At what point do items like the Worn Shears become usable? e.g., they're supposed to be usable for Leatherworking, and yet, I have yet to gain access to a 'recipe' in LW where they even come up as an option.

By getting the better ones from the Profession Lockbox, of course.
In all seriousness, there's a pair of Zen only boxes that have new profession people as well as items and crafting bonuses in them.
So, in order to upgrade the basic shears to iron shears I have to buy one of the profession boxes? But I could have 4 iron shears and upgrade to steel shears within the game? Where's the irony in that? I have have not been able to locate iron shears in the game so far and forcing me to purchase a profession kit from the Zen shop is BS in my opinion.
I have no problem spending money on items that I would like to have and I have no problem spending game time to upgrade my leatherworking skills, but I don't want to be forced to spend real money for minor upgrades that should be in game.

Usually it will be for Rare Blue+ items IIRC.

so what exactly are worn shears for? Can you somehow turn them into iron shears?
dis company -> I don't give 6 months for this game to die out, they'll maintain a minor community of brainless money spenders since the game will never get a chance to even form a base community on it... Champions Online died out once these geniuses bought Cryptic and brought their smart marketing changes into that game, only thing that kept it alive was the base of community that had fans who painfully spent money for a while, last time I've logged in there, I've actually paid for 1 month to access cuz my main was locked by their system, of course, no one that I knew from the old days was online for less than 1 year, imagine that... Game got reduced to 1 server, probably a merge happened, my guild was all off for more than a year, basically a ghost "town".
Now let's put up with facts: this game has bad graphics for the 2013 standard, it doesn't stay true to D&D, nor it is an "real" MMO, it isn't paid to play, but you can't "win" without paying, most of the animations involving physics are completely glitched, no mention of patching it anytime soon, content is incomplete at the point that every 2 steps I take in the game I have that overwhelming feeling that something is missing, only to realize later that "it will be added in the future", from what I've learned from other companies that run MMOs, that means at least 1 to 2 years, which by that point I'll be far away playing something more appealing, the engine is exactly the same as CO (even the background musics are almost identical to Champions Online), StarTrek, and so forth, the only innovation here is the "click aim" system, which doesn't differ much from the classic "Tab 1 2 3 4 5", only adding a bit of immersion, but requiring zero skill from the player in that regard (auto-aim and stuff).
Man, I must say that I really liked the game, but when I get things to balance the worth of spending any penny on this game, well, I see no reason, not only it has way too many ripoffs, it is in Beta stage, doesn't even make sense to charge for anything there other than clutter, and even on that they are lacking, 3 fashion sets?! really? haha
My advice? Squeeze the juice from this game, but don't bother paying for anything, probably you won't stick with it for long enough to be worth your hard earned money, or your dad's/mom's...
so much for so little, the world has too many dumb people, but wth? That's how they make money!

yet anothere thinly veiled pay wall. Just hidden behind enough "BUT BUT BUT, you can farm it yourself, you don't HAVE to pay for it!" fanboy HAMSTER. there are a few profession unlocks that require a speed boost of at least 100%, and Complete a task and earn the Rank 3 item. Both of which CANNOT be completed with gold purchased items in the game. You MUST aquire something that does come ONLY from a zen box. You might not aquire it from the Zen purchased box yourself, but in order for it to exist, someone had to. Someone shelled out money so that this item can start to exist for teh rest of us to use/trade. The idea that AD trades into Zen only exists because there are players trading the Zen, so its again, already been purchased. There are many instances where this works, but in this PWI version they just use this system to hide thinly veiled pay walls, where the alternative is very long grinds, not even just sitting and waiting for a long time. Even if they wanted like 4 white shears + 4 days of waiting to combine them, but nope. 18hours of waiting + items that originate via Zen. Go PWI. Strangle everyone for doing basic tasks that EVERY OTHER FREE TO PLAY GAME OFFERS FOR FREE.

hey bushy, if your gonna complain get your facts straight... 2 grandmasters of any proffession will grant you 100% speed boost. and you dont need to buy anything to get them.
Please post this upgrade path you speak of on how to obtain 2 grand masters of a profession without someone, somewhere paying real money. I'm very curious. Seriously... b/c I'd do it if I could find a way. There is currently no method to upgrade a common worker to a rare worker From what I've seen, the "free" tree works like this:
4 rank 1 = one rank 2 common (5% increase)
4 rank 2 = one rank 3 common (still 5% increase) -- this is where it ends.
The only way to get an uncommon or rare worker is by someone purchasing a pack with real money -- yourself or someone else who sells, trades, or gives it to you. Someone must buy it for it to exist on the market. It probably exists b/c someone bought a pack and had no use for the worker that was randomly chosen to be inside the pack.
now let's look at the uncommon, rare, unique stack green =15%, blue = 25%, purple = 50%
4 green = 1 blue
4 blue = 1 purple
That means it would take a minimum of 16 pack purchases to get a single purple -- and you need at least 2 blues and a purple to get to 100% increase, so.. 24 pack purchases by someone. The odds of getting exactly what you want out of 5 professions are low, so significantly more than that if you aren't trading.

King is right; the progression wall exists for the wokers as well.
For Leatherworking, I can hire the basic Skinner (Tier 1).
Then with 4 Skinners I can hire a Tanner (Tier 2).
Then with 4 Tanners I can hire an Assistant Leatherwoker (Tier 3).
But to hire a Master Leatherworker (Tier 5), I need 4 Leatherworkers (Uncommon), which I cannot train.
I agree that forcing people to pay for progression will kill this game before it gets a chance to build a decent community.

I don't doubt your entire post. However, can't remember at what level, I got a professions box or what its called and from it i got a blue Master Leatherworker. And I didn't spend a dime on it nor did I purchase it from the AH. I think i got the box as a reward for hitting a certain level, but i just can't remember exactly.
But I do see all the points made on this thread and agree you pretty much can't max out any profession without real life cash. The chances for that to happen are soooooo low. I think the percentage for getting this type of box is so small to begin with, not to mention the fact that you need 4 of each to upgrade... its messed up... If you see anyone hitting level 20 on a profession, you can be sure daddy's credit card has been the main resource used for that.
I come from old school, plain subscription based mmos, and this one isn't even a contest... its all too clear you must pay to progress, pretty much in any area of the game.
You could save up Celestial Coins (4 I believe) and buy the same professions pack that way.
4 days of praying once a day -or- you can put down cash in the zen store -or- you can wait and hope for a special drop from a node or enemy.

Shears are a Profession Asset. The Celestial coins Professions Pack (5 coins) contains only resources, and no assets.

The green and higher assets are not REQUIRED for anything other than earning the 100% speed and Tier 3 result which makes them essentially a bonus for paying players, I have no problem with this.
Mostly they are just a way to speed up you professions advancement/earnings, which again are a handy bonus but not REQUIRED in any way.
If you absouletly feel the need for these things then support the game and pay for them, if you dont absolutely need them then just learn to progress slightly slower. Up to you and how badly you want these bonuses.

I would assume you mean the single quest that gives a professions pack as a reward, in the neverdeath graveyard. I think it can be shared with a toon one time too, so it is possible to get this reward 2x per toon. Other than that, i have not found anywhere else to get assets out side of the p2w model.
I agree these types of things will nickle and dime this game to death. Hell, if i could buy a specific item with zen, i would be more likely to do so, but to take a chance to maybe get what i want....? and out of 20 nightmare boxes, i recieved one professional pack. I hope i had very bad luck at this, as i see the professional pack the only thing worth while out of a nightmare box... unless i want to trade in my spider mount for a nightmare.
Still really like the game, however, my enthusiasm is hitting the diminishing returns at this point.

^ This. The tabs are pretty tough to notice at first until you get used to it.

Never saw Pants in beta?
In other words, the only way to get higher-tier results is gambling on getting a purple (or 16 greens) of each tool type?
honestly there's enough people trading away ones they're not intested in leveling you can snag them that way
I've gotten blue Leadership armor out of a Religion node with a kit on my Wizard.

woah.. did not know that happened. Must be what they mean by Skill Check in the tooltip.
