How long open beta lasts

Look at cryptic games in the past and youll see that open beta does not last long at all. Hell even RaiderZ(pwe) had a month and a half open beta before going into launch. Another Cryptic game, Star Trek Onlind only stayed in open beta for a month. Check it out here : http://www.stowiki.org/Star_Trek_Online. the other Cryptic game Champions Online also was in open beta for 1 month, you can check here at : http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/champions-online-open-beta-and-early-start-schedule-revealed/. So given past games with Cryptic and perfect World, open beta is 1 month maybe 2 at the most. This is just logic and fact.

What do you guys think?

Have you ever heard of the expression:

'Never assume anything, It makes an '***' out of 'u' and 'me'.....'

I have found that it is a pretty good adage to stick to.

    Just saying.

NW isn't following in the footsteps of STO and CO. Those games started as subsccription games. Open beta for them was separate from the actual release. The actual release date was when they started charging for play time.

NW is using open beta as it's release, since it's free and will not have a 'start charging to play' date. Therefore, the OB period could last a month or 6-months, or whenever. They could even just claim it's in OB forever.

Sorry but cryptic other games where sold in boxes and had subs so they had a fixed set in stone launch/live date.
NWO is Free 2 Play and its open beta is when it goes live so really OB for NWO is the same as STO and CO live launch. As such it can be in open beta in the year 3,000,000 A.D if the cryptic and PW wish.

What about RaiderZ? PWE most recent game. Open beta lasted a month and a half.

I expect the changes to continue coming even after the so call launch. Perhaps it will slow down a tad. Therefore, I think it will always be in open beta.

That was always my thought as well. Even though a game is considered in a "Launch" state, to me it still feels like open beta because of the updates and changes that will inevitably happen.

I do not understand the concern, even if the open beta last only 1 month, so what ? The point of the beta is not just to play but test the servers. And that is why we start with 3 shard and then combine them and transfer characters.

For the developers it is to test the servers. For the average player it is about playing. That is the reason why were not having character wipes after open beta. But there is no concern for me but, other players are scared that open beta will last for years and years so I am trying to instill hope in them that it wont happen. There is a lot of concern with players saying "What server should I choose?" or "Well if open beta lasts forever, I want to be on the most populated server" and "My friend is on this shard but I want to be on this shard". Multiple shards confuse people and they start shard hopping trying to find the most popular and most populated. Take a look at past games with multiple servers. LOTRO has 2 high population servers and the others are barren. So for some people there is a ton of concern. This thread was made to help put peoples minds at ease. Not to raise you blood pressure and get people going. But in the end you are right, the shards will merge and people will come together as one. So all that concern from other people will fade with the merge and they will sit back after a month or 2 and say "What was I so worried about, were all together now".

The fact is the developers have stated they will combine the shards. The only reason there are multiple shards at launch was to disperse the player base until it settles. We cannot presume the length of open beta, as stated earlier, based on pwe or Cryptic past titles due to, a) this is Cryptic's f2p title; and b) this is their first title since being acquired by PWE. Regardless, its a pointless argument since it will not affect gameplay as the player sees it since there will be no wipes, and the developers plan to combine servers, "relatively soon after the start of open beta".

    Cheers!

They have said release will be in Q2 2013. That means open beta should end in less then 2 months. However it is still important for them that gaming reviews from professional gaming press will be positive good scores.

They do want positive feedback and they still need to fix bugs. Anyway even if they would change plans and have a 6 months long Open Beta we still can keep the characters created during Beta.

Hey MD :D I just wanted to throw out there that they want to want put in at least the two partially finished classes. I'm sure there is a bunch of things they are going to also want in before launch. The other thing is timing, mmo gaming drops off during the summer months of the year so I would assume that it will not be "launching" June-August. Personally I think it will "launch" sometime between September 19-27. Really though its all just speculation anyhow; we will have to see how it plays out.

I could see open beta lasting a couple of months. That would tie in perfectly with the 60 day wait for the drow release, plus it gives them time to have 1 or 2 more classes ready. Think of the hype they could create with launch day coming with the release of drow and the ranger class. Almost enough to make you vomit if you're a melee kinda guy.

the open beta is already the soft Launch for nwo. so it doesn't matter how Long it lasts, it IS the Launch.
