My Main: On Hold till Tomes

I know there have been threads about this before. My goal with this thread is simply to raise the issue again: maybe if it keeps getting raised, eventually there will be action, or at least a response.

I love this game, but not releasing the tomes, IMHO, when the tech is clearly available, seems primarily a tool for getting people to buy zen companions. I'm happy to pay zen or AD or gold or whatever for the tomes, but I want to play through with the companion of my choice, that fits my toon (in my mind, they're buddies). Until the tomes come out, I'll play Foundries with my alt TR or instances with my alt DC. My main will work leadership, and wait.

My message (and my goal in starting this thread) to the developers is simple: this strategy isn't making me buy blue and purple toons, it's just making me wait and frustrating me.

Really? I didn't find it anywhere - do you have the source? I'd be happy if this thread was made moot!

I forgot what thread it was, but the panda guy said they are working on bringing it soon, but no specific time frame other than just soon.

it is obviously being left out to get the initial whales to buy 30$ companions.

honestly, there is no graphical design or creation of all new abilities.

its simply scaling the numbers up to the higher ranks. a single tech could probably have it done in an afternoon.

I'll take soon - I thought there'd been nothing said at all. "Soon" at least means that it's on the radar. I don't care if they/I wait a few weeks, a month, whatever, as long as I know it's coming and not going to hang there indefinitely.

I don't feel that the "delay" is so that players buy Zen companion. Case in point, there is no actual cleric companion in the Zen store (the Acolyte isn't really a healer), which is the one that people would buy, so that theory doesn't have firm ground to stand on. So no, this is not "obvious" and it's unlikely to be the reason. We would see a healer Zen companion if this even had the potential to be true.

The best end game companions are the Stone of Allure and the Cat, both of which don't need to be upgraded from 25 to 30 for them to be excellent.

Just so you know, they've been saying soon since the closed beta weekends.

Now that i think about it, it should take them less than an hour to implement.

they already have the scaling and stats in place on the other rank 30 companions.

you guys know about copy/paste right?

    =P

Low rank companions currently have two abilities. Higher rank companions have 3. In order for the tome'd up companions to be viable, they're going to need to earn a third skill at some point.

    that is an assumption.

i would personally assume that they will not get a third ability.

there has to be a reason for people to spend their real money on those 30$ companions.

edit - even if they do get a new ability, its going to be a cleric ability, still zero graphical design.

Epic only have 3 abilities and they don't get that 3rd one until lvl 30. The big patch is going to be scaling up the damage they do when companions are drastically lower level than the zone/mobs/level. They're tossing everyone a bone here with white companions. How much of a boost remains to be seen. Aside from getting people to buy the zen companions(I agree that is one reason), they also probably want to wait until they can give every non epic companion a lvl 30 ability so that there isn't an uproar when they do release the books. There's also the scaling, I believe a lvl 10 epic will have more base stats than a lvl 10 white companion but I could be blowing hot air there as I don't know for sure other than looking at the starting stats on them. That would be as if they'd have to have 4 different companions for each companion.

In the end I'd say easy concept, but depending on how they coded companions, it might not have been as easy as they thought.

I'd like to see the Training Tomes released/implemented/unlocked too. Its gotten to the point now where my lvl 38 GWF spends more time trying to keep the lvl 15 Cleric Companion alive than the other way around. By 45 it'll be near impossible I'm sure. And 60? No point in even trying.

I do wonder why "Coming Soon" is taking so long though. If was meant to be a tease to purchase Zen, then the Tomes would only be available in the Zen store. The way it is now I'm thinking AD, and probably a boatload at that, but should be far less than the buying a leveled companion off the AH.

Hm. I don't know for sure that it's a tease - does anyone else have a link to the "coming soon" comment? Heck, I'd be fine with it if they did put in an epic zen healer. I just don't like wasting my exp. on a companion that won't level, and don't want another companion.

Hey imivo, thanks for all your work in the class forums, especially your wiz guide, excellent stuff.

How do you upgrade Cat? I've been looking but I haven't seen a tome to rank it from 25-30.

    Soon.

Sadly in the world of mmo's that means between now and the end of time unless it gets canceled. Having devs or mods say "soon" has lost all meaning because of past experiences. Without an ETA we know nothing and even then it's not clear. The only sort of ETA that has any meaning is when they say which patch the tomes will be in.

Sorry to be a downer, but seen so many "soon" comments over the years that ended up either take ages or get canceled all together.

You want people to scour the forums for you because you are to lay to do so? He posted it in some thread a few days ago. If it means that much to you, take 5 mins and find it.

The sale of zen companions is over. Have you see any Never Remember Guards or Tomb Spiders running around the enclave? I've seen a whole 1 Guard...still have yet to see the spider. Ion stones, panther, wolf, cat, wererat and pheora...all over the place. Green Cleric sell on the AH so fast you can sell them for 1 mill right now. (And it comes from a random box)

agreed.. been waiting for a long time for this relatively simple feature.

also the ability to unbind them so I can float one over to my alt.
