For teenie boppers? Not quite lol. I have one, not a teen, my parents each have one, also not teens, and I actually set one up for my aunt and uncles. They all get a kick out of it. So unless someone is just a REALLY old HAMSTER, lol, then it is not a hard thing to grasp.
It may not be hard to grasp but it is an inefficient and shallow means of communication. I use the forums for finding out about the game unless someone tells me to check out Twitter. The forums should always have first priority because it is the official platform
They post everything on Twitter first though. I would even say that they probably, I don't know for sure, had a twitter BEFORE they had the forum itself. Plus its so much easier to tweet 150characters telling people whats up than to make an entire forum post about it. Clearly people don't see the ease of using twitter and the benefits over using it over a forum for quick announcements. But someone will comment and disagree with everything I just said, even though its 100% true. So we will agree to disagree lol.

You are 100% right it is easier to post on twitter then updating the website or updating the in game news.
IMO that is why the messages are sent out through twitter....
Good customer service would be sending the messages out in the forums...maybe an in game message but they do not want to seem to update those with any kind of useful new information. That takes more time and good customer service is not important enough to some companies to spend time doing it.
I do not know what they do with the money I give them but customer service does not seem high on the list.
Man I am a customer of a lot of various games and other industries. This is going to be the first game/industry that is going to force me to use twitter because they do not want to make time to provide high level customer service.

Bottom line...that Maze box was not that important to me. Ya I wanted the free chance at a point when my Pal and GF made it to 70 this week but oh well. Can get that sooner or later anyways. The mount thing...I have the mounts it applies to that I want already anyways.
Continued disappointment in the level of customer service....big or small...will get people looking at other places to spend money
So ya save time if ya want....keep the customer service up to a level you can live with tho because getting people to spend money is not just about trying to force them to spend money. Wanting to spend the money in the first place is a big part of it.
Actually I knew the cut off date well in advance and I don't use twitter at all. Arc sent out an email about the promotion which stated its duration quite clearly.

Note to self: must check why you do not receive it.
As an aside, I like that the in-game calendar currently has a free item event. I would prefer a different method, but at least it's there. ;-)
