I was getting this error earlier today and figured out why:
I'd forgotten where on the system I installed the game (it installed to C:\users\public\games\ rather than a place I'm used to) and so did a search. From there I launched "GameClient.exe". This runs the client without running the patcher and, it turns out, it kinda needs that patcher.
So, anyone else with this error: run the patcher first. For me it was installed in C:\users\public\games\Cryptic Studios\Neverwinter.exe

Same error, launcher is white, then I tried it again; got this error list when it says "Trying to update the launcher. Please be patient.

Found this by googling. I was getting the connection to the account server timed out thing, because the game didn't make a start menu entry at all, and when I went looking for the .exe, I assumed it would be the one in the Neverwinter folder, E:\games\Cryptic Studios\Neverwinter\Live\GameClient.exe
I don't wanna seem pushy, but having a start menu entry is pretty standard...
many ppl in other threads/forums say they have same issue. Similarities to all of those is that they do not have HOTN or Guardian. coincidence maybe?
Your sample was too small. I am a Founder and the game ran fine during the preview, but now I'm having launcher problems.
I solved it yesterday by downloading the launcher file (found a link somewhere, I'm actually looking for it again) and running that instead of a shortcut or the installed launcher. That worked yesterday. It did not work this morning. Same problem. White box, upper right hand corner saying the launcher encountered an error and was trying to connect. Then a large white box saying something to the effect that the launcher got a response when it wasn't expecting one -- it is an oddly worded message but, unless it was badly translated from some other language, that is the gist of it - response when it wasn't looking for one. I have the message written down at home, but I'm at work right now.
I had no problems logging in yesterday aside from the long wait time to get in, but now all of a sudden it's not working. I'm continuing to receive the "connection to login servers has timed out message" And after reading some of these comments (thanks by the way) I'm noticing that I don't have an .exe file either... however if it worked yesterday why isn't it working today??? I've been really trying to hype this game up, but this is a serious case of disappointment for me... I'll be checking back here and there. Please if anyone else has some insight post on here because I can't find any other forums that are even dealing with this issue...
The Server Status is showing up as a red dot for me with a note to check the forums for what is going on with "Shard Maintenance". Not that I see any such forum. So possibly, servers are down until 11am PST... but who really knows?

There are several threads in the Dev Tracker about the maintenance and they did have an announcement posted on the Gateway this morning, but I didn't see any on the main page or in the "News and Announcements" forum. They need to get a process in place for these announcements - not hit and miss, or here and there.

hello, i keep getting the massage that the connection to the server has timeed out every time i try to log into the game, can someone say how to fix this, if conntacted support and well without going into much detail it didnt help, im starting to give up on my favorite game pls someone help me
I'm not sure if this will help anyone though I'm sure it will, but on the launcher after it checks for a patch and says 'ready' hold the mouse pointer over the ready then move it to the right staying in line the pointer will become a hand though there is nothing there click and the game will launch, i was getting this error but as soon as i done this i got in meaning the LAUNCH or PLAY button is invisible on the launcher. hope this helps
I think i've found a solution. I've always had login issues and never really noticed what i've done to get pass the "account login time out" and the "server login time out". So today I tried to take notice of what i've been doing.
Each time it fails I get to the login screen in the game and the "Remember login" is turned on. Every time I uncheck "Remember login" and close the game, Im able to start the game from the launcher with no problems.
Just encountered another solution, if the above doesn't work. I've set my screen options to "Maximized Window" instead of "Full Screen"-mode. This also apparently worked for me.
(Btw its on to different PC's i've encountered the error, so thats is why i got the two solutions, and now i combine them. Better safe than sorry)
Science is not to find the right solution. Science is to find a lot of failing solutions. And if the solution can not fail it is the right solution.
dabreo1: Have you checked, that the folder the launcher downloads to is the Neverwinter-folder? It could be, that it is "looking" in a wrong folder and therefore starts to download the game.

I run the launcher and it just shows up at the bottom toolbar, it looks normal but it doesnt open to a bigger screen or anything. Then i run the game client (doing both as an administrator by the way) and i still get the server connection timeout. What i dont understand is when i first downloaded it two days ago it worked fine.

Any 1 know what to do ?
Got the same issue here and I think I found the problem, not the solution. I tried to log another game since neverwinter didnt work for me and they said I had cmd error 5 issues.
Dont know how since I never had the problem before and the only new thing on my computer is neverwinter and I dont know how to fix it. If anyone know please inform me how, tried it all.
I know this is an old thread, but it is better than starting a new one about an old issue. I have been having this issue a lot lately because I don't have my system on a constant connection anymore. It seems that when ARC is not noticing a connection even though the game login screen is up, the connection times out trying to connect to the authentication server. When I click ARC to reconnect it resolves the connection time out issues.
Personally, I think it is <edited> to have ARC force your path to the authentication serve via a path that is not direct, but that is only how it appears to act. In reality it may be different, but I am not developer or code writer, so this is just guess work.
Best of luck to anyone who is having the same issues. Just make sure ARC is not saying it is disconnected.

Seems they are not set up
If you haven't bypassed the launcher, can you please provide us with more info? We'd like to look into the issue.
Thanks!

Nope. I've got HOTN and also am getting the message.
For developers looking at this thread, this might help, as I've gotten this on trying to work with the launcher:
"The patchclient got a message while it was in a state with no response."

Well, I HAD to bypass the launcher... because there is no dang launch button!! just saying... I know it's a beta launch, but it doesn't launch. lol

edit: found it... it's under General Discussion... which seems like an odd place for server status, but whatever.
