If a roll window pops up in the middle of my dungeon run, how exactly am I supposed to know if its an upgrade or not? It has to be identified first.
What I end up doing is watching what others roll first. If someone else rolls need (and its something I can use, not red) then I also roll need.
What's the general etiquette?

That's the general etiquette... when people follow it...
In general... Need if you can potentially use it, its for your class, or is a classless item. Greed otherwise... though there will sometimes be those that Need everything... -_- (And I'll Pass if it's something I can use but I already have it.)
Thanks. Last night for instance, a Blue item dropped I could use. Everyone rolled NEED, including the Wizard, luckily I got it.
Then every other blue hat dropped that I could use I greeded, as there were other clerics in the group.

Yeah you are, basically. That's what I do. Greed on greens, need if I can use it and others are needing. Also need if everyone's needing on everything, which happens occasionally but not often.
Need should ONLY be on items you can use. That's it, period. That is the correct etiquette and anything else is a ****** move.
If its just boss drops, I can live with that. My concern was lets say 8 green belts drop in the middle of the run, all of which I can "use" but are not identified. I already have a green belt, but I have no way of knowing if ay of the 8 that dropped are upgrades, sidegrades or downgrades... Seems like a HAMSTER move to need roll on all of them to me
Best solution is to avoid players who need everything, maybe bring it to your groups attention if you're with random people and see if they are of the same mind on the matter and kick the shameless ninja.
Or simply find a guild with respectable players you can trust, although having to avoid playing with randoms because of a few rotten apples is unfortunate.
you want the item need/greed, not really matter, it just means you roll to get the item, if you like give up the item choose pas. easy as it goes. you can sell to NPC later for gold or put in AH to get AD. thats it. not get what you want, well, not your lucky day. get most the item, congratz than, thats it

Need on everything, everybody else does.
Actually, no everyone else does not. Yes there is etiquette unfortunately, it is lacking in some.:(
What the should do is have the system not allow classes that could not use an item to roll need. Yes that is a way to force etiquette and yes it will not stop those people who actually do not need it but are of the required class from rolling need. It is however an improvement on the current system.

I see a lot of "should" in replies.
What I have done in every group is look when something drops, look what people roll and what their classes are. If everyone rolls need on everything, so do I. If I see even one person rolling need on everything, so do I. I don't have time to be a bunch of anon peoples' mothers, and I refuse to roll over and be shafted out of principal.
Almost every single group I have been in, everyone rolls need on everything.
It's not what should be but that's not what the OP asked about.
I really hate ppl jumping on loot instantly while swarms of monsters are banging on me. It's so darn annoying that ppl can't agree on rinsing the area of monsters before starting to pick up loot. Picking it up doesn't secure them the loot it just annoys the rest of the group who's busy banging on monsters and forces them to try and take a stand on loot while they should be clearing the area first and then take the loot. If OP is new to this game let me suggest this> kill first then loot away. (as for the original question there's no one true answer as to what you should do. Get a feel for the how the other players in your instance behaves and do like them).

No, it is rude to bid on items that are not your class. How hard is that to understand.

True that. But if you're in a group that doesn't really share that point of view there's really not a lot you can do but kick them. I'd say warn them once or twice then kick them if they don't change their ways (if you're able to ofcourse). There's really no major payoff for equipment you can't use anyway unless it's uber-cool stuff you can auction for AD.

THERE IS NO ETIQUETTE!

But how do you know you already have it if it has to be identified?
I'm not one of those players who memorizes drops in the dungeons. I just play causally.
This only really applies to boss drops.

Sadly the truth.
