Why an up-tick in so many SPAM posts recently?

I hope to see this thread become obsolete fast, but until then:

I was off the boards for two days, and noticed twenty nine (yes 29,) new threads all with links to sporting events or downloading movies, and without question improper uses of PWE policy (let alone the legality of posting those anywhere and the risk of viruses and Trojans.)

I know the "popularity" of things lately is from increased interest in Neverwinter Online here (and maliciousness of some people,) but why so many posts/bot posts recently, and why does it seem to be "slipping past the safeguards" more than before?

Once we have moderators that can delete posts, I'm, sure this will go away, but I thought it was a talking point currently (at the time of this original post) for now.

But, one request: don't link to any posts that are (or are likely) spam here. Not only will they be deleted and be useless links later in the viewing, but for the time they are not, we don't want anybody using those links which some take you to dangerous outside sites.

I'll be the first to second that. Not only is it of a grayish area of legality, it also cheapens the forums, making it look un-serious, which in turn casta a bad reflection upon the game and it's community.

sigh.... the spams are getting very visible. We need 2 nuker mods to necro the spam threads as soon as they appear.

    We need a:
    -striker mod
    -defender mod
    -controller mod
    -leader mod

At least we are not getting "Buy Neverwinter GOLD!"... yet.

I believe NOBODY should be allowed to post workable links until a certain period of time, say 75-100 posts.

    That will safeguard innocents.

Even a better solution, would be for you to employ a spam filtering organization such as Websense, who have a great forum application called http://www.defensio.com/

You could give the two mods access to check any questionable spam before it hits the live forum.

Leader mod very important in order to remove rage effect from the mods. And ofcourse, any aftereffects of spam on wisdom and intelligence.

I was wondering when the spam bots would arrive, seemed too peaceful around here. It's not a person, so replying or not replying is irrelevant. Hopefully when staff arrives after a nice weekend, they'll ban the account, and delete the posts. I'd love to see the originating IP address/s blocked.

This is going to become more and more common, the more various sites post about the game, and give links to the official site. Only way to fight it is to have actual forum mods, and ban IP's. Or, bump quality posts to bury the garbage. I'd rather see a bunch of posts with "BUMP" than the soon to be incoming Strat Guide and Buy Gold Cheap posts.

Yeah I came here today for the specific reason to addressed this, glad to see our forum faithful is already on it. Suffice to say it needs to end now, it gives our community a forth rate feel and makes it look like the devs just don't give a damn.

"Were to busy making the game" isn't an excuse Stormshade,( I know you have never said that but it is the feeling that many of us get) please give us our volunteer mod and give him or her the power to delete and block spam threads or disable links and put a timer between posts; something, anything to keep these forum disruptions from happening.

It's really in everyone's best interest; I have seen forums like this get blacklisted and no one wants that.

I'm sure the dev's will take the appropriate actions. It is a shame that it is occuring, but such is life on the internet. It definately is an annoyance though!

I hope you all are having a great weekend, Monday will come soon enough.

Take note, these proliferate on the weekends, when the mods are home and relaxing.

We used to have all weekend long Troll-fests at Champions Online, some jerk would post late-Friday night garbage and screw up the forums all weekend long, and our "CM" would clean it up sometime Monday. I'm not surprised she was let go when PWI took over, and our new CM at Champions Online, Trailturtle, is doing a marvelous job, he is easily ten times the CM the last one was.

It's my guess that Stormshade is just up to his ears with other tasks and probably on his day off, these forums aren't a priority on anyone's list at the moment, and I am expecting a Monday cleanup.

Its not good enough. "Monday cleanups" are not up to professional standards.

The problem is these forums haven't BEEN a priority for anyone at Cryptic at ANY moment.

Crypticmapolis has been great recently, but nothing else ever changes. This place still looks like HAMSTER.

We are the lowest priority @ Cryptic... maybe lower than doing the floors or cleaning the bathrooms.

This is not the only/first time this happened. These kind of posts have been released a lot for many days past two weeks - many of them non-weekend. So argument of weekend being the reason is not valid. Though there may be some substance that spammer would take more initiative on friday night increasing the posts - but action of forum watchers is not dependent on weekends. It is just erratic. So there was no need for spammer to double their effort on weekend as any day would have sufficed anyways...

Also CO forums have been treated in much better way (the way merge was handled etc.) which may be due to the fact that cryptic was afraid of backlash from LTS. In NW, no such option being there (NW being fully-f2p, unless they change later) - they have not been compelled to treat the forums with that care.

And if X person is busy - that is just bs reason. A company is not one person. It is about meeting objectives and following policies. Enough said.

(I am reading, thank you all so far for your comments. Since I'm not sure why this increased recently, I'm stepping back and reading the feedback the community has on this so far, plus [if] any feedback from Cryptic/PWE folks.)

    Hey folks,

We're aware of the issue, and are taking steps to prevent it from occurring.

This includes software solutions, as well as adding some volunteer mods to the mix.

Please hang in there, things should get better soon.

It's pretty well known that spammers recently solved a whole pile of anti-spambot measures :D Just helped some other forum admins patch their boards to combat it. The solution is pretty straightforward.

    Spam: Stab! Stab!
    Antispam-bot: Ouch!
    Spam: Stab! Stab!
    Antispam-bot: Tactical retreat!
    *stromshade looks at the spam*
    Spam: RAWR!!!
StromShade: (Points two fingers at his eyes then points towards the spam) I am watching you.

    Meanwhile in the background:-
Antispam-bot: I didn't run, it was tactical retreat!
The Architect: (with a tag of security administrate and a life support black colored mask) No retreat! Victory or death!
Antispam-bot: Heal me! I will fight! Just heal me...
*A gunshot cuts short the conversation*
New antispam-bot: (Gulps)... I will not fail you, master.

I lulz! The most effective measure is to make the spambot think the door is locked, when it is not :D
