Drow Character Creation

I'd like to write a backstory for my main character when the game is launched, anyone able to suggest some places to learn about Forgotten Realms' drow? (I am currently reading the first 3 books in the Legend of Drizzt series. I assume this will be a decent start, but I'd like to learn more about names and Menzoberranzan in general.)

You can also read the "War of the Spider Queen" novels (Wikipedia-Link) which are even more detailed because they are entirely about the drow.

The Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide has a short description of the Menzoberranzan of today.

Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue is a campaign guide that focuses on the drow. It's a great sourcebook for drow characters that contains all kinds of information on the houses and the way drow society works. Great art in it too. I am using some of the information to make my drow RP character.

Ah, I haven't realised that there is a whole sourcebook for Menzoberranzan. That's even better :). I should get this too.

R.A Salvatore is one of the best sources for Drow information. As mentioned before, the war of the spider queen is an immensely good story and pure Drow! Even goes into more cities and locales than Menzoberranzan and shows many of the behavioural traits of the race aswell as their academies. There are a lot of Drow resource books in DnD, from basic Underdark info all the way to Drow sex life! Depending on how much you want to know of course!

War of the Spider Queen is one of the best novel series out there, especially for getting a feel for the drow. There are plenty of good resources out there you just have to know where to find them.

WOTSQ (war of the Spider Queen - Novel

Homeland - Amazing novel that details a lot as well.

Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue - Source book

Menzoberranzan box set - it is old and from second edition, but it has lots of details about various guilds, all the houses, and the Academies, etc.

Those are the main ones Id start with, I personally feel as though they are the best, then of course you will be able to find plenty more as you continue to search.

Dark elves are not limited to D&D, when it comes to lore.

If you want to create a backstory based in Forgotten Realms, you should also know the layout of Faerun and the parts dark elves play currently in that part of the world. Makes it easier on you to create a realistic reason why they left the Underdark, or were left on someone's doorstep, etc.
