I'm on ps4 now. not many companions available. my active is currently the battle rager. we haven't had the update yet. so he is worth holding on to and upgrading? I've been holding off on using my tokens.. but if he's worth it after nerf as well I may do so. been holding off on getting the mercenary pack because I don't really like the stats on it. seems like better could be had but it's still bis?? seriously? by how much..is it seriously better than everything else out there or is it just really good? (trying to figure out if I should go ahead and spring for it or not anyway since I have no idea how long it's gonna be before we get the next update)
As you want something different from your TR I won't suggest Shadow Demon even if I think it is the perfect choice for Combat. I haven't really given much thought to another companion but if I chose something else it has to have 3 offensive slots and a decent (not stats) active bonus. That doesn't leave many options:
Pseudodragon Dancing Blade Air Archon Fire Archon Vicious Dire Wolf Book Imp Pig (heard it is really good for GF so why not Combat HR)
Others with iffy active bonuses:

Battlerager is good but suffers from the same problem as the Con Artist and a couple of other decent Companions... he has a Defence Slot That is 285% of 840 Power missing right there.
I still think the Merc is BiS, that is just me personally. His 1st attack is a teleport behind whatever enemy you just targeted for instant Combat Advantage, plus with AotP you also start off with CA as he is right next to you.
Next his attacks are soooooo fast that he will proc rising Power & Crit rings within a couple of seconds of battle.
He has 2 Ring slots and a Waist slot which is perfect for personalization as well as the new rings. For me his main stats are 4k Power and 2k Crit, 720 Deflect & Life Steel, 450 Regen etc etc... then add the ring procs on top of that. (Only Rank 10 Runes so far so not BiS yet).
Even with Protector's Mount bonus not working on him at all, he is one Companion that sends over an incredible amount of stats. If they ever fix that Mount Bonus he will be even better
Other Companions with the Protectors Mount Bonus send over around the same or slightly less stats than my Merc without that Bonus. It is pick and chose really, most Companions are viable in a way now.

it sells for 400k, upgrading its not worth it. i found how to get it for 600k tho
my 2 cents for what it is worth Im moving more toward a PVP combat build so companion is going to have to give me what I need for PVE. Been running Shadow Demon he does more DPS than any other by far but limited on stats. But due to No ring slots but I have been using Air Archon for a week due to coming change and he is up most of the time with 3 offense and 2 rings and neck is why i chose him. He has 3 rank 12 bonding sudden crit ring and ring of brutalty both +4 3 rank 12 darks in defense and 3 rank 12 azures in offense .
when start fight 1 second latter 105% crit for 8 seconds then crit @ 95% for 10 seconds when hits a different Attack after around 10 seconds 105% crit for 8 seconds strength is 54k for then goes to 42k. The times are same on this ring as well. Lifesteal jumps to 27% never leaves and armor pen gos to 70% and never leaves he has3 attacks that hit quickly and never seems to go into total cool down
Also on sudden rings I have found with Moving out to range for longstriders in that 2 seconds the sudden rings reset instantly and pop again when fire LS
i ll probably write a guide on how to make a combat ranger pvp/pve/utility soon im doing quite good everywhere

By the way, the Shadow Demon suicides against the Turtle in FBI (teleports behind her and falls into water). Do the Mercenary and Blink Dog do the same?
