This is a subject that I wish I never needed to bring up. But the world isn't perfect. So this is a feature we all will most likely use from time to time.
I have only one rule to staying off my ignore list. Have a positive affect in some way. It should be pretty hard to make that list. But it surprises me how many people do nothing but spread negativity. And I don't mean apposing view points. I love a good debate. But some people are an all around negative people who do nothing but poison everything and everyone they touch. So I'd like to get a little bit of info about the ignore ability in game and on the forum.
First I'd like a bit more info then I could find on how this feature works on the forum. For instance I do have one user on the list. No I wont give the name out and the person most likely doesn't know. I started to see a pattern of nothing but negativity from this person so I read their last 30 posts and every single one was a negative comment of some sort. So I classified them as toxic and Ignored them. So what does that mean on this forum? Will their posts simply vanish and the post count will reflect that they where never there? Or will I just no longer receive pm's? What does this ignore feature do?
Me ignoring somebody made me wonder if a very important, yet very small feature will be in the game. When the game comes out will I be able to account ignore?
Composing this thread brings me down. So I imagine reading it does the same to you. I only really need an bit of info on the forum and a yes, no, I don't know, or we cant tell you from an official on the games ignore mechanics.
Sorry for this downer of a thread. Hopefully I can get these questions answered quickly and can move on.

When you ignore a user on the forums, whenever you would normally have encountered a post of theirs, if they weren't ignored, you will see this instead of their post:
<their username here>
<user title here>
This message is hidden because <their username here> is on your ignore list.
View Post
Remove user from ignore list
Clicking "View Post" will temporarily reveal the ignored user's post to you, the next line is self explanatory. As for PMs, they will not be able to send you a PM and will get an error that you are not allowing private messages.
As for in game, yes. The Cryptic Engine's chat functions support ignorning of users and can be seen by trying out either Champions Online and/or Star Trek Online and works very well. It had issues early on in STO with limits and people getting ignored when they weren't set to be and such but that's all been ironed out.
Nice info to know, however I only put someone on ignore list if I that person is not a person (i.e. gold farmer) or is too much of a bother on world chat (getting in useless political arguments)
Also, I understand that in cryptic games ignore list is a big issue because too many ignores can mute a person.
EDIT:
Ah! Oops! It was about forum not about game I guess. But same goes for forums for me.
The only time I ignore someone is if they are being offensive, spamming or Trolling. I have had heated debates with several people here and even though we both got upset with each others viewpoints we gained a greater understanding of the others position...it's the only way you grow.
You're just stirring the pot with a detailed thread like this. As for ignoring, I personally only
ignore spammers or gold sellers or if someone were to make personal attack I suppose. I've yet
to read a post where I felt the need to send someone to the gallows.

Options are just that, including a player's decision to ignore others as much as the other end...to friend. I don't recommend ignore as per SD's reply, but it's there if you need it.
And so is the report post in the bottom left corner.
So instead of debating and getting others opinions on the matter that differ from yours, you rather just ignore them? Ignorance is bliss eh?
Toxic? Just like how pro-guns view anti-gun as toxic and vice versa?
If you can't take the heat then don't put yourself in the fire.
There is a good reason why a few topics of discussion including politics(which always degenerates to a certain dictator) are not to be discussed on forums or games.
Unfortunately, some people maximize their trolling so much that they forget to put any points in read or understand. Hence I see a feature like that immensly helpful to sieve out such maximization builds - hence the reason it is in the game.

Ughh that stinks, sorry to hear you had to ignore someone, hope it wasn't me. Nice to see that ignore is an option now however. You ask about ignoring an account in game; good question, Zebular mentions we can ignore, but I'm not sure if he meant account wide ignore, or just character level.
Ughh that stinks, sorry to hear you had to ignore someone, hope it wasn't me. ...
Well, to give an example of what I think was deserving ignore, once I was trying CO to see what NW might be like. And on global chat somebody started politics which although it not a good idea, wasn't so bothersome but then - a certain hater started spamming the global chat. I was using the global chat to ask questions and answer then because I was new to the game. However, with something popping up every second - in capital letters - and not pleasant to read is really bad. It would still have been ok if not so for the derogatory language which kind of puts you off even when not directed at you(and a real damper on mood).
People were looking for GM but there were none. Then someone did type to everyone telling us we can use ignore feature (as I never use it, it was the first time I saw it). I guess many people ignored him and he was shut out from chat.
Now, there are many abuses of ignore and I read about a roleplayer who was put to ignore by RPers because he created superher who was fat - so the feature is not perfect.
However, there exit people out there, for whom this feature was designed for and if you meet one such person, you would actually be thankful to it despite its shortcoming.
Spamming global chat with offensive words is one very effective way to disconnect the whole gaming community - and especially bad for newcomers to game who don't bring friends to the game or start with guild but are alone and trying to understand the game.
EDIT:
e.g.
Think your first day at Neverwinter and you have problem finding options to make chatbox transparent.
There are no GMs on etc.
Now you ask the question but chatbox is like this:-
Trol: blah blah blah *derogatory words* blah blah blah
You: Question please. How do I do this?
Trol: blah blah blah *derogatory words* blah blah blah *capital letters*
You think anybody will read your question sandwiched between two such posts if they have not used ignore feature?
I hope I never get on an ignore list, I mean I have had some cynical remarks, but I try to stay hopeful and upbeat here on the forums.
You have to be extremely bad for me to ignore you. I have been playing DDO since beta and have 3 players on ignore list. Though granted I do un-ignore(whats the right word for this?) people if they have been ignored so long I forgot why. A toxic person does nothing but harm everyone and everything around them. Their presence makes everything less enjoyable. You can disagree with every single opinion I have and still not be toxic.

The only way to get on my ignore list is to type in all caps.
You'd be surprised how fast the list drows.
Or maybe you wouldn't.

While I dislike ignoring people, some times it is needed clash of personality's that wont be resolved or just foul attitudes can be quickly resolved with a simple ignore function. While this is more for in game, I hope there is no limit on the ignore amount and I hope that if any match making systems are in game, that it also takes into account people you have ignored. If you have ignored some one you should not be put into a group with that person for example. It would also be a good idea if ignore in game was an account wide system, so that if you block one character on the "offenders" account, it would block all communication with all of their characters as well, this would help avoid harassment via character switching.
Ignore is usually something I try and keep away from using, but it is an important system to have in place, the current forum one sounds to be fairly good, so I can only imagine that the in game one will be effective as well.
I think ignores should trigger something like an automated DM response for the target. It might tell the ignored person 2 things, firstly to let him/her know they are being ignored by someone, secondly, to try to explain what this means and what actually triggered it. The form might require to check one of several reasons of ignoring. Reason for this being that i believe spammers don't seem to know how they are being offensive. Hurting someone's feelings can be retroactive in many ways ... If it can be achieved to point out what has been the problem, many spammers will actually think differently. This goes for blacklisters as well, interestingly. The problem is just this, you cannot write exclamation letters for every rotten apple you pick (from Ember's sister-in-law's orchard), in the middle of a demon invasion.
