Official Feedback Thread: Quest Journal Improvements

uimavenuimaven Member, Cryptic Developer Posts: 36 Cryptic Developer
Hello, all. This is the feedback thread for the redesign of the Quest Journal.

Following the redesign of the Sword Coast Chronicle page, we felt that the Quest Journal needed some similar love. It’s ready on Preview for your perusal.

New features:
• Option to organize quests by region, and to collapse and expand the region display
• Filters to hide completed and low-level quests
• Filters to show only repeatable or ready to turn in quests
• Quest name search capability for when you can’t quite remember what that fish-related quest was called

What else would be useful? What doesn’t work like you’d expect? A known issue is that the text search works fine the first time, then to search a second time you also have to change another option (e.g. sort or filter). We’re working on that!

I know that threads tend to wander, so I’ll just gently remind you that any comments not related to the above features will be more quickly read and responded to if they are made in the proper thread...

First of all, change to the journal is very very welcome.

Few things I think will be great to see:

    1. A button to collapse all zones and only expand the current zone the player is at.
    2. If possible to add grouping the quests by their target zone and not the origin zone (but not instead of how it is now, because a lot quests are easier to find by their origin / campaign, but when doing them it's nice to see what else in the zone to do)
    3. If possible to group by campaign - I think it was mentioned that the quests don't have that info but just in case..

Oh yeeeeaaahhhh :p I usually accept all quests i see and "collapse by zone/map/region" is the feature i wanted since 2014 <3 Search option should be very helpful too. Haven't tried it on preview yet.

"1. A button to collapse all zones and only expand the current zone the player is at."

Great idea; that shouldn't be too hard.

"2. If possible to add grouping the quests by their target zone and not the origin zone (but not instead of how it is now, because a lot quests are easier to find by their origin / campaign, but when doing them it's nice to see what else in the zone to do)"

So a quest has 1) the zone in which you accepted it 2) the zone(s) in which you make progress and 3) the zone in which you turn it in. We have quests where all three of those are different. :/ Therefore currently the "region" is a new value for each mission, which is going to be whatever makes the most sense for that mission. Because we love our content people, though, we didn't make them enter a new region value by hand for every mission in the game; the default region value is #3 - the zone in which you turn it in.

What we actually want, though, is for "region" to be closer to #2, but that information isn't actually stored as part of the quest. For example we have a quest that starts in your Stronghold, takes you to Dread Ring, and you turn it in at the Stronghold. For that to appear in the "Dread Ring" region, someone has to set the region to "Dread Ring" by hand or it will appear in the "Stronghold" (turn-in) region by default, which doesn't help you when you're in the Dread Ring and wondering what you need to do there.

So the "Region" definition is still a work in progress. I figured, though, that we can use the "Show ready to Turn In Only" filter to make sure we don't miss a chance to turn in a quest, so having a "group by turn-in location" wasn't as high a priority. It's still something we'll look at for the next feature update, though.

(I hope that's what you meant by "target zone" and "origin zone"?)

"3. If possible to group by campaign - I think it was mentioned that the quests don't have that info but just in case.."

That would be awesome! Unhappily it will have to wait since it would involve manually tagging a whole bunch of missions. If we ever get interns, that would be a great project for them. :)

Thanks a lot for the explanation and changes, and yup by target I meant #2, and source as #1. Only because the most likely scenarios for me are "I have this quest from mentol-derith to collect demonic something in a zone I don't remember" - So now it's possible to find, luckily because it's end point #3 is also the same as starting #1.

And "Ok, I'm now in wheel of dragons, lets see what quests I forgot to do here, if I'm already here because I've killed some dragons now (for example)" - Shame this is not possible, though the global map (where we change from zone to zone) does show on each zone in the tooltip the current quests that active in those zones. Maybe the info can be pulled from there, and it will also be updated to the current quest state, if it traverses several zones.

Yes, there does appear to be some mechanic that shows (all? some?) quests whose "next step" is in a particular zone. And those quests are listed out when you hover over a zone on the world map.

Would it be possible to group the quests by this "next step zone" rather than explicitly "origin" or "turn-in" zones?

Also agree with Janne's suggestion that this should be added in addition to the "origin zone" grouping that exists. Both ways of organizing the journal are helpful.

I love the journal changes thank you. They are a bit buggy but I am sure they will get sorted out. What I would REALLY like to see as a cvhange is to add a "DE-Select ALL" button that places an "X" in all quest boxes. That way we can just select what we want and not have to go through doing it one at a time over and over. For some reason the selection changes do not hold from log in to log in. Thank Again, Dia'Shan.

I'd really love it if selections were persistent until I changed them, like the campaign UI is. All the zones I've collapsed default to open again when I relog. If this is too complicated to save by character, can the default be for all sections to be collapsed?

Or/and a button to collapse all and only open the current zone one.

I accepted a quest from Ewan Roald to ambush a giant warband. After searching the whole town of Caer Konig, it seems he played a ruse on me! ;)

Either one of these suggestions would be great.

I am getting annoyed that I need to sift through Storm King's Thunder and other places like Sharanderp to find the Mod12 zones.

Ok, after some use, i can say that the "upgrade" is good. I can also see that other ppl asked for same improvements i was about to suggest, like:
    - remember the view per char OR add button like "collapse/expand all" zones
    - add to zone title (to the right) quest counter, ex.: "Vellosk" (0/4), "0" for quest ready to claim and "4" for total quests available
    - i'd rather prefer all collapsed and auto-expand zone where im in, and put that zone on top. For example, original, by name, sorting, will place "Vellosk" to the end of the list. When i enter that zone, would be great to open journal and see that zone on top of your journal, with other zones collapsed to not disturb.

a few things i think should be done with the auction is its very glitchy.. u should be able to drop your item up for sale and when u go to add it to the auction before u post it.. on the right it should show u what the other ppl are selling theres for and how many are for sale etc.. cause there is many times i got screwed on items that posted for more ad then what it was going for like nature kits etc.. says its way more then what htey go for and they make a posting fee and it never sells cause it lied to u by default.. so it be nice to show it where when u upload the item for pre post it will show all the other same item as u r posting with prices a little more specs would be great on the auction.. also should be a make a offer button as well..

i think as far as vip goes it should be a enchanted key for every character or be able to make enchanted keys or bags cause this is getting costly on the ppl who love your game and it really makes u want to stop playing cause u got to pay to win and thats not fun. think of your customers as your bank.. they make your money.. i know i have a plumbing company and i treat my customers with as much small free bees as i can cause it makes them happy and they stay calling on you.
maybe if u spend like i do.. 1100 zens a month.. to try to get a legendary mount. we should be able to have in every 100 or so keys should have a 100% chance to get some kind of epic mount or something epic.. to make us want to have a reason to buy more keys.. at this rate its like under 1% chance we are gonna get a legendary mount. .i know i spent hundreds for keys in the last few months and not a single mount. not even a box or nothing for it.. so it be nice ..

last but not least.. i think if u buy vip u can pay a little more like a dollar or 2 more to have private pvp one on one with your friends without all the cheaters and pvp gangs that are just hogging the room and killing the HAMSTER out you cause they got top of the line gear and they are gang beating u.. just a thought..

and i think that the items and all the screens that pop in the middle of your screen like inv full and the matches should not pop up in the center and it should be able to move and keep it moved to that location of the screen. many times my bags are full and it makes me get alot of damage to my self when its poping up full full in the center of your screen.

hopefully arc and pwc takes some of this or all of this in to the next patch.. it be great .. just try it for a month.. see if it increases the money flow..

also quest paths should be shared with ppl on your team instead of going blank and only showing dots on corner map instead of screen

other then that the game is fun but its pay to win and thats getting old fast..

im willing to be a beta tester and debuger if u guys need someone to try out new stuff .. i play everyday after work then go to bed. but i put in 4hrs min mon thru fri and 8hrs on most weekend days.

    @uimaven QoL bunch quests scrolling
Keep scroll position when switching between journal tabs.
Remember scroll position when the user closes the journal.

    Thanks

Hi, in last patch NW.85.20170808a.8 was improved quest log sorting. I want to thank you for that but please can you move "Quest state" from "Sort by" to "Filtered by" so we can still sorting quest log by quest levels with finished quests on a top like it was working before this patch. Because was much better to see what quests are finished without need of checking whole quest log. Thank you.
