hey guys, i would like to understand what you mean by role-playing. don't get me wrong. i have role-played for years during my childhood. but that was always with my brother. we weren't gonna do that stuff next to friends to get picked at
I'm an old school DnD fan. i loved DnD and its universe since i can remember. but sadly i haven't had experience with DnD for decades. before playing neverwinter online i thought THAC0 was still used. its been over 20 years since i had that experience and FUN! even though i played BG and other RPG games through the years they were all solo and all in my imagination. i know I've overgrown my previous role-play style. yet i really wonder how is it now? i never role-played online. (there was no online back then)
give me some insight. please people, don't ignore this post. let me try to understand what/how it is. who knows maybe an all-time-Raistlin-fan will join your ranks
PS: this isn't my main account. just one i opened for testing a few weeks ago.
Out of character: Role play, in my opinion, is literally "developing a character." Much as one would in one's own life by going to school or work or prison even, they seek out new experiences to help better define who they are and what they want to become. The same is true of an RP character, you assume this second persona and attempt to make decisions, speak and act like the character you envision before you in order to give the character meaning and story. In a sense it is like writing a novel with your actions and interactions... very hard to pull off in a free to play open world environment.

So, I've been wanting to try out roleplaying. I'm a bit alarmed with the superiority complex some roleplayers seem to have though... like people who don't roleplay in MMOs are somehow less, kids, or only play COD. (Is playing COD an insult or something?) Last night I saw some people talking in the roleplay channel about how much they hated people who use chatspeak, like they were inferior too.
Turns me off a bit, honestly. Is this how the roleplay community really is or are these just a few comments making it look that way? =\
There are some people like that, but don't worry, most of us don't bite and like to hang with "scrubbies"
Characters: - Titania Silverblade, the Iron Rose of Myth Drannor (Lvl 60 GWF, Destroyer) - Gwyneth, the Cowardly Cat Burglar Drowling (Lvl 60 TR, Saboteur) - Lady Rowanne Firehair, Heartwarder of Sune (Lvl 33 DC) - Satella, Sensate (LvL 44 CW, Renegade, Non-Active)

Don't be put off by that.
Roleplaying means different things to different people. If you put three roleplayers in a room together and ask for a definition of roleplaying you'll get at least seven different answers.
The basics are quite simple tho, be the character, not the player. The character thinks 'COD' is probably a type of fish. The character knows nothing about computers, let alone the internet. The character isn't playing a game, the character is living their life in the world of Faerun.
So in a roleplay channel, folks adopt various conventions if they have to talk about something 'out of character' . Either wrapping () around it or prefixing it with ooc:
Same in local chat too, when roleplaying. Don't bother even trying in zone chat, especially in PE.
Most roleplayers take their time to type their sentences out in full (unless they're adopting an accent), use of common 'webspeak' terminology, saying 'u' instead of 'you', abbreviating and so on is avoided.
Example:-
"TR LFG Epic Tower", commonly seen in zone chat (and frowned on).
Roleplayed, something like:-
"I hear there's an evil lich hiding in a tower, if anyone is hiring I am quite skilled at detecting traps!".
The difference is clear, the fact that you've taken the time to type a complete, grammatically correct sentence , without using 'chatspeak', speaks volumes. It's an indication that you likely aren't looking to rush/zerg your way through.
There are other commonly accepted 'standards'. For example, your character only knows what they know. They can't, for example, tell another characters name by looking at something 'glowing in the air above their head'. If the other character is in 'social' gear where armor and weapons aren't shown, your character would not immediately know that the other character is a level 47 rogue.
Use the 'inspect' feature to see what someone has written on their profile. Some like to write their entire life-story there, that doesn't mean you know it just by reading it. Look for clues that might help open a conversation, or keep a conversation going.
When using emotes, don't assume the other characters actions. You can swing a punch at them, but it only connects if they allow it to.
Roleplaying is more art than science, much like improv theater (and often more like improv comedy!). It takes concentration and attention to others to get the full enjoyment out of it. If you can, watch a few youtube videos of the show 'What's my line', they get put into improv comedy and have to play and react to each others total improvisation. Roleplaying can be a lot like that.
Are we roleplayers 'superior'? Depends on your point of view. Most of us have decent typing skills, knowledge of the milieu, lore knowledge and so on. Doesn't necessarily mean we are better in combat in the game since that's just a side focus to the character. I've met folks in game with really good RP skills whose characters were only leveled enough to get to Protectors Enclave. Others turn to roleplaying after leveling, or do it in between events wile waiting for a skirmish to roll around, or simply to take a break from adventuring. Are 'some' going to be superior? Absolutely. Just like many PvP folks feel superior. Different skills, different mindsets, but always that desire to 'win'. It's easy to figure out who won a PvP match, the game tells you. It's far more difficult to 'win' at roleplaying because the only measurement is that which you set for yourself. Personally, I 'win' everytime I have a roleplayed encounter because I manage to be my character, and because those I interact with are interacting with my character as their character (and it doesn't have to be a 'pleasant' encounter).
One recent 30 minute RP session was with my main (female elf rogue) interacting with someone playing a grumpy old dwarf who had the typical dwarven attitude towards elves. Both players 'won' because we stayed in character and worked hard to keep it that way. Frustrating tho it was for me, the player, at times, because as an elf my character wanted to be 'liked', frustrating (perhaps) for the other player because some elf was trying to convince him otherwise. Didn't help when my elf challenged him to a drinking contest either. At the end, that dwarf simply walked away still being grumpy.
No, I didn't make any reference to Snow White.
No, the game doesn't support drinking contests (but I knew I could win, by adapting an old bar bet into emotes. I am a trickster rogue after all!).
There are some people like that, but don't worry, most of us don't bite and like to hang with "scrubbies"
I figured that was the case. There's always elitists in every crowd, I suppose, no exceptions. I don't know if people realize it turns off potential newcomers, but then again maybe it's a response to the non-roleplayers who grief.
I personally love PvP, and my boyfriend loves CoD, and we're both interested in joining a roleplay guild on Mindflayer. I'm going to create a post and see if any guild wants to adopt two noobs on http://www.neverwinter-rp.com/forum soon.
And gosh elawyn, thank you for such a long, detailed post. o.o I'll show it to my boyfriend too.
(I feel like I hijacked this thread with my question now. Sorry, it wasn't my intention! It was just that my question referred to some earlier posts.)
When the cold of winter comes starless night will cover day,
In the veiling of the sun we will walk in bitter rain.
But in dreams I can hear your name,
And in dreams we will meet again.
A lot of the rp communities have choosen mindflyer to play on. I know for sure Neverwinter RP and Shadow have anyways. You might have more luck finding rp on that shard.
I can confirm that there are quite a few RP players on mindflayer. Out of curiosity I visited the Moonstone mask and there were quite a few.
Personally I chose the server because I loved navigating the planescape in PnP and playing as psionic characters
Ahoy! I need some volunteers to help me find out if RP can work in Neverwinter or not. Read on, if you're game. (Pun intended.)
I spent many years on RP NWN servers (Dasaria, Daggerford, HAZE, Penitence, Layonara), some more hardcore than others, but all fun and full of great stories. To me, that's what RP is: A story. Sometimes the story is told by a GM, other times it's a pre-canned quest, but always the story varies based upon the participants. The stories I like most are yours, the flavors added to the generic soup. Care to share some?
I've just made a Foundry campaign called "The Dragon's Whisper." I'll be using this as the platform for in-character role playing of in-character stories. Have you had a memorable run through the graveyard, where the cleric in the party failed to prevent the dwarven tank from picking his teeth with a skeleton bone? Or perhaps the time the shiny knight atop is ivory horse left the bridge crossing the chasm and failed to grow wings in time to prevent a sudden flattening.
These are the stories that I'll build into the quest. Perhaps there will be a dedicated thread on the forums. Maybe an in-game mail with the latest updates. Let's explore RPing in Neverwinter together and enjoy one another's stories.
Find my character, Bumblebee, on the Beholder shard, or drop me a note. bumblebee@pennpopper
Openly Rping my Drow Cleric every so often while I level is how I spend my freetime (When not Rping my Main). It is pretty **** fun. I will even respond to the trolls and make them stare and wonder if it is me or my character talking.
I have also walked in to the Alteration building and found RP there several times! But as others said, with trolling pretty high right now due to all the kids from other games checking it out, many like to find a place to sit and hide. Though, I promise you...If you see a character RP walking and not saying a thing, you could toss them a tell and probably find out if they are roleplaying. Did so in Vellosk. Was Rping with a buddy of mine in party so we wouldn't annoy the others in the area and got a few whispers.
edit: Only thing I ask from other roleplayers is not to be a wallflower! I love Walk up RP and most of my characters do their own thing. If you see me in game, don't be afraid to come say hi! I won't notice you if you just keep hanging off in a corner!
Multiple Personas, only 'One' me
"Why should one devolve themselves to try and entertain those of a lesser mindset around them?"
Regarding the mindset and the how-to's of RPing what I do depends on the game. If the game is open-ended meaning that there isn't any set history or lore I'll RP in the confines of what my character can and can not do. If it's a game based in lore, history, etc. like Faerun, Star Wars, Middle-earth, Conan, etc. I'll read, skim, and pick up on the background of cultures, races, etc. to learn and know what exactly my character can and can not do/know. So, my character won't be a Sith halfling who is the cousin of Conan from Bree.
The only thing the drives me up the wall is what I call ESP RPing - when everyone knows exactly what the thoughts are of another: "Looking at that the blood on the dagger I wonder if that was the best action." What I like to do is: "I focus on the blood on the dagger transfixed."
i have noticed a lot of rollplaying on dragon in the mask there is a dedicated rp guild of sorts i think called Everfun. they all sit in the mask and are constantly in character (most of the time) freiend of mine told me that they came over from everquest hence the name!

Walking would be a start lol everyone running with no choice of walking gives little or no chance of rp since by the time you type something they've ran or rode across the map. Thing is there -is- an option to walk in the commands but it's just not -in- the Keybinds list. /walk 1 is basic walking. /walk 0 is the mainstay of running or you can set it to toggle by typing in any channel. /bind** ++walk. Also in case you want to revert it back or change the key you use to toggle walk/run just type /unbind_all(if there is a more intricate and accurate way to unbind one key instead of all at once can someone post it?) and that will set it back to default.
**is any key you want it to be. I used 7 since it was reachable at a full run. For example to use the 7 key you would type /bind7 ++walk.
I haven't really seen quality RP much since Ultima Online. I'm beginning to think that mindlessness of button clicking weeded out the people who actually have in-depth roleplay, because I haven't really seen it since then.
Are there any groups out there who actually RP? You'd think Dungeons and Dragons would be the game to find it, but I find it's really turning into a COD crowd of rogues and CMs.
It is located wherever players choose to RP. If you aren't seeing enough of the RP you want to see, feel free to lead by example and demonstrate it to others. Doing so may help you meet RPers in itself.
A place that may help you find RP that matches your taste is the guild section of the forum, where RP guilds sometimes post looking for new players, or players that enjoy RP sometimes post looking for RP guilds.
Mindflayer is often said to be the unofficial RP server, but since all servers will eventually be merged that distinction won't really matter much in the long run. Still, it couldn't hurt to look there if you aren't on it already.
So, I've been wanting to try out roleplaying. I'm a bit alarmed with the superiority complex some roleplayers seem to have though... like people who don't roleplay in MMOs are somehow less, kids, or only play COD. You will find intolerance in some in just about any online community for other online communities with different tastes. Just as some RPers disparage non-RPers, non-RPers disparage RPers. You will also at times see 'hardcore' RPers with negative views of 'casual' RPers, and vice versa. The same often occurs between those focused on PvE versus PvP, and vice versa. The assumed anonymity of online interactions just intensifies this over the norm.
Keep in mind, though, that such comments are not indicative of the communities themselves, but of certain individuals within those communities, and is more a reflection of the persons making them than anything else. Also, remember that intolerant people, and those laden with a superiority complex, are generally by nature much louder than others and quite enjoy voicing their opinions vigourously and frequently, whereas those more open usually have a softer voice employed more diplomatically and selectively.
Hi !
I think it's my first post on forum, just two weeks playing.
I openly RP when i meet players, when i need help to find my way or for anything. Surprisingly players respond in a RP way too, or when they don't talk they just "emotes".
I'm on Beholder server and i'm trying to discover that new world, in all RP way
When i meet people and they don't rp, i just imagine it in a fantasy way.
I'm not a hardcore rper tho, still got things to learn and it's also a good way to improve my enlgish (french here)

The players i know in this game could care less about RP. My personal friends IRL dont play anymore since CB. They all went back to NWN2 Baulders Gate server so they could play D&D.
Its a shoot um up. Only thing i see is speed runs, exploits, and a bizarre obsession with class balancing making all characters the exact same. Though D&D is all over the box cover, its not a Role Playing game. And while there are pockets of mediocre RP here and there it doesnt seem to last and certainly doesnt lead to any RP/reward, adventure creation type stuff.
Good luck though. A real time DM would open this game up on all levels and give it at least some lasting value.

However nothing in a computer game matches good old table top RP
+1, I have played so incredible adventures with the german pnp dsa. Sadly these adventures are not even close to be able to realize in the foundry. Probably they will never be, because the experience you get can never be incorporated in a computer game.
Now speaking of rp-ing in Neverwinter: For me it is at its current state not rp friendly for several reasons:
1. Too few classes and too few possibilities of customization (I mean primarily the outfit and skills here. The customization of the appearance of a character is ok, however it could be improved). And even if it is possible, it is for me too expansive to change the outfit. I like to play wizards for example, but there are maybe just 2 standard builds for it and everything looks the same, has the same abilities etc.
2. Too fast leveling: The big experience in rp is imo the fact that your char is not perfect, has flaws and aims to go for. Here it takes maybe 3 days and 'plop' you are an epic hero of neverwinter. I especially have Baldur's Gate 1 in my mind where you finish the game at level 7 or so, and still have alot fun going through the content.
3. The problem that ppl who dont understand what pnp is are also playing with you. For example ppl with hopelessly messed up / idiotic char names or strange behaviour like jumping all the time or running through instances. So either there is a seperation between this group and the true Rp-er OR everyone is forced to use proper names (that could be realized by a 'report' option if too many ppl report someone in a given period of time he will be forced to rename his char - i really wish this would be realized in some future update). The jumping and running can be adressed by the stamina mechanism: You loose alot stamina when jumping and a bit stamina when running.
If these 3 points are adressed, I can see a future in RPing in Neverwinter.
Maybe someone else has additional points in his mind. I am sure I will have more Ideas after I finished this post
Suggestions to improve NW:
- Dualspec
- Better rewarding foundry and foundry pvp maps
- Custom PvP leagues with leaderboards instead of the current 'matchmaking'.
- Armory
- make jumping cost stamina (to reduce hopping in pvp)

- Dualspec
- Better rewarding foundry and foundry pvp maps
- Custom PvP leagues with leaderboards instead of the current 'matchmaking'.
- Armory
- make jumping cost stamina (to reduce hopping in pvp)
