video card failure which should be here shortly.

Second, my 2nd comp played STO fine with no problems. Haven't turned it on in about 6-8 months. Installed neverwinter before checking to see if STO worked. Now neither launcher will load, i get the process but pegs cpu at 99% and stays that way without creating a task. When i quit using the comp, it was because of a virus. So, wipe, format, clean install, all drivers updated and windows updated. SAME PROBLEM. lol.

No matter what i do, the launchers will not appear. I have searched and tried all the solutions regarding launcher issues to no avail. All i get is a process thats pegs cpu use.

Using windows XP SP3
1.5 GB Ram
2.2 GHZ CPU

Nothing spectacular on this comp but it did play STO just fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thx!

. . . . . Drats! Please file a Support Ticket (File it under Game: Neverwinter / Category: Tech Support > Install/Patching/Network) and then relay your Ticket Number here. Also, please include a link to this thread in your report. Here is a clean link for this thread: http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?426451

. . . . . Please be advised that Support is still working through back-logs tickets and there is no way I can help bump Tickets above others, gotta wait in line sadly. *the mage frowns*

. . . . . However, when my Community Managers are in the office tomorrow, I'll ask them if they've heard of anything about this and if they have, I'll let you know.

    Well I am at a loss! :(

Never had this type of issue, every other game i try works. Only the cryptic games don't.

Could this, technically being a 3rd comp accessing the game from the same ip, be causing the problem? Even though only 2 are connected due to the other having hardware issues and not running, but still stored? Only other thing i can think of...

And i'm tired and going to bed, been trying to resolve this for about 24 hours now, not straight, over 3 days so far. lol.

. . . . . Hmm, very peculiar. Just a side though but it's probably got nothing to do with this. Maybe try going into your Account Guard, link below, and removing all other access allowances to your past computers/browsers. Only log in here if you are SURE you are clean of viruses, as this is the only place you can access your Account Guard Settings.

    . . . . .
If you're brave, you may try disabling Account Guard temporarily to see if that helps. However, you shouldn't be encountering the Account Guard security feature until you access the Login Server through the loaded Client or the Web Address below.

. . . . . That up above probably has no bearing on your issue, good info though since you had past computers set to access it.

Try this maybe, as perhaps the launcher is running but hidden, which is a known bug. Maybe you have a varied form of this issue and this may help? You might have already tried this though.

    Hi everyone,

We've seen some reports of the launcher being stuck minimized in the taskbar. We're currently looking into a fix for this, but here's a workaround for now (thanks, uglyjimmy!):

    1. Start Neverwinter
    2. Start Task manager
    3. Applications tab
    4. Right click on Neverwinter and press Minimize
    5. Right click again and press Maximize
(Now launcher is there but Maximized over everything)
    6. Escape to close launcher
    7. Start Neverwinter and there is your launcher again, visible and in normal size.

    Thank you!

Hmm no luck there either, if it would create a task then i would have something to work with, but all i get is a process, nothing else.

. . . . . While waiting for Support, I'd browse our base PWE Support Forums, as there might be others posting there from other games with similar or the same issue. I inquired this morning and nothing rang any bells with one of my Community Managers, a thought he had is that something may possibly be blocking the process from executing fully on your computer.

    Here's PWE's base Support Forum:

    Round 4...lol

Ok, the best i can tell, it is on my end.

I keep getting replies saying to try this and that but i have none of the things people are suggesting to try.

    I have...

D:cryptic studios/ 4 files both executables and uninstalls
    D:cryptic studios/neverwinter/ 0 files
    D:cryptic studios/neverwinter/live/ 0 files
    D:cryptic studios/neverwinter/live/piggs/ 9 files all *.hogg
    D:cryptic studios/star trek online/ 0 files
    D:cryptic studios/star trek online/live/ 0 files
    D:cryptic studios/star trek online/live/piggs/ 11 files all *.hogg

Both launchers stop after the processes start, i get no task/application. The only way i can tell something is happening is by the process pegging cpu use at 99%.

I even tried copying both working directories from my other computer and still have the same problem.

Uninstalled and installed more times then i can remember and downloaded the package from various sources.

The only difference i see is a pando media booster, could this have something to do with my problems?

It's almost like the process is being blocked or having problems finding what it needs, not sure.

Are you sure your firewall is not blocking it? What firewall are you using and do you have Windows Firewall enabled?
  • elkysiumelkysium Member Posts: 161 Arc User

Yeah, i can't even get to the point where the firewall comes into play unfortunately. At least from my experience so far, once the game client is initialized then the popup for the firewall will show. I have literally tried everything i can think of. Everything is fully updated and all drivers for all hardware are fully updated. Java, mscvr*.dlls installed. I removed and even disabled the account guard, no luck. Tried the maximize, run as admin. I unfortunately don't know where to look or try anymore. The only problem i have is getting the launcher to open with cryptic games...

It's funny my other 2 comps work just fine, had the idea of trying the comp that had the video card fail, and using the onboard video, worked fine...but the 3rd comp...like its blocked. Dunno, never had an issue like this relating only to a certain manufacturer's games.

. . . . . I'd try temporarily disabling your firewalls and launch the launcher. If it loads, reinitialize your firewall(s) BEFORE signing in. You'll then need to go into your firewall(s) and manually allow Neverwinter.exe and GameClient.exe - What firewall(s) are you using?

. . . . . If that is of no help, connect your Computer Directly to your Modem (not through a Router) to see if your router is blocking the connection. You'll need to reboot your Modem when you do this and maybe even your computer to get the DNS to update properly, then rebooting again when re-connecting the router.

Windows firewall, disabled it, added exceptions, nothing. The process won't go into an application. Router is from AT&T, tried resetting, changing ports, nothing. The weirdest thing i've seen so far. If i had to guess it's in the coding of the executable itself, but that's just a guess.

Just to clarify, i have no game client mirrored or downloaded, the launcher will not open to download or connect or do anything but pegs cpu use at 99% with only a process. There is no window or items in the task manager application tab, nor anything on the taskbar.

All 3 systems running the same OS, WindowsXP Pro SP3

    Had another idea...

Installed Arc, shows games installed and ready to play, hit play, same problem...lol

I officially give up now! :p

. . . . .I can only imagine how infuriating this must be. I cannot think of anything more to tell you to try, while waiting for Support, other than uninstalling it all again and then when initially installing the Launcher, choose a custom location like C:/My Games/ instead of the default location it wants to install in. I'd also install it to the same drive/partition that your OS is on.

. . . . . You might also want to look up the free version of CCleaner and run their registry checker and fixer. Do note, Windows Firewall is not adequate enough to keep you safe. You may want to look into an actual Firewall someday, like Norton Internet Security. This might be why you were able to get infected in the past and might possibly be infected now. What Antivirus do you have?

I have a dedicated drive D: for games.

    Done CCleaner already

No virus, clean install, use malwares antimalware, tried disable, nothing.

Don't use antivirus software, we could argue till eternity on what their actual use is for...

Never have virus or infiltration problems...

(and yes i know i said i got a virus on the comp, but i accidentally allowed it :( )

If you haven't tried malwares software, try it! It's awesome.

That would be the only thing i haven't tried, putting the game on the same drive, here goes...

Reinstalled back to D: same problem

Mem usage seems to stop at 3900K every time.

And i give up again. lol

    Think i'll watch a movie...

    Thanks for all your help!

Cryptic email says they are aware of this problem and trying to find a solution...
