Neverwinter is based on Forgotten Realms, originally written as a setting for children's stories in the late 60's, it was later adapted to Dungeons and Dragons and released as gaming supplements for that game in 1987.

AOL NeverWinter Nights was based in the city, on the Curse of Azure Bonds engine. I beta tested and played the game from day1 to its ending(Guild Brotherhood of Pathfinders). Forgotten Realms, of course! The land of Faerun, to be more specific. Though it looks like we'll be able to explore more than the titular Neverwinter city. I cannot wait to see if Luskan or even Icewind Dale make it into the game proper.
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting which is set on the world of Faerun, created by Ed Greenwood.

Neverwinter is set in the city of Neverwinter along the region known as the Sword Coast of the Continent of Faerun on the World of Abeir-Toril in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.
