It's hard to see roleplaying scenarios and opportunities in a game where the rewards are based on the time it takes to finish the quest.....

Bob no get. What you mean play roles? Bob is Bob of Tempus! Bob help! Bob Tempite! Bob learn word! This help?

Bob, what did I say about leaving the realms...back you go...

In the game, a LOT of role-playing will be done in subscribed chat channels and even group/guild chat channels (due to the single sever architecture.) Also, people using chat servers and/or Skype may RP on it (confirmed since I do it.)

If you look for role playing guilds here and elsewhere you'll find it for Neverwinter.

Hope this also helps. And thank you too Bob...I think.

Me thinks I bashed him up side the head one to many times with ma hammer. Sorry bout that.

I am actually against roleplaying in MMOs unless it is limited to specific non-combat areas by people. This applies even more so in this game with the action combat system. Now don't get me wrong I have no problem with roleplaying in general, I have been LARPing for 20 years, I just get sick and tired of random people trying to roleplay in the middle of a fight. If it is kept to non-combat times that is fine with me.

I tend to agree with Keirkin. I started role playing in '81 and have at least tried pretty much every form of it I could. I've been role playing (or trying to where I can find it) in MMORPGs since early EQ 13 or so years ago. In my experience role play in MMOs can be very good, but it has to be properly handled or else it's little better than an annoyance. There seems to be lots of ways to handle it poorly.
Remembering Hanlon's Razor can save one a lot on aspirines.

Roleplay is started by yourself. I have been in many games and many times I selected a RP server and still most said in public was OOC. Usually when people talk to you, they need something from you. If you respond in character, most of the time they will switch from out of character to in character.

A good example is Darkfall Online. That was a game with open world pvp, full loot and no safezones. Players would kill you if they only expected to find 1 copper piece on you, they even killed you because they could. Still our guild managed to get some roleplaying out of our attackers and allies. Agreed it was practical roleplay, because we used to attack just to have the first strike. Still you do not have to say anything to roleplay as your actions can also speak for themselves. Our nemesis has always been orcs, so yes those were kill on sight even if they were in allied guilds. People learned of that, so if they were in a group with some orcs, they let us kill the orcs and we would leave them alone if they did not aided the orcs.

Do not believe NWO will have open world pvp, so you can talk anyone at anytime. If they do not wish to participate in your rp and you do not need anything from them, move on to the next player. This is kinda black and white as many times you will do dungeons with non-rpers and it is kinda elistm to kick them from your group because they do not wish to rp.

Well we have build up a small community to support roleplayers in various games we hope to bring roleplayers together for Neverwitner aswell. We do see oppertunities for roleplay in Neverwinter, with the foundry you can actually have some very good options. Feel free to visit the below page if you are interested in Neverwinter roleplay :)

I always roleplay in such games, I hate those chats that start with 'lfg 4 bla56 X2' etc. The game engine helps as well, like every time my Charr Guardian has a critical hit, he says something like 'Did you see that, tell me you saw that!' :)

Or if you run in an event with others and the women you follow tries to find Al-mi'raj, your job is to protect her on the search, I couldn't help myself but say 'She is nuts!' and others answered 'Indeed!'

This is not much to ask for but makes for fun if you talk about ingame content than the latest football results...

Those small things do help to get a more immersive feeling.

Well...I've downloaded NWN1...downloaded patches, CEP 2.4, project Q files, and what-not, and have checked out a couple of servers...pretty damned cool. Oh...and also playing through the original campaign. I think I must be a natural at RP because I was able to get in and interact with other RPers really fast--it definitely helps to know to avoid things like "god mode" or meta-gaming. Thanks for all of the advice there. I'm frankly blown away at how playable this over-ten-year-old game still is. I'm definitely going to check out the FR server that was mentioned in an earlier post. If you want a good retro gaming experience give this game a try!

I think I do want to try NWN2 as well...just have to find a good download for it...

Right now the multiplayer world of Baldur's Gate in NWN 2 is living through a similar golden age in which NWN 1 was six or seven years ago. For any D&D enthusiast there are only two really decent MMORPG choices at the moment if you don't count the upcoming Neverwinter. It's either Dungeons & Dragons Online or Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles.
BGTSCC doesn't respect community author content. for instance This has resulted in content from leading modders not being released to the NWN2 community because they refuse to respect the authors. This is in addition to the other issues they caused, that forced some persistent world behavior to get included in a patch to specifically address their actions. The "connect and the pw automatically downloads everything needed", that you say is great (and it is), is the result of how BGTSCC was breaking everyone else's worlds. A community member wrote the auto-downloader, and it got included into an official patch.

You missed a really good discount deal for a package including NWN 1, NWN 2 and all possible expansions for both games. Gamestop was selling the package for $7.49 and GoG for $14.99 a few weeks ago. Now $19.99 at GoG is the cheapest alternative.

You should try NWN 2 on the Baldur's Gate server, especially if you have played and liked the old Baldur's Gate game or the new Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. There was also another pw called Dalelands but BG is usually the most popular world for NWN 2.

Okay...I'm serious! This time I'm going to make a real effort at RP in a MMORPG!

I wonder if anyone could give me links, advice, whatever to help make this an easier effort. I've always wanted to RP in different MMOs...and tried it a couple of times....but have never got down and serious with it.

I'm a table top player (admittedly more for Call of Cthulhu than D&D right now) and would like to bring that experience--of imagination, speaking with funny voices, "getting into character"--to this game. Oh yeah and it would be cool to be able to laugh about the silliness of it too. :o

    Thanks!

PS: sorry, couldn't seem to get a good result when I searched the forums for "rp" or "role-playing"...

Unfortunately RP is dying in online games. Generations of new demographics have polluted RP. Its very hard to find decent RP now days. I found a good guild in LOTRO that RP'd well. Ditto for Vanguard. I gave up trying to find decent RP in Wow or Rift.

Most kids now days don't even understand why someone would play a character that isn't the same sex as them in real life. I get so sick of those threads.

Its just a new internet now days.

^Pretty much the same type of reasons I don't RP anymore. Plus it also tends to consume too much of my time and keep me logged for hours on end often till very late at night (or early in the morning depending on how you look at it >.>), and I've been trying to play more casually and focus more on real life and deal with sleeping issues. I miss it sometimes, though.

I love people who RP .. they have always made easy victims on PvP servers ..

But seriously, GL on your quest, hopefully sometime in the near future some of the RP guilds that may be coming here will make their presence known .. so I can stay away ... god, they annoy me..

Actually people usually completely underestimate RP'ers PvP capabilities. Take Guild Wars 2 as an example, Both RP servers Piken Square (EU) and Tarnished Coast (US) are Tier 2 servers in WvW. Piken Square is now moving up to Tier 1 next week and is thus one of the top 3 European servers of the 27 servers there are.

I'm at Piken Square and I remember at the start of the season we fought against Whiteside Ridge which was the unofficial Reddit server. The guys of Whiteside Ridge where laughing at us saying we didn't stand a chance as roleplayers. Then the battle started and we literally whiped them off the face of the earth, humiliated them so badly they never recovered.

Funny thing is that the next week same thing happened with Vabbi, another server that though it was funny to make forum posts about how they where going to have fun with easy RP targets from Piken Square. History repeated itself, we steamrolled Vabbi and after that the laughing at our little RP server stopped.

The great thing is when we fight we usually have the outmanned buff so that means we are actually defeating high population servers, one after the other.

So think whatever you want about roleplayer being easy victims but one day you may meet one in combat and you'll learn your lesson, as many have before you.

One thing I'm really hoping for in the future is the ability to let people join foundry instances in a persistent fashion, that way RPers can have their own persistent taverns, keeps or what have you. It would really lend itself to RPing and could even be a thing that cost zen to access, so it would be another revenue source.
