That is the general perception, yes. And a sad one at that. Tell me, why is it that consoles can't use gateway? I mean... Most people that own a console owns a laptop right? Or at least has access to a computer/mobile phone at some point during their everyday lives?

First and foremost: no cross-platform functionality.

I would say console can use gateway if the console server keeps code to support it. However, it would not be the same gateway. They need getaway_xbox and gateway_ps4 in addition to gateway. Gateway ties with the game and the game event. For example, when the siege event is running, the profession is changed to add siege event task. All 3 platforms are using different mod and different schedule. That means they need to add more programmer, more maintenance, more hardware, more headache. xbox/ps4 did not have gateway bot headache. I don't see why Cryptic would want to open a can of worm with no up side for them.

Well that's just poor planning. They're already doing events at different schedules, why would adjusting el gatewayo be much different to that really? Not like it's a major change (I should think).

Gateway itself is a totally separate web server and need to constant communicate with the game server. There are 3 game servers do 3 different things.
I would say they had a good planning. They planned to get rid of the Gateway (again, my conspiracy theory). People won't leave the game because of losing gateway. People won't join the game because of gateway. It was just a money sink.
If they wanted to keep gateway, the console version would come with the gateway feature. It did not. Hence, its death was planned.

If I remember right, the developer who championed and created the gateway moved on to another company. That fact, combined with excessive botting, is more plausible than some master plan
Well regardless, I don't care about the gear one bit. I did love earning ingame rewards for a minigame that I enjoyed playing of course and I would still like to. It was very unique to MMOs. What if the minigame and the real game had less connection? Ie, anyone could play the minigame without a real neverwinter account because it was quite a fun game in itself. And they could sell stuff to Neverwinter players to get better shizzle themselves in the mobile game? I mean, it's a real moneymaking opportunity right there.
And it certainly benefits neverwinter what with the increased interest and all. And maybe for Neverwinter players they could transfer some limited stuff per week or so?

> Not to mention the server load that the gateway was causing.
Easily fixed...very easily fixed. Set a request limit on data requests. Done.
Anyways don't hold your breath.
This is a very old fix and not a very good one. You just end up banning legitimate users for whatever ban time you set to expire, it has to be an IP ban otherwise how can you tell a request from one user apart from another.
I never said anything about banning people (I've been banned twice due to false positives, no thanks). Just set it that people can only make X requests a minute and after that, it stops taking requests. Similar to the way the in game AH does.
This of course is referring to the fact that they claimed the Gateway was removed ONLY because people were making huge amounts of requests, causing server lag. Bots, automation, etc were never raised as concerns by the dev team (course, the bot companion does seem to indicate otherwise).
If I remember correctly, the date gateway was first taken down, there was a lot of bot farming loyal gear. AH was flooded with that. Probably, it was also the date the video of the gateway game bot came out. It was a kind of emergency shutdown instead of a planned one. However, my memory is not good.

The price of the loyal gear in the AH prior to the removal of the gateway was very stable and also on the pricy side. One would expect to see a rapidly declining price for any item being bot farmed in mass. If there was lag being caused by the gateway it was probably from some of the sites that provided realtime data and analysis on the game economy via auction house searches done through the gateway.
No, it was not in the pricy side at all. It was pretty cheap. The one that was expensive was Loyal Avenger. The other loyal gear were cheap. It was in 12K range. The bot was probably running for a while. Cryptic claimed there was an "emergency shutdown" because of the load. I personally did not believe that back then. I did not think the real cause of the shutdown was either the bot or the load. My conspiracy theory was "it was a planned shutdown" to get rid of gateway because consoles do not have gateway. I still do not really believe it was an "emergency shutdown". The timing was pretty perfect. However, what I believe what the cause was does not matter. Gateway will not be back.
Vs. today's prices they were cheap, but at the time they were good AD. There were a few pieces with bad stats that did not sell for much, but loyal avanger gear usually sold around 70k. Some of the non avenger gear stayed in the 20 to 40k AD range. I would make a point to farm it at least once a week to sell the gear on the AH. I would net 200 to 300k AD a week farming it on 5 to 10 alts once or twice a week.
I was saying just before that labour day weekend, the loyal (non-avenger) gear price was indeed dropped from the usual 20 to 40K to 12K.
