Companions won in events now Bound to Character

obsiddiaobsiddia Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 1,025 Arc User
As I've usually done over the years I'd stashed away companions in hopes
that their value might improve over time. Today I looked in my bank
and almost all are now bound to me. Dunno when that happened.
Did they add a timer, or is this a bug?
Did you really think anyone could steal the power of the god of thieves?

Which companions do you refer to?
I checked mine in inventory, bank and mail. They are all "Binds on Equip (character)".
Certain companions from event came as Bind to Character when you obtained them.

And hoping that the common companions will gain any value is rather futile I think.

Only companions with +damage, damage debuff and +crit severity are really sought after, and there is little reason to believe that will change.

Their bound status depended on their source. I assume you got them from Winter Festival. Parcels received through daily box give unbound or account bound items. Parcels you received from other players give character bound stuff. That's why quite a lof people saved their gifts from last year, traded with other players at the festival start to increase their opened parcel count before they started opening daily (with unbound) parcels.

I've opened like 20 of them this past days and was going to try to sell them and now they are bind to character. I had to discard them. I used to make AD from them and now I cannot.

Bugerwinter once again doing ninja changes without letting us know.... once again... I'm getting tired of their (r4p.

    You "opened" them from what?

I have a dedicated "storage" character for the sole purpose of keeping unbound companions. All the unbound companions I got from various toon were shipped to this one character. The companions are stored in his private bank and inventory.

Since this toon is filled up, some weaker companion are spilled to a personal guild bank.

Before this character was created, I also stored the unbound companions I got in the early day (such as from mod 3,4) in mail.

I checked all 3 "storage" last night, none of the companion are changed.

Okay... (trust me these were all sell-able when I got them, or I'd have dumped them for space):
Swashbuckler, Flame Sprite, Int Devourer, Jubilee Parade Horse, Zhent Warlock (2),
Moonshae Druid (2), Alchemist Exp (2). Had 2 Redcap Powries... one is bound now
and the other isn't. Also had an Egg which was still unbound.

Anything I put in Guild is still unbound: Redcap, Scarecrow, Throne of North, Arm. Orc Wolf.

I mean cmon. I collect these things and have played since end of Beta.
Not like I'd let junk fill my bank, much less keep multiples!

EDIT: Side note that most were obtained by the end parties of Simril.
And I am aware of which gifts will be unbound.

    (Sorry reply took awhile)

PS Agreed. Very limited sale value, but I'd still like the game to stay consistent.

those you get from player's gift are bound once they are open.
and the daily starlight rewards and zen market are tradeables.
wish they have full list what bounded and unbounds during winter festival to avoid any confusions, and stop the blame games.

Companions are everything in Neverwinter. I never bank greens thinking they will more valuable in the future. I do have many rare and epics banked to sell at a later date. As Wylonus stated, most event companions are BoP or BoA mainly depending on how you obtain them.

Event Companions are gained by collecting items during an event.
    • Angel of Protection is purchased from the Vault of Piety for 360 ardent coins.
    • Dwarven Battlerager for collecting 3 Tales of Adventure in the task Aid Bruenor Battlehammer.
    • Frost Mimic is found by collecting 18 Star of Fortune during the Winter Festival.
    • Green Slime is obtained with 45 Crystal Dice in Respen's Marvelous Game.
    • Minstrel is collected from Sybella Artis in Protector's Enclave.
    • Neverember Guard Archer during the Siege of Neverwinter is hired with 5 Writ of Commendation.
    • Pig can be a powerful controller found at the Summer Festival for collecting 4,200 Fireblossom Petals.
    • Repentant Dragon Cultist is obtained with the Repentant Cultist Cage Key from Well of Dragons.
    • Traveling Entertainer is found in Protector's Jubilee for 10 Protector's Figurines.
I imagine what you are looking at present is the Green Slime you can buy for 45 dice? That one is BoP while the Green Slime you can win in the chest playing Respen's Marvelous Game is BoE. Same thing with the Traveling Entertainer, buy it with the figurines and you keep it or toss it. Also rarely be found in The Protector's Speech chest during the event. That one is BoE. During the Winter Festival it is also a random drop from a Starlight Parcel or Starlight Bag.

Yes, nice having at least 5 Black Ice Prospectors all bound to character. What am I going to do with them. Plus the cost to upgrade them, are you kidding. At least open them to Bound to Account so if you do get a 1/2 dozen of the same compan. you can give it to a new character on a slot you bought from the zen store. How about a scarecrow anybody, I think I took all those from the farms in the midwest and are bound to one of my toons.

For the Black Ice Prospectors, take out the bonding stone and then trash the companion. For other duplicate, just trash them.

Sure, just junk it. Why do I have to toss out something that I should be able to get some sort of value out of it other than a bonding stone. I would rather pass it onto one of my other toons. Or let me sell it for useless gold  If they have coins that cut the price in half once one toon on an account has finished a campaign (no not the auto-pass coin they sell in the zen). In STO it is called Sponsoring and Up and Coming Officer, it cuts the amount needed to finish a reputation (somewhat like getting the boons and unlocks in a campaign).

I understand why they may not want to do so, but I do like the idea of lowering the number of BtC items and a move to more BtA items.

Make things more stackable not less that is my problem. With some items have 3 possible bindings or 1 or more type of rarity it really comes to dump/convert if you can't find space. I turned one of my extra toons into a mule on my account, leveled him through 27 so I get the tower district bag as well, but he/she don't remember is already full. Character slots seem to a better investment than bags, as you can always add to the character bags while if you buy a small or medium you run out of max # of bags and with btc you once again can't give it to another toon on acct.

It is not seems to be. It has established for a long time that character slot is the best economic storage in this game. You have only one character to be storage. I have one character for each type of items. i.e. one for companion. one for artifact. one for mount. one for transmute. a few for RP. a few for enchantment. ......
The next best investment is Dragonborn pack which comes with a bag for every character you have. My mule characters are all level 4 (and stay as level 4 to make sure no temptation to convert that to a leadership character). They just pick up the bag when they arrive PE and live next to the bank.

At one time I had several black horses stored in the guild bank to be given to guildies as awards when I opened the guild for membership. One day while attempting to rearrange the guild bank (before the sort option) I suddenly discovered I had six black horses in my player inventory and they were all now bound to character.

Subsequent to that I remember getting charger mounts from the Simiril Winter festival and found several characters with those mounts BtC, fortunately that was eventually resolved by Cryptic/Neverwinter.

Currently I have one player with a Redcap Powrie in the companion slot and another stuck in the character inventory, both bound to character (I used to have two characters with multiple BtC Redcaps but wound up just tossing one from a character since I couldn't trade it, auction it, or sell it)... and I don't even want to mention the many Greater Bags of Holding I purchased that were initially unbound, then someone decided they should be bound to character upon pickup (just about the same time the new Ruinic Bags of Holding were released)...

I purchased those Greater Bags of Holding specifically because they were not bound to account or bound to character and could be traded between characters I wanted to play vs idle characters who didn't need them, then to be told that they would henceforth be bound to character - I felt ripped off, the victim of the proverbial "bait and switch" to put it lightly.

I am strongly of the opinion that the character of an awarded or purchased item (unbound, BtA, BtC) should never be modified after it is released...

An item can be discontinued and replaced with something else of similar attributes (for example discontinuing the unbound 24 slot "Greater Bag of Holding" and replacing it with a 24 slot "Blackdagger Greater Bag of Holding" that is BtC on pickup is fine - but to just change the characteristics of an existing item after it has been marketed, that's not OK).
