When the servers finally merge

I reside in North America and made the mistake of creating my characters on the Dragon shard.
Will I be able to play on NA server when the servers merge or will I be forever tied to a Euro server?

    All servers are American servers.

Seriously? Wow do I feel foolish.
Much of the Zone chat is in languages other than English so I assumed that I was on a European server. :)

All shards are open to players internationally. It's the shards that will eventually be merged.

All servers are geographically located in the US, afaik.

Why would you want to merge the servers?

No one knows. I imagine when people know it will have been announced by Cryptic.

i think i asked it a while ago - it MAY happen, without any given date. Could be months or years.... or whenever populaiton drops low enough.

And whats with these profile picsOo who messed up the forums.

Because they said they would merge them and some of us have friends on different servers. Plus, it would be nice to have some more pvp competition.

To have the one super server like in STO and CO?

What purpose does having multiple shards serve? The only reason is to reduce load. If load is not an issue it is better to have no segregation, more population = better experience in almost all aspects.
Games don't normally die by having too many people playing together.

    Server =/= Shard

You're correct and the common misuse on these forums is calling shards servers. The shards will be merged into one on their super server. They dont plan on keeping the 3 separate.

Population is kinda getting low. Maybe it's time to merge all servers.

I think they had it planned for near release, but still are working out the kinks. That could take a while, maybe after the new module, but I think they still have a long way to go in sorting out the lag.

It would be better though, to have all instances fall under the same shard. Queue times would probably speed up, let's hope new characters may even get two skirmishes in before they level up.

Really wish they would hurry up. I have a 60 and a couple 40s on Dragon. Recently joined a gaming community (TAW.net) "The Art of Warfare" and they play on Beholder shard exclusively. I had to create and power level a new toon just to play with them. Would be great to have all my toons on the same server. :'(

It cant happen fast enough. Its annoying to chatting with folks on some channel only to find out you are on different shards and cant ever meet up and do stuff.

Ive been holding off on even wanting to join a guild simply because I don't want some random arbitrary choice I made months ago be a factor on what guild I end up in. I'm too firmly set in my own shard to restart elsewhere. And just jumping in a guild, in my current shard, would feel too much like settling. Rather then having a chance to explore all my options.

my friend (we'll call them friend A) created their main character on beholder shard
My Other friend (friend B) created their main character on mindflayer shard

I enjoy playing with both friend A and friend B so to play with them i had to create a character on both shards
so now i have 2 level 60 characters on separate shards that are unable to transfer mail/ share a guild/ transfer AD

i would like the shards to merge so i can play with both friends at the same time AND be able to use all my available resources for both characters.

Just a note, the quoted comment up there is referencing that merging servers would be silly.

Everyone agrees that merging shards is desirable.

Most people dont realize there's a difference, servers is just another name for shards. Nobody in this thread was thinking about reducing the amount of hardware used to run the game :)

Here is what they have to say :

Why will Neverwinter have multiple shards when Cryptic's other games run on a single shard?
We believe that having all players in a single game world provides for the best user experience because it allows players to play, interact and trade with others without having to worry about which shard they are on. Launching a new online game is an exciting time, where new hardware and new software meet a large user population for the first time. Hence, we have decided to launch Neverwinter with three shards, to reduce the risk of players having a negative experience due to servers overloading. Our goal is to continue to optimize our software and hardware so that we can merge the three shards into a single seamless game world soon after launch, and we have built our multi-shard technology with this in mind. For example, we are requiring guild names to be unique across all shards, so that when we do merge the shards nobody will have to change their guild name due to a naming conflict.

So you plan on merging the shards into one game world soon after launch. Do you know exactly when?
We don’t have a target date set right now; we want to allow our infrastructure and operations team an open schedule to support launch. We’ll definitely announce and give the community significant warning.
