Okay. You heard the man. Anyone else with the name Rachel (and I don't care what country you live in) has to change their name, now, because I'm Rachel.
You could make a decent argument that Superhero names should be unique. But in nearly any other genre or setting the idea doesn't hold water. And I'd contest it in a Superhero MMO, as well.
-Rachel-
Great Weapon Fighter tanks? Who are you kidding? Cleric tanks. They draw -all- the aggro.
I'm sorry, but this game does not allow you to hog up all the good names and never use them just so you can feel special. Personally I think all mmos should use the @handle system. It's a much better way of handling character names.
They'd have to revamp the naming convention and storage methodology to do that, Mythril. And it would be a massive undertaking for nearly no gain whatsoever. And how would it interact with hedge cases? Like someone trying to lock down a name someone else is already using? The other guy isn't paying $40 for it, so would it force him to rename? How do you separate first names from surnames or lock down Surnames so no one can be in your "Family"? What happens if someone else is already using one of those but not the other?
Way too much effort. Way too little reward. Way too much room for other people to get upset by the change. Not worth it.

Oh exactly unfortunately it would require some major overhauls be done on various existing MMO's game engines. Though if done right some of the newer MMO's should have more flexibility with the ability to modify how characters and their details are stored in game. Unfortunately a lot of them use the name field as the primary tracking for the character in the database. ::sigh::
So it's not that it isn't doable but that it requires some work. I think any MMO would benefit from the work of modifying the character structure that way but ... it would take time and effort. And tracking down pretty much every line of code that used the name to check what character was referenced with a different field.
I remember posting about this on the DCUO forums when it first came out. I got run out of the forums by all the people who wanted to be speshul snowflakes, LOL
The naming system in this game is only slightly acceptable due to the low server count. It is completely ridiculous that your character name is all but meaningless in identifying you as a player. There is no way this would work out in any kind of roleplay setting.

If you name your characters after Thorin Oakenshield, just months after the Hobbit movie came out (spiking awareness above the general book background), you're kinda asking for it.

The 745 Drizzt I saw today think this is a great idea.
Really though if you want a unique name you should pick a unique name and not use the name of a famous character from a novel or movie. I very rarely see people with even similar names to the ones I use.

Exactly. I used a fairly common standard first name on my character and I haven't actually seen anyone else with the same first name. And really it wouldn't bother me if I did encounter someone else using the same first name. I'm not that special of a snowflake.

I also love the fact that I don't have to arm wrestle people for a great name AND that when servers combine, they're not going to take my name away like they did to me on SWTOR.
I would like some naming police to step in though... I've seen enough toons running around named Pee or HAMSTER... /sigh
lame naming system, worst ever in an mmo. So much for respect to lore and immersion, even in a D&D setting.
Wait so your saying that having people with the same name isn't accurate to the fantasy genre? That every person would have a different unique name? Doing a google search on my real life name there are at least 6 other people with the same name in the US alone.
Why does it make any sense that character names are unique in a game when they are not in real life.
Whats gives man i want my name to be unique yet people decide to use mine for no reason kinda unfair
Ever think you wouldn't have claimed the name of your choosing first and then you would be something else now?
I love that we can have the same names... sort of realistic like that. I don't kid myself thinking my name will be of legend in a mmo, just ain't happen'n. Is there such a thing? Leroy Jenkins is the only name I can come up with and I don't even know who the real person is. Insert the famous Star Wars statement about grandeur here.

Thinking that some name in a game is unique is like thinking that in real world your name is unique to you. It's not.
And this game, like all Cryptic games uses @globalname for the identifying people. Most idiotic thing is that you can't use a name you want because theres someone else named like that.
Kind of closedminded, for a roleplayer, thinking that he's somewhat unique or entitled to some name because he typed it 1st.
Want to be Thorin, sorry you can't. But you can be Thorin34574.
Usually it's the last name people get identified. Don't pick some generally used common name that 7436 people are using. If you want to play some famous person, like this Drizz dude, who ever he is, you can bet your pointy ears theres 345678 people with same name.
Cryptics system for naming is great. It serves everyone, not just 1 that typed the name 1st.
You dig?

Of course. Because it is so much more immersive to see names like xXxDrizztxXx, Dr155t, YDrizzzztY, in vain efforts to find a unique way to have an over used name.

. . . . . I've seen a player with my real last name.. and that is NOT a common name. I was thrown back but hey! What can I say, it its a good name.
. . . . . I've grown fond of the @handle naming system over the years playing Cryptic games and other games that have @handle systems. It's nice to not worry if someone else is using your desired name and also nice to know that there is a way to differentiate between players of the same name.

Agreed, And I wonder why it hasnt been done by other game studios before

Agreed 1000%. Every MMO NEEDS to steal this technology that Cryptic uses. Period.
Exactly this. Unique names in mmos, has to be one of the lamest things ever.
Yep your right I'm the only person in the world allowed to have the first name Howard.

I call for Legolas.
