  Probably would freak more people out if it were named "Player Observation Orb"

  Occasionally, companions don't despawn when their owner logs out. Not sure of the circumstances, but a companion can persist in an instance seemingly indefinitely, as I observed an unattended goat that lasted at the bank pretty much from one maintenance until the next. (I miss you, "Instance 6 Goat".)
  
  Combat companions display their name but leftover augments don't seem to, just like you can see your battle companion's name while running around with them but not your augment's name (if you have an animal augment).

  Maybe you were having a paranoid delusion about a soul puppet and it manifested as a hallucination because you hate stupid people, and in your delusion they were represented as test dummies? mmmmmm......
