No longbows, shortbows, crossbows, hand crossbows, heavy crossbows, arrows, bolts, poisoned bolts......
None? I'm gonna have a helluva time making my Drow assassin. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked but how could this be left on the table? And will releasing the game without it make them harder to implement further down the line?
If it's a balance thing please remember D&D does not need balance for fun. It's on expressing fantasy based on personality. Simple formula low level, fighter the man, mid level, rogue the man, high, level wizard the man. Clerics always the man. Flavor classes we all love Pally's, Rangers & Bards sometimes the man but not necessarily always but we still love em and play em. There are a plethora of other races and classes played not for their power or stats but because it fits the player. Why do you think psyonics keep showing up. Warlocks, illusionist? Get on it, I'll be expecting classes to grow exponentially after release. :P
Sadly it seems the game will be missing a few "essentials" at launch. *cough* Ranger *cough*

*sniffs* Me want ranger

If they don't have them for players on release they will soon after I'm sure. The enemies have them. And companions you can get carry them. So it can't be far behind for us.
Da kitties don't speak for me, deez kitties speak fur us all!
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
I'll Keep this up till beta goes live. I'll improve it soon.
We will launch with 5 classes. The Guardian Fighter, Great Weapon Fighter, Trickster Rogue, Devoted Cleric and Control Wizard.
The Tab button is assigned to your class specific mechanic. This differs per class, but think Stealth for the Trickster Rogue and Unstoppable for the Great Weapon Fighter.
We will launch with the Control Wizard. Other types of Wizards could be something we explore in the future, but for now we thought it more important to fill all of the combat roles and get a controller in there.
There's lots in the works But, for launch there are only spellcasting ranged classes. That being said, the Trickster Rogue can specialize in several medium ranged attacks that allow him to play back a bit and deal damage at range.
Throwing shurikens and daggers give me hope but no Drow is worth his snuff without a crossbow pistol. Sorry Drizzt.

I fully expect we'll see the Ranger class added within a few months after launch... in fact, I suspect it's probably very nearly close to a release state already. Of course, I also fully expect you'll have to pay (Zen) to unlock it... which is, of course, the point of releasing the game with the bare minimum amount of classes and races.
That's a big way they are going to make money in this game. Class and race unlocks.
Being a Ranger fan myself, it would be great if the class is a Range focus with some melee utility thrown in to mix them up. Sorta like the Ranger class I remember from 2nd Ed.
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep.
To sleep, perchance to dream. Aye, there's the rub, *giggity*

The omission of a ranger from the starting class line up is odd, especially considering we have not one but two melee fighters. It also makes me sad to think of how long I might have to wait for classes like Bards and Paladins to be in game, since classes like the Ranger would presumably be higher on the list of priorities.

You believe things will happen this way, yet you still supported this game by buying a founders pack! Wth dude?
If this is true, the game can count me and a hell of a lot of other players out. This game will go no where if they restrict content like you said above. There is no game on the market currently that does this and is any good. People are being exposed to games like GW2, PoE, Raiderz, Firefall, Tera (recently), and many more that offer all in-game content for free and only restrict aesthetic things for shop purchase. So I tell you now, if Cryptic want a complete disaster of a community who troll and carry on like D3's community, then by all means, they should go in this p2w direction. Honestly, the worst thing for me is to restrict classes to paying customers, that is horrible and very greedy.

There has been no statement from Cryptic in regards to selling classes or races.
I won't say it's impossible, they haven't discussed this with anybody, but I would be more shocked than you if they charged for classes, especially if they chose to charge for every class after launch.
I wouldn't weight this high in my fear priority. Cryptic designed the game so that there would be, and I quote, no limit to the number of class possibilities. I feel, if anything than 100% free, charged for classes would be rare and especially unique. Don't decide to not give it a shot because of that fear

DDO: Incredibly successful F2P game where classes and races are restricted.
LOTRO: Ditto
Champions Online: Very successful F2P game where powersets are restricted.
If anything this means more success.
You know what's rad about Neverwinter? No box cost. You're playing a game for free. If there is a restricted class or race you want, pay the measly $8 or whatever it will be and pretend that's your box cost. And this is assuming they even cost money at all.

Unfortunately not, and no Zen for unlocks. Classes are currently free and I have not received ANY note of this changing since late 2010. If it does though, they will let you know. Thank you for being clear though it's your opinion. Other posters are...not so much.

I have no problem with them monetizing classes/races in a F2P game as a way to generate revenue, especially since Cryptic's zen is typically tradable against in-game currency. It's a more honest practice than the folks who make you spend $60 on a game and then release same-day DLC for an additional charge.
But, as the moderator pointed out, it's just my opinion of what I very much expect to happen. Why? Because it's a very profitable and tested model that several f2p games use (ie EQ2). I don't have any more information on their actual plans than you do.

Haha, thank you for the response on that. I wasn't going to skip the game due to my worry of that event happening, I am really looking forward to the game. I was merely elluding to the fact that if that event were to occur, I would immediately stop playing or skip it if I knew about it prior to release. :P
Here's another "this is my opinion, and contradicts developer statements, so take it with a small Siberian salt mine" comment:
If I were making this game, I'd eventually introduce every Player's Handbook "build" as a free class, and every Player's Handbook race as a free race; and then I'd start introducing PH2 and PH3 races and classes, with 2 out of every 3 of them as paid account unlocks.
I'd do the same with PH paragon paths free, and PH2/3 paragon paths 2:1 paid:free. Possibly adjusting that ratio toward more pay and less free, depending on various factors.
But I don't work for PWE, so this is just my opinion.

I still don't get why we have two fighter classes and no ranger. o_O Ranger is one of my favorite classes...though I hope if they introduce it in the future it's not through the cash shop. That's not really acceptable. I REALLY wish they'd give us more details about the cash shop. I won't play the game if it's the wrong kind.
Swtor's recent switch to f2p is basically the type I find digusting. I won't play something like that. I'll only play if it's a system like GW2 or Tera.

Agree. This is a core class they are leaving out. Sucks for everyone that wants to play one because we'll have to re-roll when it finally gets in game.

EQ2 also has a class and race that you have to purchase if you are not a gold member (pay by the month). Gaming companies are allowed to make money (and need to do so somehow).
Would I love to have Rangers at launch? Yes! But if not, I dont mind having to pay for it later...

Well 100 % certain reason why Ranger is not released that is Cryptics secret and they are pretty cryptic about that reason. That said logically it is much easier to release 2 fighter classes that reminds of each other.
On top of that this game has no bows/crossbows/guns for players to use currently. Releasing ranger without a ranged weapon would feel for me like to release a car without wheels.
Well I really like ranger Class. I sure want both ranged weapons for players and Ranger class released. One more thing. I HATE Guild Wars 2. This game does NOT have the philosophy of Guild Wars 2. If you dream about that you better leave now before your hopes get buried.
First of all this is not so casual as Guild Wars 2. Secondly if analysing only cashshop they don't sell only cosmetic **** like Guild Wars 2. On the other hand it costs to buy Guild Wars 2 the game. Drow race is already PAY to play race. It is currently included in package Hero of the North that costs 199$. You likely can buy Drow class also separately.
We must be thankful for every free class and race that is released. I really hope classes will remain free. I would pay a lot if I could play as a monster Werewolf or a Vampire in this game.
I do not consider ranger essential it's weird hybrid class made out of fighter and druid (or cleric)...
it always had more of an rp value than anything. I just hope they implement all of standard classes and then advanced ones :P

The thing I liked about the ranger was you could do a little of this and a little of that just depending on the needs of the time. The ranger is far more useful than just RP in my opinion.
I've always loved the ranger class as compared to a fighter, because its martial ability in melee and ranged is as good (with only slightly less damage from the weapon spec feats, but with the bane feats this could be more than made up), and it gets a lot of skill points, particularly detection and stealth skills. As this topic is actually about bows, I do hope we get them, along with skills to do more than just draw and release one arrow after another. I also hope that when rangers are implimented there are many viable melee focused builds, since I've never seen a ranger as a primarily archer class, nor even a pet specced class, but rather as fighters with more finesse, who could adapt to any situation (melee or range), with pets for flavour. But that could just be me. For starters, I'll probably play a rangerish rogue.

Player Vampire is an actual character class (not race) in the 4th Edition Book "Heroes Of Shadow".

Both GW and GW2 are great games imho. *shrugs* And obviously GW2 is very different from NW. Anyone with a brain can tell they are not remotely similar. I wasn't comparing the actual game, I was talking about the cash shop only. And GW2's cash shop is great, as is Tera's. That is the way a cash shop should be. Not some nickle and dime you for every little thing garbage game.

Yes, it comes with Hero of the North founders pack

oh and just so you know, drow is FREE to play. A mod here stated so. Only the Menzo renegade is for pay and that seems more for cosmetic/RP purposes. Here is the post:
