Alts: How many will you have?

I'll be playing in the next beta weekend but I wanted to get opinions on class customization. Are there enough choices when building your character and levelling up that you will want to have more then one character of each class? I have about 30 alts in Champions Online due to the massive amount of choices one has when levelling a freeform character. Conversely I see no reason to ever go beyond one of each character in Diablo 3. Thoughts?

I am the world's worst altaholic. 15 years now of MMOs, I only hit the level cap once. Once.

But my Founder's pack limits me to three characters. It will be interesting to see if I can stick with that and maybe...

...ah who am I kidding? I'll have ten characters before Labor Day. :)

Quite a few. The combat system is fun as hell. Off the top of my head. A MenzoGade Trickster Rogue, a Control Wizard, and a Tiefling Warlock. Then it'll go from there.

There is some room to have slightly different character builds that I noticed in the Beta but I think I will stick to just one of each class. Will probably cycle messing around with alt builds until I find the perfect build for me for that class.

I may have 2 or 3 Id like to make a druid if they come out with it, and if they have dragonborn post-launch it will be leveled and become my new main and prolly delete the old one

Yes, I'll eventually have one character for each paragon path for each class. So, if a class ends up having 4 paragon paths, I'll end up have 4 characters of that class for each paragon. I already have 6 PWE/Cryptic Accounts, two that I play a lot in STO. So, on top of loading my main account with character slots, I'll also be multi-boxing and/or playing my other account(s) too.

Back when I had an awesomely paying job at Nielsen Media Research, I had over 25 UO accounts, each filled with characters on almost every shard. I literally had hundreds of characters. If I were in the dough again, I'd expect no different with NWO. ;)

What I won't be doing is making one of ever race-class combo. I choose my race depending on what I want to roleplay, not how it mechanically affects the class I intend to make. I don't get into the whole "leet" and "gotta make this build to be effective" mind-set in MMORPGs. I play for fun, not to win. Well, having fun is my winning in MMORPGs, so yeah... In that sense, I do play to win. :p

I will have one character of each class as I enjoy variety and it makes you better at your main class to know how to play others. A true expert in both PvE and PvP does not just know his job, but everyone's job, and that knowledge enhances his gameplay.

Right now I have six slots available (2 default + 1 Guardian of Neverwinter + 3 Hero of the North = 6), so I should not have to buy any slots until a seventh class is added, which likely will not be for a fair while. Hopefully the game launches with five (that zany Control Wizard seems to be a bit iffy, but my hopes are high!), but even with just four I will have plenty to do.

I'll probably pass on the Divine Cleric, and Guardian Fighter. Just not in my personality in to play a Healer, and I find the block mechanic clunky.

Really depends on what we will have. As I never played 4e probably will stick with one for begining (of course after trying all classes for some levels). If we get classes I wanted/planned for each role then can have 4.

    Defender: Paladin
    Leader: Bard
    Controller: Druid
    Striker: Sorcerer

Also there are some classes I want to try out like, Shaman, Vampire and Warden.

Hmm it seems I will need many character slots. :D

Currently looking at 2 atm. Dwarf Devoted Cleric (until some form of melee Cleric comes along) and maybe a Elven Control Wizard. Once more classes are revealed I might try a Tiefling Warlock.

My gut is to say one of every class, but if the paragon paths are sufficiently distinct and useful/fun then it may end up one of each paragon path (so three per 'class')... but of course the cost of extra character slots will determine whether THAT happens.

Also, I may find that, for example, I don't like the devoted cleric's healing playstyle, regardless of the paragon path refinements... or, as a historically-roguish person, I may decide I just don't enjoy playing the Guardian Fighter or Great Weapon Fighter.

But I'll at least TRY every single class they offer, hopefully up to the paragon path choices. Which brings up an interesting question... if I get a character up to the point of picking a paragon path and end up not liking the paragon path I chose... is there any way to 'retcon' or 'respec' and CHANGE paragon paths? And how often could one do that? Suppose I try ParagonPath-A and don't like it, and I retcon into ParagonPath-B and don't like that... can I still retcon into ParagonPath-C and if I don't like that, can I retcon back into ParagonPath-A which it turns out is the better of the three for me?

Of course the answer is probably going to be: Sure, you can retcon as many times as you like! That'll be $19.99 please. ;)

If the paragon paths are clearly distinct and easily interpreted/extrapolated into how they will play then I may end up picking just one and not playing the others... or I may at least TRY the others ---- of course, if I try a paragon path with a second character and don't like it (and won't spend money to retcon out of that path) then that character pretty much gets shelved or deleted, which is an unfortunate waste of time getting to that point.

Including characters I have deleted, I have had well over 50 characters in Champions Online. Over 20 still active. My very first CO character, created on the headstart weekend in 2009, reached max level in 2012. I filled all ten character slots in WOW during the first few days of play. It was the same for me in CoH and DDO.

I am buying $50 worth of ZEN today to take advantage of the current ZEN sale and leaving it sitting in my PWE Wallet until NW launches. I will probably spend most of it on character slots. I will probably have multiples of each class with different paragon paths and epic destinies.

Probably one. I tend to have way to many, so I am trying to just focus on a Main, and one alt this time around. Of course we all know how grand plans often end...

I'll have a character of each class that I find fun to play (which may auto-discard tanks). I don't think I'll have extra characters of the same class except for roleplay purposes, despite possible class customization options.

I'll have multiple alts. Since I can't play my main for 60 days (a female drow wizard), I'll likely play either a tiefling or elven rogue and a female dwarf great weapon fighter.

I'd also like to make a warlock. If they ever release Eladrin as a Race and Paladin as a class, I'll make a female eladrin paladin.

Right now I'm considering four. Trickster Rogue, Guardian Fighter and possibly a two weapon ranger and a paladin when they're out.

I might make a Half-Orc Great Weapon Fighter but I kinda want to wait to make a Dragonborn one, and a Half-Orc Barbarian.

I will play a character to max level first, then start an alt whenever my online buddies / guildies are mostly asleep!
There's also work constraints eating up my time .. so probably 1 or 2 alts will be awesome enough! :-)

    My alts would definitely be
    1 Trickster Rogue
1 Guardian Fighter OR Paladin if avail
    1 Sorcerer or Wizard...

These would be good enough for me and probably all the time I can muster :p

I had a 50 Bard RR5 (yes, when they still had to be female in Hibernia) as my last character I leveled up to the highest level. Recently (2 days ago) I played a Guardian in GW2 up to level 80 as my second wohooo. This only takes a few weeks anyway, I am still not finished to discover all the 40-50 zones :D

In EQ2 I was really close, but had to do all the betrayer quests etc. I needed to have an evil Woodelf Defiler!
WoW -> max level 9 I think, not my game
DDO -> got to level 12 on one server, but currently starting over on another
Rift -> not sure, not my game
LotRo -> not sure, not my game

I'll have quite a few, one for each class is usually how i do things. The hard part for me is male/female and race....i can sit there for hours at the character select screen trying to decide lol.
