Question about refining the new Relic Artifact Main-Hand and Off-Hand

I am wondering whether we can refine our new Relic Artifact Main-Hand and Off-Hand by feeding our old Main-Hand and Off-hand into them. I also ask myself if we can refine the new Relic Artifact Main-Hand and Off-Hand with items like Peridots or Resonance Stones. Will we only be able to refine the new Relic Artifact Main-Hand and Off-Hand by using the new special refinement gems like "Shimmering Hill Emmerald", "Lustrous Cloud Ammethyst", "rough Sapphire" and so on, which drop from Treasures or Assault on Svardborg?

By now I received conflicting messages from different players regarding this subject. Can someone please clarify the situation? I would appreciate solid information, backed by evidence.

    I've used ordinary refining stones without a problem. The new gems give much more points though
