They said they planned to merge all 3 servers into 1 Megaserver on launch. It would make getting groups much easier (Not that thinks are dead, more people around just means more stuff to do) and GG would come more alive.
So any news on this? Last I heard was a Q&A with a Quote something like this
"Is there more than one server in Neverwinter?
We are anticipating a high volume of players at launch, more than we can support with a single server. At first, we will be launching with more than one server option, but plan to expand our technology some time after launch to allow all players to co-exist on a single server. Please see SECTION VI for more information.
AND
Why will Neverwinter have multiple shards when Cryptic's other games run on a single shard?
We believe that having all players in a single game world provides for the best user experience because it allows players to play, interact and trade with others without having to worry about which shard they are on. Launching a new online game is an exciting time, where new hardware and new software meet a large user population for the first time. Hence, we have decided to launch Neverwinter with three shards, to reduce the risk of players having a negative experience due to servers overloading. Our goal is to continue to optimize our software and hardware so that we can merge the three shards into a single seamless game world soon after launch, and we have built our multi-shard technology with this in mind. For example, we are requiring guild names to be unique across all shards, so that when we do merge the shards nobody will have to change their guild name due to a naming conflict."

It will happen sooner then later because after the failed new launch feywild if it fails the people that came back to try it out will leave and more people will leave with them so they when the server merges happen it means the death of the game is soon to follow.

. . . . . There are no official plans yet for a time-table on the upcoming Shard Merge. The only plan they have at the moment is that they want to eventually merge the Shards into one Mega-Shard (akin to STO). Keep in mind, all three Shards are actually the same Server, just three "shards" in the same Server -- it's their "Multi-layered Server Technology" they introduced with the new Neverwinter Online Client and Server Hardware. The one available Test Shard is on its own Server however, if memory serves correctly.
It will happen sooner then later because after the failed new launch feywild if it fails the people that came back to try it out will leave and more people will leave with them so they when the server merges happen it means the death of the game is soon to follow.
Yeah the plan they had the entire time to merge the servers means that when they merge the servers the game is dying.
I would imagine they also wanted time to make sure the game would be successful before investing in the aforementioned equipment to support merging all shards. Can't fault them for that.

I hate to ask but why did you post this? What evidence do you have to support this claim? See the post by the mod, they are already on one server that is split, if they planned this from the beginning why would it mean the game is failing. So negative....
It is what it is:cool:

. . . . . Indeed, I can say with certainty that they chose to, even in Alpha and through Beta, have multiple Shards for us to Test on. It was also stated (one might be able to find it in the dev tracker, way back) that they want to start with multiple servers to try and minimize any issues during the initial rushes and and make sure the server can handle their multi-layered technology by subjecting multiple shards to waves of players for open beta and launch. That is when they originally stated their plan to eventually merge and then later reiterated that in the Extended FAQ and multiple Dev Posts since. They also stated that their multi-layered technology will allow them to easily add Shards also.
. . . . . So a shard merge would signify nothing more than the technology performing as they hoped. This is why one cannot make a character with the same name on multiple shards - because they planned it all from before the game even went into Beta, probably even before Alpha. I think it was wise of them, indeed.
plus they will not allow us to transfer toons from one shard to the other. I didn't know which shard to choose at first, so I have two toons on two shards and they cannot share resources. Please merge the shards soon.
It will not signify the death.
Plus if they would get the current content fully realized before jumping into new content would be nice. Like having the training manuals to increase companions abilities. Like having all the classes and races.

So if the server merges are still in the air, with no ETA whatsoever, are server transfers available? I really want to play with my guildies.
It won't be a long term problem so any time spent developing such a system would be, in the long term, wasted.
It's by no means a simple task to create shard or server transfer systems. As a programmer my rule of thumb is: the simpler the general public believes software is to develop the harder it is in reality.

Except that it's already been stated that the shards are nothing but shards of the same server cluster. So all the data is in one place already. I can't fathom any programming that would allow for easy merge of data within that cluster that wouldn't allow any easy toggle of data within that cluster.
That and "it won't be long term" is a hard argument to make when it was already said that the merge would occur shortly after the game went live and we're getting close to the end of any reasonable definition of "shortly after" with no ETA in sight.

Yep, work smarter not Harder.
For those wanting an ETA, Ill try to fit it in on the next NOCS
